Thanks Anthony. Maybe I need to be better at using emoticons
or something so I come across less confrontational or something. I wasn't trying to intone that "silly" meant of no use or anything. I actually like to have conversations about what "great" consititutes for a baseball player. DId anyone see a greater athlete than Bo Jackson? But he won't be on any of our lists. Canseco's 40-40 was a great thing in his day, but then there was a time when Howard Johnson's 30-30's were a big deal in the late 80's!
Here's the list I put together:
Barry Bonds
Ken Griffey Jr.
Alex Rodriguez
Albert pujols
Manny Ramirez
Frank Thomas
Mark McGwire
Sammy sosa
Ivan Rodriguez
Mike Piazza
Barry Larkin
Derek Jeter
Roberto Alomar
Vlad Guerrero
Juan Gonzalez
Chipper Jones
Todd Helton
Kenny Lofton
Greg Maddux
Randy Johnson
Roger Clemens
Mariano Rivera
Pedro Martinez
Johan Santana
Tom Glavine
I tend to downplay the counting stats I guess and go more for 162 game avg. paired with a solid career and awards to show you were good (or the best) in your day. Baseballreference.com is great for this. Craig Biggio was truly great at being durable during his 20 year career, but his numbers at 2B for any given year don't seem great to me compared to ALomar, Chase Utley, or even Carlos Baerga for those who played the same position during this time period. But he was good and consistent for a long time. I think my only limb I might be on here compared to others is Kenny Lofton. Over 600 SBs- most in your time period. Very similar to Ichiro stat-wise and Lofton led the league in SB for 5 straight years. Ichiro seems to be on every list. Ichiro seems fairly one dimensional- his hit totals and average are great, no doubt. BUt his walks, Ks and slugging are not very great. In another year or so I don't think I coudl keep him off.
BTW if anyone's interested i made up a spreadsheet to compare 162 game career averages of the 1B and OF "sluggers" from this period. I have a hard time trying to parce out the Delgado's, Palmiero's Sheffields, etc. from JuanGone, Albert Belle and the like. I've been meaning to do that for a while and it helped with making my list. Adam Dunn, Rafael Palmiero, Jim Edmonds and others all came out below "non-listed in anyone's top 25" (I don't think) Edgar Martinez and David Ortiz! And Ryan Howard is statistically nasty in his young career.
