Hello all,

Recently My wife's grandfather passed away and I have been given the task to work on his card collection and sell it.

Don't get too excited they are mostly new cards, 80-1995 or so, so there is a ton of junk. He owned a coin/bike/jewelry/everything store where he would buy and sell just about anything. He often took in cards in trade, etc.

There really isn't anything of much value in here to be honest. Tons of stars, rookies etc.

SOOOOO, my question.

What is the best way to try and sell this stuff off?

I have started going through the colleciton and pulling out all of the major stars that I THINK I should sell in lots, etc.

There are probably lot sizes like this:

Griffey - 300-400
Thomas - 300-400
Ripken - 400-500

Similar lots of Gwynn, Brett, Boggs, Molitor, Yount, and all of the other stars.

Is selling them via lot on ebay the way to go?

What to do with the remaining 50,000-70,000 cards?

I thought about breaking them up into teams, but is that even worth the time and effort? What could I even expect for 2,000 random Cubs cards? $10?

Any help is appreciated.

sounds like you got enough fire starter to keep you warm for a little bit this winter!!

seriously though there wasn't really anything good insertwise in all those cards?

I think you would be surprised on the 2000 card lots of the big market/popular teams.

And I think the player lots of the "stars" would be a good route.

Also, for the plain ole commons, I would probably put them on craigslist as just that and see if anyone is interested.

And I would be interested in any Pacific inserts (if they are in good shape)

I think breaking it up into star and team lots, if you're willing to invest the time. I doubt the return will be significant, even then.

Your estimation of the value of team lots seems about dead on, though I often see similarly sized team lots end with no bids at all. If you do decide to break it up by team, I'd definitely be interested in any Pirates.

Good luck breaking up the collection, and hopefully you find a gem or two mixed in there.

The main problem I see with doing the team lots are:

Time - it will take forever to sort

Shipping - It will probably cost $10 to ship each team

Well, I am going to work hard to try and get something out of it for my father in law considering where these cards came from.

Tramers, what did you pay for the 2000 card lot?

There are quite a few inserts, but again, nothing that I can tell is extremely rare.... There are a stack of about 1500 Topps Gold cards, 15 or Jeter Rookies.......yadayadayada

If we burned all cards from the early 80's to mid 90's collectors or Brett, Gywnn, Canseco, Roger Clemens, etc would be Shat out of luck.
