Joc Pederson OF Los Angeles (NL)
This former 11[SUP]th[/SUP] round pick has been on a tear lately as one of the hottest hitters in the minors. Over his last 10 games he has 6 home runs while hitting .475. Overall for the season, Pederson is hitting .314 with 17 home runs and 22 steals. Pederson could be a prototypical 5-tooler, or could just be getting helped by the California League's inflated hitting numbers, but either way he is worth watching.
Hunter Morris 1B Milwaukee
Morris quietly has the home run lead in the Southern League with 23 round trippers. He is hitting .301 with 98 RBI’s to give him an OPS of .908. The biggest knock on Morris is his strikeouts, as he has wiffed 103 times in 121 games. Look for Morris in September and eventually could end up the Brew Crew’s first baseman of the future.
Tony Cingrani P Cincinnati
One of the most surprising seasons of the year, Cingrani dominated the California League before being promoted to Pensacola of the Southern League. His Cal League numbers were 5-1 with a 1.11 ERA in 10 starts where he wiffed 71 batters in just 56.2 innings. Since earning his promotion he has not slowed down. The 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] round pick is 5-3 with a 1.81 ERA in the Southern League, and between both levels his ERA is just 1.50. Many scouts do not think his pitching style will work in the bigs as a starter, but he will remain in that role for the time being.
Gregory Polanco RF Pittsburgh
Probably the most overlooked prospect in the minors, Polanco is putting together a breakout season in his first year of full season ball. Hitting .328 with 15 homers and 81 RBI’s, he also has swiped 40 bags. His 15-20 homer and 50 steal potential mean Polanco could move through the Buccos system quickly if he continues to perform the way he has up to this point.
Mike Foltynewicz P Houston
After a horrendous 2011, Folty has bounced back in 2012 while repeating the same level. In the South Atlantic League he is 14-3 with a 2.78 ERA in 24 starts and has struck out 109 in 139 innings. This former 1[SUP]st[/SUP] round pick has regained his confidence after a line in 2011 of 5-11 with a 4.97 ERA and could skip the California League and jump straight to Double A Corpus Christi, especially if the Astros want to spare him from having to pitch at Lancaster.
Adam Morgan P Philadelphia
Another 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] round pick who has outlived expectations, Morgan has become a strikeout machine. In the Florida State League this season, he threw 123 innings and fanned 140. He recently earned a promotion to Double-A Reading where he has succeeded as well, making 2 starts and going 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA. He also continues to miss bats at an impressive rate. Look for him to begin 2013 in Triple-A.
