I gotta think it makes the most sense to only do a redemption process for 1952-1956 cards. After '57 the cards were standard size and can easily be inserted into packs. Like others have said, it's a logistical nightmare to inventory, label and assign redemption codes to cards that in most collectors eyes won't be worth the paper used to print them. Then either Topps eats the cost of packaging and postage or we the collector ponies up the money to have their redeemed card shipped to them. If Topps pays, that equates to a huge expense to the end user (us) at some point in time, either in increased product cost or watered down future product. Alternately, if the collector pays shipping, how many unclaimed cards will Topps have sitting around because nobody wants to pay $2 to have a .03 Danny Heep sent to them. Random insertion is the only thing that makes any sense at all, at least to me.

Dear Collector:
Thank you for entering your codes. YOU HAVE WON THE FOLLOWING VINTAGE BUY BACK CARDS:

1. 1986 Carney Landsford
2. 1985 Buddy Biancalana
3. 1984 Bobby Meacham

If you would like them delivered, please include $3 for inital shipment plus $1 for each additional card.

This promo SHOULD have nothing to do with codes. The actual cards should be in every six packs with redemptions for over sized cards.

I recall fondly opening a pack of 2001 Topps Traded (2002?) and pulling a 1987 Topps Traded Tony Pena! Of course, there was no proof that it wasn't just a .03 common... actually ran across it yesterday as I was packing to move.

I sincerely hope that every buyback card is embossed or hologrammed. A "buyback CofA" would promote fraud and abuse unless each and every hologram were registered... not likely to happen.

Thanks for posting this, first I've heard of it; looks like I will need to buy a few boxes and roll the dice.

I'd pay the shipping if it was a Mickey Mantle rookie

you get my point though: enter the code, if you don't like the card, let them keep it.

Yep, 1991 Topps gave you the chance to win complete sets of Topps from 1952-1990, and the instant win vintage cards. I <3 retro!

In 1991, I had the possibility of actually getting a 1986 Butch Hobson Topps card in MY PACK!

Now I have to go to a computer to type in the redemption code -- and possibly pay shipping and handling? -- for my 1987 Topps Mike Greenwell card.[/quote:3m02p9ga]

Major props to Topps if they insert a Frank Thomas RC NNOF or a 2006 Alex Gordon RC in these...

I agree. Embossing an expensive vintage card might bring the value down, and embossing a cheap common isn't going to make it any more valuable.

This is a horrible idea... just saying. No matter how they do it, somebody is going to complain. Not to mention the fact that Topps is going to regret the idea because they suck at redeeming their redemptions.

I would rather get an extra 2010 Topps card than a 1989 Topps Vance Law.
Of course, it would be awesome to pull a '50s or '60s card.
But there will be ten-thousand '80s cards for every one '50s card.
It's still kind of a cool promotion, and it's better odds than in 1991, when the odds were nearly impossible.

It appears to be something free, additional to the regular cards. I don't read it as the redemption taking place of a card in the pack. I'm not sure how many people complaining actually buy boxes / cases of base Topps? Everything is a negative.

I just hope they don't/haven't buy the cards from Burbank
Otherwise boxes will cost $75.00 a box for flats & $200 per jumbo!
$40 a Blaster

I kinda liked the way that UD did these. IMO it's the right way.

leave all the pre-80s alone
