So the Yankees have signed two Type-A free agents, already losing their 1st rounder in the Sabathia deal, so what do the Jays get besides a Supplemental 1st Round pick?

To be honest with you, Baseball 1st rounders don't pan out 49.9% of the time. Football and Basketball are the best Drafts. Other than that a first round choice in 09 for Sabathia is well worth it.

Im not thrilled with this signing at all. As a Yankees fan, I would have much rather given a 2 year deal to sign Sheets as I think he is the better pitcher. I know Burnett is good when he is on, but often is he really on?

If I'm not mistaken, even with the 2 HUGE signings, the Yankees payroll will still be lower than 2008!

yes with the signings of burnett and sabathia that is a total of around 40 million per year, they lost around 88 million loosing andy, giambi, abreu, and pavano.

I'm not criticizing the Yanks, I'm just purely curious as to what the Jays get as compensation, and what other teams will get if the Yanks continue their spending spree.

1.5 Billion Dollar payroll and may still not make the Playoffs

Nice. Agreed with all the non-yankee fans. Burnett cannt start a full season, and thats what the yanks need him to do.

Living 5 miles from Miller Park, I went to 3 games he started, he left each one injured. Ben Sheets has a bad elbow and will be a disaster for any team that signs him long term.

I am truly at a loss to explain how a guy who over the last 5 years has averaged a little over 10 wins a season can get an 82.5 million dollar contract...

This is the reason the Yankees are in the position they are in right now of having to attempt to buy championships, which doesn't work. **** is the only homegrown talent they have produced in the last 10 years that they haven't traded away for a high priced player. Look at the homegrown talent the good teams today like the Phils, Rays, Red Sox, Mets (among others) have produced even in the last 5-8 years that are the key to their success today. In today's game, buying championships doesn't work and that's why the Yankees are destined for 3rd place again next year.

Burnett is a very good pitcher. He is generally very good when he's on the mound. People can knock him for his injury history, but he was strong this year, and it isn't like he's missed a ton of time the past few years. I'm happy people are back to bashing the Yankees. It's good for baseball.

Oh, and no one said they're done. Sheets is likely still very much on their radar.

I really hope the Yankees sign Lowe and Sheets too. They could use a few more injury prone or ineffective high priced free agents.

He is SOOO overrated... Carl Pavano part 2.

Agree ...he is injured every year......same with Ben Sheets....what are they thinking.

there thinking they can buy a world series.

Yeah because Josh Beckett has always been such a picture of health. Come playoff time, Burnett is the kind of arm that can elevate a team - health issues or not, he is an elite talent.

good talent....elite?? hmm I wouldnt say that.

Um, yeah. Are you serious? Let's compare.

2008 Yanks that came up in the last 5-8 years:
Cano, Cabrera, ****, Chamberlain, Veras, and Ramirez all saw significant time in 2008. Hughes and Kennedy would have if not for injury. Other home grown talent includes Posada, Jeter, Rivera and Pettitte.

2008 Red Sox that came up in the last 5-8 years:
Youkilis, Pedroia, Ellsbury, Lester, Buchholz, Papelbon and Masterson all saw significant time in 2008. Other home grown talent includes Jason Varitek.

2008 Mets that came up in the last 5-8 years:
Wright, Reyes, Murphy, Pelfrey, Smith*, and Heilman* all saw significant time in 2008. Niese will be up for 2009. That's it.

I'm not going to compare the Phillies and Rays, because they obviously have a lot more home grown talent than these teams do. However, if you're going to say that the Yanks don't have as much recent home grown talent as these other teams, you're nuts.

* has since been traded.

there thinking they can buy a world series.

Unlike the Mets. Pure and cheap payroll.

What is wrong with you?
Who the hell brought the Mets into this.Obviously they have a high payroll,I never said they werent trying to buy a world series team.

the yankees failed to sign their 2008 1st and 2nd rounders this year, so they'll get those picks back next year, while losing their 2009 to these two signings.

SO, in reality, they'll still have a 1st and 2nd round pick in 09, but they could have had 4.

This is why I hate the F**#*!@ Yankees!

And there fans carry themselves around like they are king S&$! and they wonder why they win??? Because you are morons they pay too much for the players..... and outspendmost teams by 100+ Million.

No one should give Cashman any respect..... he has the easiest time as any GM in baseball, he overspends and then they win..... And we call him a genious?

He is a moron that was given a gift job...... Anywhere else in the league he would drag a team into the ground, without those $$$$$$.

I HATE Burnett now!!!! From what I heard he has had similar offers but he chooses to sign with the biggest rival of my hometown team, He has a sour attitude and a move to NY will make him worse.

Heck with baseball and the MLB, I have almost given up hope with the MLB..... They are not even giving anyone a chance and heck even pressureing the players to sign in NYC.

I root for the underdog in the playoffs, but with them signing every FA in the world...... the underdog will not even have a chance.

I am seriously feeling sick to the stomach, and I did not even want my jays to resign a.j.

Heck with this!.
