So I just found this auction...

In case it's expired by the time you see it, this auction is from a guy selling a MASHED 1990 Bowman Robbie Alomar. BIN price is $1.30 plus $8.05 shipping (economy shipping!). Shipping from where? Greenland? Nope, from San Jose CA. Eight Dollars and Five Cents. This is an all-timer!

Here's the photo and the caption...

"I have a Roberto Alomar baseball card for anyone that needs it to complete whatever collection they have.

I will have to apologize for the current condition that it's in, but you know how to fix it properly than buy right now"

Maybe Gary Moser knows how to "fix it properly", but I sure don't :)
I would fix that by going to sportlots and buying one in good condition for $0.18....thats my fix. That's even better than when someone throws a 1994 base up for a $100 BIN

Year by year, here is how many unique cards were issued for Robbie Alomar. I'm including everything that could possibly be called a unique card, so the counts are higher than most reasonable people would come up with.

What spurred me to post this is the count from 2006. Until yesterday I had never found a single issue from that year, so the total was at zero. But trawling TCDB last night I found one - the 2006 Hero Decks Indians playing card set, which I already had. They are not dated, however several of the cards feature current players from that time, and text on the cards reference the 2005 season, meaning they were printed in 2006.

Here's the card scans from TCDB:

I just can't understand when people post things for sale but can't spend 10 seconds to get an idea of what they actually might be worth..

Speaking of which, this listing is still active - $10,000 for a 1995 Score base card.

are there multiple years of those hero’s decks for alomar? There are 3 years of Cardinals ones that I know of with no way to tell on the card itself. The boxes have different years on them. They’ve recently listed a new 2020 Cardinals set.

By my count, only two years - 1987 and 2006.

But by Beckett's count I have 9 years complete: 1987-1991, 1993-1994, 2006, 2009. And only missing 10 cards between 1992 and 1995-1997.
Hopefully you knock a few of that list. I assume they are all tough to find at this point. 1996 mirror, super raves etc. but what is the missing 1992 stuff?

As far as I know, he was only in that one Indians issue. Didn't realize they're still making those cards though, good to know. Maybe another one will pop up someday.

Ah....the 1992 is the Highland Mint metal card, silver version. I've seen a couple of them but never wanted to cough up the bucks for one.

I just realized that I'm missing a 1993 as well - the 1993 Pinnacle Cooperstown Promos. That set is listed in Beckett, but the Alomar card #29 isn't included. But TCDB lists the set and all 30 cards, and I'm pretty sure they all exist. So I guess I really haven't completed 1993 either :-( I don't suppose you have found the Puckett Cooperstown promo?

PS - I have all the super raves! The ones I'm missing from late 90's are other species of bigfoot cards...

Yeah the Cooperstown promos are tough. Yes I do have one. I've been fortunate enough to own a few over the years. Hopefully you can cross that off the list soon.

Two notes:

- I know I've said this before in this thread or via PM: I am pretty much indifferent on Robbie Alomar, but I love this thread, absolutely one of my favorites on FCB.

- Three years ago I bought my Cooperstown Promo Puckett. It has a crease in it and some surface issues and I don't care at all, glad I had a chance to buy one, I'd recommend you jump at the chance to buy an Alomar even if you can only find one that's a little beat up!

Hey thanks man, I really appreciate the kind words about this little corner of the internet. Happy holidays!

And yeah if I ever see a Cooperstown promo, even if it has tire tracks on it, I will be the winning bidder.

Today is Christmas.

Thought I'd post a few recent scans before turning in. Here's most of the 2002 Leaf Certified Materials run, missing the mirror black /1 and the gold sample. This scanning project has reminded me just how cool some of these cards are, that I don't think of often. The serial number foil on the mirror cards matches the color of the card, which is a nice touch.

I just scanned the 1500th card from my collection this evening. It's the 1994 OPC All Stars Mail-In Redemption card. For $20 Canadian plus 5 of these redemption cards, you could get a set of jumbo gold-foiled All Star cards. There were also jumbo All Star cards without gold foil inserted as box toppers.

Just for fun here's a few more from 1994. First the 1994 Leaf base card:

1994 Leaf #225 Bronze Foil On Back.jpg

Now the 1994 Leaf Promo. Besides the Promotional Sample text and card numbering, there are other differences from the base card. The front photo is shifted left relative to the curved blue border on bottom, and the back photo is shifted left relative to the background photo of Skydome. This seems to be pretty common in 90's promos, where the promo cards are sent out while the graphics people are still tinkering with the layout.

1994 Leaf Promo #1 Cropping Variation On Back.jpg

Now the fun part - another version of the 1994 Leaf Promo. There is a small difference in the placement of the Promotional Sample text on front, but that doesn't really count. That is almost certainly a different layer of printing, so its alignment relative to the photo is probably a normal variation of the printing process. The intentional difference is photo alignment on the back. The player photo is again shifted to the left as compared to the base card, but not quite as far left as the first promo.

1994 Leaf Promo #1.jpg

So the graphics people made small adjustments of the player photo on back at least two times between promo and final version. Call me crazy but I find this little glimpse into card production kinda interesting.

First love the clear scans and love that 1994 OPC Gold card even more !!
Second- that's the 2002 Leaf Certified run -not the 2001 - not sure if that was just a typo on that end :sneaky:
Looking forward to more !!

Thanks! I am happy with my scanner. I didn't buy it for this purpose, I just bought it to be a general purpose printer/scanner. But after 3000 scans (1500 front and 1500 back) it is still hanging in there.

Thanks for the note on the 2002 Leaf Certified, I fixed the typo.

Meant to reply earlier but completely spaced it out. Thanks for mentioning that 1990 hologram card, but believe it or not that is one of the few 1991 UD holo variations I actually have.

Anyone looking for 1991 UD Alomar Variation (1990 Baseballs)? I’ve also got the signed Legends magazine on its way. I’m planning to cut the cards out. I need the Ozzie. Anyone interested in the signed mag without cards I’ll give ya a good deal.

One more for tonight - a recent pickup. The 2002 Mets Team Issue card, aka Marc Levine photo card. There's a 2003 issue as well but I haven't seen one come up for sale yet.

Its been a good night of scanning. I got 26 more cards done, after a few beverages with my neighbor, who is one of the 4 lucky (hah) members of my covid bubble. Which is now in month 11. Jesus. But on the bright side I'm in to the Pacific section of my collection, which is more interesting and fun to scan than most other brands. I miss those guys.

Here's the 1996 Pacific Carlos Baerga Softball Game card. According to baseballcardpedia.com, each person who attended Carlos' annual celebrity softball game, in his hometown of Bayamon PR, got two cards.

Print run on these things can't be that high. Google tells me the Baymon stadium capacity is 12,500. So assuming that stadium was the same size in 1996 as it is now, and was full for the celeb softball game, that means 25,000 cards distributed. With 8 cards in the set that means ~3000 of each player. But was it full? For a celebrity softball game? Probably not. So at half-full, we have ~1500 of each player. That's a wild guess, but still a pretty low run for 1996.

1996 Pacific Baerga Softball #5.jpg

This is the 1993 Pacific base card, with an embossed stamp from the 1999 Toronto Spring Expo. For years Pacific would set up shop at various events, from larger card shows to the Super Bowl, and give people the opportunity to buy some product and have a card of their choice stamped with a special embossed logo. The logo was unique that show, and apparently the embossing die was destroyed after the show. I have about 30 of these in my collection, but given that there were dozens of shows, where cards from many different sets could be embossed, I would guess there are many, many other cards out there. But hey, this is what makes collecting maddening fun.

There's a great FCB thread about the Pacific show stamps here:
