Would anyone change their opinion if it was Justin Upton/Matt Weiters etc vs Chris Coghlan?

If it was their first homerun? I would just see if they offered me a gamer ball signed in trade. All that would matter to me would be the game-use and the signature... the significance of the homer would obviously mean more to the player and his family than to myself.

That is, unless he went on to set some sort of homerun record (Season HRs in his first season or career HRs), but how would you ever know that at the time?

Same reason a lot of players won't sign balls on the sweetspot. They just have a bad taste in their mouth from the greed found in different places in the hobby and being demanding (and appearing a pro at doing so) is obviously just one big red flag.

while I can agree with this when the autograph hound is pushy and blocks kids, I don't accept this as a good enough reason for a player not doing it.

Reason: b/c the player ALSO knows (being told from an agent most likely) that to autograph a ball that way gives it value, and it's a value to someoen OTHER than the player signing. Meaning, it's lost money to the player. I get that it's a secondary source of income for some players (not that most NEED it), but then you don't get to act like you're mad about anything but them losing out on money. I felt the same when the original NAPSTER arguement was made.

I have no problems with him grabbing the ball and making his demands - we collect cards here - so understand this guy is trying to collect things himself.

There would pats on the back if one of the guys here got that ball and tried to exchange for stuff.

As for his demand, I just wonder if Chris Coghlan himself knows Hanley enough

Imagine some 'rook' like Coghlan or a member of the Marlins' public relations staff demanding a gamer from Hanley, just because he needed to get his first home run ball?

"I'm not giving away anything...hell man, I don't even want to cut my hair for the manager."

Most important thing is Hanley maybe the Marlins, but he didn't have anything to do with this and this 'ballhawk' kind of tried to go for the 'home run' himself, but was shot down by thinking he can get whatever he wanted.

This guy represents everything that is wrong with the ballpark experience. This is the kind of guy that would knock his grandmother over for a milestone homerun catch.

I saw a lot of Coughlan when he was here in Zebulon and he's about as nice of a kid as you're going to meet. It only took this tool about .4 seconds to make him angry. That's talent.

This guy is pathetic for going around and using people's accomplishments against them.

Ask all you want from that player, and even tickets aren't an unreasonable demand. However, to ask from something from another player is not reasonable in my opinion. I don't know if anyone noticed, but Hanley has been on a hot streak this past week raising his batting average to over .350. You think a pro baseball player (some of the most superstitious people on earth) is going to give up a game used bat he's been using during a hot streak? It also puts a strain on the relationship between Coghlan and the other player where now he owes him even if the star player doesn't mind helping. It is also a bad thing to let someone do this because now the star player of the team is going to feel like every time something like this happens he's going to have to give up something of his.

This life long Brewers "fan" actually switches hats during BP to get balls tossed to him. Someone brought it up on his blog. Look at the pictures from that game that he posted. Some show a Brewers hat and some a Marlins hat. That's a true fan. :?

I heard the self-proclaimed 'Happy Youngster" defending himself a couple of times on Milwaukee radio over the last two days and thought he came off as a bit of a scuzz bag. Then I read his blog... and came to the conclusion that the guy's a total ******. The "youngster" is actually in something like his mid-40's with two kids. The bit about switching hats, the fact that he switches balls, his self-serving, self congratulatory blog... what an a-hole. He's nothing but an opportunistic scam artist who's history is obviously well known to all the principals involved here. There's not an innocent bone in this guy's body and his mealy-mouthed "poor little me vs. big bad MLB" act makes me want to puke. Go away.

I read this the other day and tried to find his blog to link for a friend, but it seems to have been removed for the time being. I wonder why...

a grown man wandering the ball park like he is homeless is silly and i hope he gets knocked down a flight of stairs. his demands remind me of the lone rangers demands on airheads... a football helmet filled with cottage cheese and nude pictures of bea arthur. a photo and personalized bat or ball should suffice!

for coghlan to say good for you and act like a tool needs to realize that he is getting paid to play a kids game! he is going to get asked for his autograph by every man woman and child who coughs up $100+ to see his team play. when does he start to act like this towards everyone? if i am chris i roll to hanleys locker and explain how much the ball means, offer dinner, whatever it takes to secure that leather! as for me if i was a fan and he acted like a ***** i would keep the ball and mail him pictures of it on the anniversary!
