I got it through my Ebay messages..

On actual ebay?

I've never gotten it. So I don't know what to say really, but generally if it's actually in your messages on actual ebay it's real. At least I've never heard of it not being yet.

Never seen that before, but then again I'm not from CA. I would just ignore it and let them pursue their "legal action."

All it seems to be is legal action to find his info. I don't even understand why that would be so hard if they were actually the government.

Maybe they are finally starting to crack down on taxable enterprises through the net.

Weather or not this is legit, it is completely plausible.

The State of California is looking into all lost revenue streams to handle the operating debt. Well over 10,000 California corporations and LLCs are organized in Nevada therefore avoiding the minimum state franchise tax of $800...and all of these numbers add up.

They've been trying for years to come down on Nevada entities that are truly California entities simply evading taxes...but the everyday consumer is easier to grab.

Very interesting. According to the CA Board of Equalization website the 1-800 number is legit and they recently put out this press release:

Link

Based on the Press Release it appears the CA government is in dire enough straights that they will be collecting use taxes from buyers of out of state merchandise.

All I can say is good luck to them........I think 99.9% of the people that sell on ebay could easily show a loss.........and even so, I wonder if/how ebay would handle giving out personal information to people that are not directly bidding or sold you an item.

Very interesting article none the less.....is CA the only state with this "use tax" clause......

Just thinking about this situation. They should just come up with a standard internet sales tax for the entire country if they realistically want to get the tax from sales. There's no way in the world that every last person is tracking and keeping receipts of purchases they made on the internet. Especially places like craigslist.

The funny thing about that article from the Californian government is that they consider more than 2 sales a year to be a business. I could set up a yard sale and sell more than 2 items. That's pretty dumb.

That would require them to deal with the computer age, and if there is anything we've learned over the last ten years, it's that large entities (be they governments or groups like the RIAA) don't adapt well to the way computers/the internet have changed things.

Actually, we had a thread on the yard sale tax issue not that long ago, and technically you would owe sales tax if you were 100% going by the book.......
