was he an idiot for saying it? yup... do people carry around copious amounts of sand in their va jay jays? absolutely. should he be fined? yes and the money should go to either a childrens hospital, low income dental program or gay and lesbian something or other. sensitivity training? no thats gay.

i edited it because it didnt make sense... so now it still probably doesnt make sense but i feel better about it!

Who cares? The people who get harassed by these comments and slurs day in and day out.

It's easy to sit here as straight men and overlook the bigoted remarks. I personally do not use them and have always tried not to, even as a kid. That said, the words don't bother me much because, in my experience, the folks who use those terms with frequency are the same guys looking around to compare in the showers. I have friends who are gay, family who is gay, students who are gay, and acquaintances who are gay. It's as trivial as skin color.

Hell, my take on it when I was a single man was pretty simple. The more gay men in the room, the less competition I had for the women.

However, this is akin to going out to dinner and having your waiter/waitress heckle you. If it happened, you'd a) deck them; b) ask to speak to the manager; c) get up and leave; d) a combo of the aforementioned. He was out of line and an idiot.

And the kids comment still pisses me off.

I agree, even though I get called a redneck everyday over XBL due to my voice. I don't get up in arms about it, but I do know some people are called out because of their traits in a way much harsher than being called "hick".

In parks where the hostility suddenly blossoms like that, it's almost always over the top at first. This combined with the nature of pro sports makes me not surprised when this happens. It doesn't excuse his actions, but it does explain them IMHO.

Couldn't agree more. I do however appreciate people who use them as slurs. It allows me to quickly suss them out as an idiot. Like Ed Hardy shirts and **********.

Yeah there is a whole lot of missing from the story - like exactly what was said to McDowell. I don't see ANYONE just going on that way without having some sort of provocation. I imagine there was a lot of trash talk directed at the team, he responded, they responded harshly, he responded harshly and etc.

You're right. This huge influx of new fans has been nice but it's bringing in a rowdier more hostile crowd that hasn't been here in the past.

The problem here is the collateral damage that happens when somebody on the field responds like McDowell responded. I'm sure somebody was giving it to him just as good as he gave it back (which as Gilmore pointed out doesn't excuse the response, but does explain it). Fans need to stop acting like a-holes, just as players and coaches need to stop responding to it.

Edit -- this might have seemed like I'm defending McDowell's use of the slurs. I am not. What I intended to get across (but likely failed) was that he should not have responded to the heckling at all.

I use "insensitive words" because I'm not PC like some others. I grew up with cancer and was teased when I lost my hair so I guess I got immune to harsh comments. Nothing offends me really, but I don't compare winkies in the shower. I know I have a small *****! :lol:
