This may be true for the guys who actually become something. All the misses take a heavier toll on your wallet than if you were to wait and see which guys become something.
All of this feeds into instant gratification which can only drive up prices and hurt the unsuspecting.

Also...I really don't condone paying a large amount for a card and in my mind I won't but if you had a chance to get a card of a very promising player for $200 bucks and he becomes the next big thing then you are looking at large multiples of value there so its still relatively small investment.I get these cards so I don't have to later.Not to make money on them.I also don't like the chance of them being unaffordable later on or having to wait 20 years to buy them.
