The problem here is the collateral damage that happens when somebody on the field responds like McDowell responded. I'm sure somebody was giving it to him just as good as he gave it back (which as Gilmore pointed out doesn't excuse the response, but does explain it). Fans need to stop acting like a-holes, just as players and coaches need to stop responding to it.

Edit -- this might have seemed like I'm defending McDowell's use of the slurs. I am not. What I intended to get across (but likely failed) was that he should not have responded to the heckling at all.

Like OMG, Fans pay players salaries and the players are obligated to sign a 100 autos per fan and take their abuse. Didnt you get that memo?

~yea, I mean - come on. Players get paid to play a game with no risk to their bodies whatsoever. Who cares about them personally. Give me my autos! ~

Oh booohooo the kids heard a bad word, ohhhh noooeeeesssss. If its so trivial? Why are you making it seem like since you know gay people, You're some social icon?

Congrats on successfully being a ****** bag. I'm completely fine with telling someone they're a ****** because it's not a bigoted statement. My point is, the fact that I have gay individuals all around me, as do the majority of us, doesn't effect me negatively in the least. Those of us who let it bother us should feel sorry for ourselves because we're getting up in arms for nothing.

Again, ******.

No sane guy would say that without extreme provocation. What he said was wrong and homophobic, I'm not defending him or his actions.

But something needs to be done about ********* fans who harass the players. I've heard fans say absolutely wretched stuff to athletes. 50 times worse than what McDowell said.

Why is it that fans can say whatever the hell they want, and if athletes can't? It's always the athlete's fault.

Screw that. Players have feelings. They aren't robots. I'm frankly surprised more athletes don't jump in to the stands and pummel these drunken *******. If someone called my wife or mom an ugly *****, I'd bash their head in

There needs to be more self policing by fans. If you see someone acting like a dick, report him to an usher. If a player is getting harassed, he needs to report it to security. Fans need to be held accountable and be punished

I don't think hurling the gay slurs are really the worst part about this story.

Damn! I agree with you!

Words are words when it comes to insults. Who determines which words are worse? I think both parties are probably guilty to some degree here.

I use "insensitive words" because I'm not PC like some others. I grew up with cancer and was teased when I lost my hair so I guess I got immune to harsh comments. Nothing offends me really, but I don't compare winkies in the shower. I know I have a small *****!
So you want other people to feel the emotional pain you felt when being teased?

I agree with this also. I don't know what happened at the park, as I wasn't there, but obviously people were out of hand, and sounds like the coach lost it and said things that shouldn't have been heard by kids who were there. There's fault on both sides, but unfortunately, the only one who will probably get punished will be the coach who lost his cool.

Agreed.
Something doesnt seem right about this story either.
As far as fans go. I was a trainer for 2 seasons in the south atlantic league and letme tell you, someof the things I heard and saw fans do were beyond over the line. Fans need to be held responsible jsust as much as the players. I worked for the Crocs, and the guys from the military would go to the games, get drunk and harrass the players the entire time. It was rediculuos.

No offense to anyone out there, but I can never understand how stuff like this gets so totally blown out of proportion. This should be dealt with by the people who said the words and the ones who they were spoken to. No need to get all of these organizations involved, and have it become more of a story that it really should.

That is exactly what happened with Kobe. In all honesty, it should have stayed between Kobe and the referee. All of a sudden it becomes a bigger deal because someone who needs to grow some thicker skin gets all in a huff over something that had absolutely nothing to do with them. The words were not directed towards them at all. It was seen on television, and all of a sudden we are offended by something that had absolutely nothing to do with us. They just wanted their 15 minutes of fame, and they got it.

This is the same exact thing. This should not even be news. Just my opinion.

The things said by McDowell shouldn't have been said. Probably whatever elicited that response shouldn't have as well.

That being said, the fact that the family immediately went out and got one of the most infamous lawyers out there to jump on yet another frivolous, celebrity lawsuit leads me to believe they are just looking for some kind of settlement. And as Allred's M.O., using the sensitivity thing to gain sympathy.

There's VERY little chance his statements were unprovoked, so why aren't they suing the hecklers too? I'm sure they probably said some unflattering things to egg him on. Oh yeah, they probably aren't well-off public figures.

People don't go hiring Gloria Allred just because they got their feelings hurt.

No, but I'm not going to curtail my words because it makes people uncomfortable. It has nothing to do with emotional pain. Didn't realize I said I felt emotional pain either. Hmmm...

I'm guessing many of you support the Westboro Baptist Church, and believe that Matthew Sheppard got what he deserved?

From now on I guess we should tell the people that are beaten and tortured and harassed that they are just words.

Remind me to scream profanities at your children the next time we cross paths as well... ::facepalm::

You're barking up the wrong tree. Making a tasteful, factual statement isn't labeling. Again, congrats on taking the context of a statement and turning it into fuel for your ****** fire. If you want to debate semantics and improve your reading comprehension, feel free to PM me. Otherwise, feel free to continue to spin context to your hearts delight.

On record as stating:

I don't support the WBC. I find them disgusting human beings. But calling them disgusting human beings mind offend them so.......::shrugs shoulders:: I don't know what to do there.

Matthew Sheppard didn't deserve what he got.

I watch my language around children.

Not sure you could tell people that are being beaten and tortured that they are just words if you are beating and torturing them. Again..::shrugs shoulders::

I'm not anti-gay.

I'm an Aries. I like watching sports and collecting baseballs cards. I imagine long walks on the beach are nice, but I don't live near an ocean. :( Call me. Let's hang out. ;)
