So last night saw this item popped up in my nightly search for Doerr:

Never heard of them before but the seller had numerous other proofs and samples cards for sale, including many from other players in the 2001 Topps Tribute set. So I grabbed it up for the BIN and felt good about it.

Taking a look today, and at some others, I'm a bit more weary. It almost looks like a scanned image just printed out and then some marks add to make it look like a print. Won't know for sure until I get it in I guess but just wanted to give the other player collectors a heads up so they can grab their players, depending on if you want to take the risk.

Also what's everyone's thoughts on these? Legit? Would something like this even make it out of Topps (I know stuff makes it out from all companies but seems like less so from Topps)?

Thanks,
Jeff

i have no experience in this but my gut says they are legit. Crazy stuff comes from the topps vault all the time. I have seen other proof cards that are legit. As a player collector and if I didn't have the card and wanted it I would take the gamble like you did!

once again this is just my opinion, it's not based on exact physics ;)

Leximo sells tons of this stuff. He must have a connection somewhere. I'll say this much, I don't have any from that set but he has a lot of "proofs" or print scrap from a lot of other releases that are certainly legitimate so I'd feel ok about it. They're interesting curiosities

I think it's legitimate from time of production , not something made last week .

It looks like a scrap from an uncut sheet.

That was my initial thought as well, as some of them have color bars on the side and some (like the Doerr) look like they may be from the bottom of a sheet.

Thanks for the input guys-glad my initial thoughts look to be right.

Taking a look at all his stuff and almost all the proofs from multiple sports are proofs from late 90s-early 00s TOPPS issues. Either he had a collection or maybe he's a former worker from that time period?!?

Either way I think it's pretty neat stuff---wonder how PSA/BGS would grade some of the no-foil/uncut cards if submitted? Also are these something that Beckett eventually adds to checklist? Doubtful right?

Thanks,
Jeff

No way they get added to Beckett. But that's not saying they shouldn't be checklisted

Agree-Only reason I asked is they did add those crazy Topps Blue cards which was a Giveway back in 2006 I believe and those weren't pack issued or a general release either.

Definitely agree on adding them to the customer checklists...added them to mine.

Thanks,
Jeff

All of their stuff came from a former employee at topps. At one point the bought sheets that contained approximately 20k cards. I still have the email with all the information from them. I bought a bunch of puckett stuff from them directly about a year or so ago.

Great info... Would love to see a copy of the email if you don't mind!!

It's on card stock (I was expecting paper-like stock) and looks almost identical to the final product from 2001...maybe it was the final proof before printing?!

All in all, an very awesome addition to my collection, and in my opinion, definitely something that legit.

Thanks,
Jeff

I was the editor for this set and I just missed out on getting an uncut sheet of it (freaking player licensing guy called dibs before I could).

Damn...maybe he's the former employee the EBay seller bought from. So these actually look legit to you as well?!

Jeff

Yes, those that show borders are definitely from a Topps sheet. One of these sheets was hanging on a wall in the design department, so I went and asked one of the managers there if I could have it when he took it down (they rotated sheets of new sets they were proud of). He told me that one of the player contract guys had already called dibs. That may be the very employee who funnels stuff to this seller. If I had been given it, it would be framed on a wall in my house.

I guess it depends on your definition of "legit," as Topps never intended for these to get out and be sold, but I'm certain those were cut from a sheet made by Topps.
