I like it when players personalize the autograph for me.

I feel like it kinda brings the player and the collector closer together.

My belief is that the players like signing they just dont like that its never really over.

Some may... but most don't.

That is simply untrue. Most players love signing. I'm with Will 100% on this one.

Are you saying this from a grapher's point of view, or someone with a little more intimate knowledge?

Both. Maybe at the major league level most guys don't enjoy signing, but incorporating all of baseball, most professional players enjoy signing.

I would agree that the majority of professional baseball players don't mind signing autographs for fans. However, I would also argue that the way autograph seekers go about obtaining autographs differs greatly. Lining up at the ballpark before or after a game for a player to sign is one thing. Chasing them down at stoplights, coming out of hotels, etc are practices that would seem to be overstepping the bounds a bit, in my opinion.

I think you could also break the distinction down further. I think many players enjoy interacting with and signing for true fans, and have no problem signing multiple items for people's personal collections. However, I can see how a player can quickly sour on seeing the same two or three guys putting a stack of cards in front of players night after night. Unfortunately, I think sometimes true fans and casual autograph seekers may be mistaken by players for the latter group.

Beckham didn't say anything.

Today I did Reds:

Day 3- Reds

Daryl Thompson 6-6
Josh Roenicke-6-6
Chris Valaikia 3-3
Dusty Baker 1-1
Todd Frazier 6-6
Jay Bruce 3-4 1 Side Panel Ball
Chris Dickerson 2-2
Jerry Hairston Jr 2-2
Wilken Castillo 1-1
Bill Bray 1-1
Delvin Mesoraco 3-3
Alex Gonzalez 1-1
Wes Bankston 1-1
Edwin Encarnacion 1-1
Jacque Jones 1-1
Paul Janish 1-1
Pedro Viola 4-4
Craig Tatum 2-2
Micah Owings 2-3
Eric Davis 1-1 OMLB SS
Bronson Arroyo 1-1 OMLB SS

Traffic was backed up for Thompson, Frazier, and Roenicke so they signed everything. Only players that signed that I missed was Brandon Phillips. This complex requires alot of patience and just staying in one place. Surprised by the time that Bruce took to sig considering he rolls with Votto. Discussed Arizona vs Florida with Wilken Castillo. He likes the light life better in Arizona.

Getting Eric Davis was a bonus. Always enjoyed watching him.

Joe Morgan was there today and Bench will be there tommorow. Morgan signed for no one....

Very nice everyone. I made it out today and didn't do too good. I could've gotten more but didn't have enough things for autographs. I'm so pissed I missed Gordan Beckham, Ozzie Guillen and Harold Baines.

this ST i've had a pretty successful run at the angels. i've missed about 7 days since full squad reported. mainly i get brandon wood for my collection and just a few players that i like.
brandon wood: about 20
terry evans: 2/2
hank conger 2/2
nick adenhart 2/2
peter bourjos 2/2
torii hunter: 3/3
jared weaver 1/1
arte moreno 1/1

some of my favorite 2009 ST brandon wood signed items so far...
1st mlb hr ticket stub
2007 rookie season game used broken bat
sealed 2003 bowman draft pack
2003 bowman draft wrapper
dual SS romlb with phil hughes( they both had their mlb debut on the same day )

yesterday and today i went to the giants game for lincey.
yesterday i was in a good spot, however he went the opposite direction from where i was so i repositioned - bad move. then as he was inching closer to me he started to go back to where i was originally. so i got in the middle of those locations, but at that point he started passing by and doing like every 3rd or 4th person. i wasn't up at the fence so i didn't really have a good chance. then the game let out and that meant even more people rushing the fence. today i didn't see his car when i got to the stadium after i got off work. oh well. i'll try again tomorrow before going to the halos/a's game.
apparently after the game, lincey comes out to the player lot and starts up his range rover. then he comes over to the fence and will sign for as long as he has time. he walks the fence back and forth a couple of times.
*i had heard this before he came out and sure enough he did nearly exactly like the guy said.*
he signed for a good amount of time. i believe he SS all the balls and did multiples for several of the same people. very nice kid. he didn't really say much. it was cool to see him really trying to accommodate so many people.

as for the discussion about getting the ball back from beckham...

*this is just my opinion. i'm pretty open minded, however i don't see the point in going back and forth in a childlike manner trying to change someone else's view. if you disagree with me, i understand - no hard feelings.*

i'm not sure if the original message has changed, but i didn't read that he "pulled the ball out of tim's hand"? whatever the case, i understand and can agree with all viewpoints/opinions relating to how this came about as well as the difference between collectors actions as opposed to dealer actions.
even if he did do this, so what. it's his ball. a person will sign or not sign of their own free will. sure it could have pissed off tim and then caused him to stop signing. oh well. it's the luck of the draw. if i were there and it was my only opportunity at tim, hell yeah i'd be pissed if he stopped if i were going to be next person. but there is no guarantee you will get who you want - especially an autograph how you would like it to look and where it be positioned on your item(s). i would've said something sarcastic to the person, but then again what leg do i have to stand on? would i have gotten into a fight? please, that is absurd!
i wouldn't have taken my ball back. i myself am excited to get anything signed. when a player asks where they should sign my ball, i have always said 'it's all you - where ever you like.' they could sign across the seams and i'd think it would be fantastic - seriously!
this is a hobby for some and for others, a business. players don't have to sign. if they are willing to sign, i have no problem with someone not wanting something personalized. nor do i have a problem with someone saying, "hey could you sign the sweet spot." some of these items aren't cheap nor easy to come by. but whatever you offer the player to sign, there is the risk of something going awry. that's the sacrifice you should be willing to take. i guess my only problem is people not being polite. but then again, not everyone says please or thank you whether the item(s) are for PC or not.
more than likely, with all the IP autographs they do, they know that some of these people are autograph collectors and some are dealers. requests for autographs is part of the business. i'm sure that they would hope that what they're signing is going to be cherished, however they know that that item may have value at some point. sometimes people have to sell whatever they have no matter how cherished the item(s) may be.
no one is perfect. i don't believe anyone should be acting like they're the most courteous of autograph seekers - no matter how much they say they know both sides. *even though this last statement uses a phrase that scuba worded similarly, NO this isn't a personal stab at him*
i've met a lot of great people doing this hobby. some people we just chance meetings and others have been casual autograph acquaintances. though when it came to complete strangers, i've never witnessed a person that got multiples signed offering someone else that didn't get an autograph one of their signed items of an exact item( this may be confusing to read but i hope it make sense? ). yeah we could go back and forth with, maybe those items were accounted for. let's just say they weren't. not many people would say, "hey complete stranger i just got 3 romlb signed and you didn't. here let's trade your unsigned for one of my signed." sure it could happen and probably has happened, but i doubt everyone has or would do this. i wouldn't with a brandon wood item, but that's just me cause i collect brandon wood autographs. with other players, i haven't thought to do it but i'm not above just giving autographs away.
with me, it really is just the experience. during the fall league, i've asked people right there if they want me to get some of their multiple stuff signed for them. i'll get a couple cards signed and then give them back. i've never taken any of the "here you can have one" cards they offered. it's all fun for me.
thank you for your time.
