He should have hit his 1st HR in Miami. He could have walked into the stands and picked it up after the game.

Honestly? Just think about it. What would you do if you were that fan? I would have given him the ball, no thoughts about it, no questions asked. What a *****.

I would have asked for a even trade. Bat from the player for a ball from me.

Simple, easy and effective. This dude is a *****. Plain and simple.

As a Coghlan fan and collector, I would have asked to meet him and get an autographed bat or ball. No harm in that...if the jack-off didn't ask for the authenticator or Hanley autograph, it most likely would have been a smooth deal.

Coghlan comes off like a world class D-BAG......

After reading the blog, I don't think the fan did anything wrong. Maybe a bit overboard.... but come on

I am not surprised Sewell was a jerk, he was with the Angels, and a major tool back then.

Read the blog, it changed my mind

This guy just makes me shake my head. I'll never understand the need to feel that you must get your "due" for something such as catching a guys first homerun ball. I'd definitely have given it back with no questions asked, but then I dont feel that everyone else in this world owes me something. Those that do, well they are pathetic individuals in my eyes.

I agree with the part about what I would have done (I would have given it to him).... But at the same time, once he catches the ball, he can with it what he wants. Everyone on these boards acts all high and mighty, good ethics, high morals, etc. (not directed at the poster here).

I just don't see how you can blame the guy after reading the blog. He wasn't asking for the world.

Let's flip it this way. What would have done if you were Coghlan? HE was a complete tool. If I were him, I would have thanked the guy for being willing to give it up. I would have tracked down whatever he wanted to get that ball in my posession. How about you?

Right, because the guy wrote it on his blog everything there is true. Asking for two signed gamers (one from a guy not involved) for a ball is ridiculous. Ask for a signed item from the player who hit it and the ability to hand him the home run ball and that's it.

I saw the clip of this guy talking to the Marlins' broadcaster, he has a seriously inflated sense of self.

You also have no clue what he was told about the guy before he came out. Miscommunication is the likely key and if he had been told that the guy was asking for the world, would you then turn around and be nice to that person?

The issue here to me is the guy began making demands as soon as he caught the ball essentially. Getting on TV, showing the world his "ransom" all before meeting the player and talking things over with him. Dont you think Coghlan wouldve gladly given him what he had asked for had the guy had the balls to man up, give the guy his ball, and MAYBE at that point say "Hey, would it be cool if we took a photo and maybe you signed a bat for me too?" That wouldnt have been too much to ask and wouldnt have involved the circus-sideshow that this professional ballhawker (on the same level as professional autograph hounds aka lower than dirt) created for himself.

Stay off the TV, dont do the interview and be genuinely happy to present a guy with his first homerun. Wouldve gone a lot farther to helping him get what he wanted if he had planned a list of more than nothing to ask them for as a "trade".

Yea, I read a big article about this guy last year and how he was going to the Little League WS games and playoffs and catching HR balls and asking for ridiculous things from the kids and their families. Seems like a low-life.

I don't understand the issue at hand.

The guy who caught the ball can request anything he wants, because he has the ball, no matter how outrageous to request. Once the Marlins contacted him it was obvious how much Coghlan wanted the ball so reach for the sky and see what falls in your lap. It's not greedy, it's a simple business tactic. He's just trying to maximize his return and "feeling them out."

What is the cost in a game-used bat? $0 for the players.

Cost to sign it? $0 for the players.

If I was the guy who caught the ball, I would have held onto the Hanley Ramirez bat demand if I really wanted it. Clearly they would have to budge on the demand, maybe ending at a signed ball, but nonetheless, the power of walking in a situation like that it way too powerful.

Regardless, the way this played out, neither party looks good here.

I caught someone's first HR about six years ago at SkyDome (I completely forget who it was; an Indian, I believe but I went to about 60 home games that year, so it's a bit of a blur). The usher explained it was his first and asked me what I'd like in a trade. It didn't even occur to me to want anything in return. I don't collect game used memorabilia, nor autographs of anyone other than a Jay. I certainly have no interest in meeting the guy. So I just gave it to the usher and said, "this will mean a lot more to him than it does to me". I wasn't being high and mighty at all. I just couldn't care less about having a baseball that someone hit.

Maybe it's just me, but there is absolutely no allure to me in keeping a game ball. Sure, it's fun to catch one, but if I ever catch another, it's going directly to the closest kid.

I have to disagree. Chris Coghlan did nothing to make himself look bad here accept not hit the ball in this guys direction. People at the park refer to him as the 'Black Hole' though.

Regardless of this situation(tough to distinguish the truth) if I caught a ball in this type of situation I would ask for a bat, and maybe see the locker room or something to give it to the player.

However, if the player treated me like a piece of trash I would call the deal off in a heart beat. There should be no favors done just because the guy is a professional player.

If he asked for the card in your sig, what would you do?

If Coglhan did? I would just sell it to him at face value(although I'm not really looking to move it).
