From the Beckett Blog - apparently, we're going to get a buyback per pack... That explains the shortage of 1986 and 1987 Topps in the marketplace.

. and buying back a million baseball cards for a unique promotion surrounding 2010 Topps Baseball and . . .

It says 1 in 6 packs will have the redemption, not every pack (thank god!)
Just when I was able to get rid of all of my 1990's crap, it looks like it is coming back my way!

I never thought this promotion was about expensive cards, but you could wind up with one anyway.

If I were 14 today, 1990 (the last year of cards from the promotion?) was five years before I was born, so it would still be pretty cool to have for the average kid who knows little about cards :) Hard to believe, but 1990 is twenty years ago already.

I guarantee that everyone here who gets a redemption card will be looking it up online, except for the dealers among us who will be happy to sell them in lots :)

But this promotion, just like the earlier one, is more geared into getting 'non-elite' collectors into collecting again. Any 14 year old kid who loves baseball and has even a basic love of baseball cards would still love receiving a 1968 Topps common card. If this wasn't you at some point at your life then I don't understand why you're here...
That's well understood, but out of those 1,000,000, how many do you think will be from the 50's and 60's vs. 1985-1995 ??

I recall fondly opening a pack of 2001 Topps Traded (2002?) and pulling a 1987 Topps Traded Tony Pena! Of course, there was no proof that it wasn't just a .03 common... actually ran across it yesterday as I was packing to move.

I sincerely hope that every buyback card is embossed or hologrammed. A "buyback CofA" would promote fraud and abuse unless each and every hologram were registered... not likely to happen.

Thanks for posting this, first I've heard of it; looks like I will need to buy a few boxes and roll the dice.

And that's exactly what Topps is hoping for ;)
Btw - I reeeaaaly hope there is some kind of stamp or something to distinguish these at least on the more modern cards. Otherwise what is the point? Conversely, I hope they don't go and screw up the vintage cards like they did in Heritage.

It’s a huge promotion. A million cards is not easy to buy back. We’re going through the process now.

Really? Come to the Shriners' show in MA next month. That will get you to a million, and that's just a mid-sized show.

Or just take back every unopened box of 1988 Topps out there. You'll have extra.

Do the buybacks include other Topps sets (anything from Topps Update to Bowman Sterling) or is it limited to the basic Topps?

Topps (the product) is inexpensive so virtually anyone has a shot at something that could potentially be pretty cool.

As far as taking a risk on these, the odds aren't in your favor. When I read "one of every base card ever produced" the irrational side of me instinctively pictured a cool, valuable card. But my rational side kicked in: there's a lot of JUNK.

Yep, 1991 Topps gave you the chance to win complete sets of Topps from 1952-1990, and the instant win vintage cards. I <3 retro!
If you win something that cool, then obviously that's a pollute your britches type pull.
However, I don't think anyone will be as excited with a Gregg Jeffries buyback

And Jeffries will actually be one of the better pulls...in the whole scheme of Topps base sets...you could get Les Lancaster or someone like that instead. (ultimately its brutal one way or the other)

I'm guessing just the Topps base brand itself.

Personally, I'm very hopeful for a stamp or hologram of some sort on the cards. I'm almost thinking they'd have to - otherwise what to stop guys like Burge from unloading more of his crap on us!

At any rate, the reason I want a stamp/holo on the card is so that I can have around 20 more Butler cards to chase! :D

If they embossed or marked the card someway to show it was a buy-back, like they did with Heritage, wouldn't that ruin the value of some of the "money" cards out there?

I would be upset if I happen to get the 52 Mantle, or something like that, and it came to me with a big gold seal imprinted on the card.

free shipping?

I would be funny to get a crapload of the redemption's and then send them to random address around the neighborhood. This shipping cost would be like $2 per at least and imaging the nightmare it would be to ship a million cards to a million different addresses.

If you think the redemption process is bad this year, just wait till next when there is a million more to deal with. I will be first to laugh when I get a "Could not be produced" message.

I think the idea is to bring people to the website to check out thing, buy products and get info. Afterall
topps has been making money on etopps for years now and they don't even have to make the cards!

I don't think they've really wrapped their heads around the logistics of this. The man hours involved in a project like this appear to to make it a non-starter.

Acquiring and storing the million cards alone is going to be a nightmare - I mean really, a million cards?! Even if they have them stored as efficiently as possible, that's 200 each 5000-count boxes. Next they're going to have to inventory these cards, develop a corresponding code for them to be entered online and have that code printed onto one million redemption cards. That's just to get them "packed out." Then they have to be able to efficiently access any one particular card of this million-count inventory for the collector that actually wants to physically take possesion of their 1975 Johnny Wockenfuss or whatever card they pull. And the question of authentication is a legitimate one - whatever they do - buyback emboss, encasement, ride-along COA - will also need to be done x1,000,000. Then they'll have to be able to package and label them all for shipping and send them out into the world in a timely (!) fashion.

Other than all of that, what could possibly go wrong?! Good luck with that... this has fiasco written all over it.

The redemptions for these are going to be labeled more vaguely on eBay than the Exquisite redemptions were in 2006 or Mystery Cuts.

Thats very cool!

Agreed!

And if they can somehow manage to make these so they can not be forged via a stamp, sticker, or something that links said buyback with said sticker # or something, I'll be buying a ton!
