"Gonzalez is owed another $1.23MM this year and has a $2.5MM club option for 2011."

This is a key sentence as Escobar was likely due to make 8-9 million after arbitration.

Say what? You're going to have to explain that sentence because it sounds fairly ludicrous right now.

Earlier in the season, an Atlanta Brave told Andy Martino of the New York Daily News that Braves manager Bobby Cox hates Yunel Escobar because of perceived lack of hustle.

No way he gets anything close to 8-9 mil in arbitration.

Tim Collins

You hear that? That's the sound of Braden hanging himself. :benson:

Wow. This sure caught me off guard. As much as I truly hate to see Collins go, I do love what AA did here. Collins is (was) by far my favourite Jays prospect. How can you not cheer for a guy who is the size of a hobbit and strikes out everyone he faces? That said, his ceiling is somewhat limited. I'll certainly still root like hell for him but I never did see him as an integral part of the Jays' future bullpen. Pastornicky is another guy I've actually always quite liked but with Hechavarria in the fold, he was looking more like a future utility guy than anything. Gonzalez? Great. He played very well in the first half but whatever.

I remember theorizing that the Jays may be interested in Yunel about a year ago and thinking it would probably take Brett Cecil to pry him away. Ipso facto, I'm quite impressed AA was able to acquire him without giving much away.

And with his early track record of trading (League/Chavez for Morrow looking better and better by the week), I'm not one to judge AA. He's already made four deals, all of which required a certain amount of balls. I can't remember J.P. ever really making a 'show me' trade.

just seems like a stupid trade to me. Why trade away your future?
Well this season they are first in the NL in a postition to make the playoffs so I would assume they would like to win a WS this season. Gonzalez is a HUGE upgrade offensively and defensively and will help them out quite a bit in the post season. And from what everyone is posting it doesn't seem like Escobar had a strong work ethic and also seems like he didn't get along with the team/management. Therefore it is probably best he is traded and hopefully a change of scenery will do him good.

I now have another collection of a player that no longer plays for the Braves (pales in comparison to the Francoeurs). Granted he was having a bad year, but it wasn't like he hadn't shown he could produce in the past. He was also a very good defensive SS. Sucks to see him leave.

I hope he does turn it around.

JP Richardi on ESPN, goes through he list of prospects Atlanta gets, and says he thinks they got the better of the deal...

Well of course dipshit says that, they were all HIS prospects! Anthopolous is just unloading the crap JP had in the Minors ::facepalm:: The Jays didnt clear house, there are prospects, but they had to add to the scouting staff.

I hate to see him go but that is part of the game and I wish him well in his next venture. On a positive note Go Braves!

Most Braves fans who I have spoken with really like this trade. Yunel was a clubhouse cancer who doesn't get it. Never giving 100%. Loses focus easily. He almost got Glaus killed by half-assing a play against the Mets this past weekend. It's literally something every week with him costing the team a run for lack of effort. On top of it, he isn't producing at all at the plate and has no pop in his bat. Getting rid of JoJo Reyes is an added bonus. As someone wrote earlier, addition by subtraction. Unless you follow the Braves on a daily basis, you'd think the Jays got the better of this deal, and you would be wrong.

Here's some good reaction on the deal:

I'm hoping that Yunel gets the message and gets back on track. I'm really bummed to see Collins go, but I have a feeling that he will be in ATL by the end of the year. All he has done so far is put up video game numbers - 15.3K/9 in AA. Pastornicky has a lot of upside but seems to be headed towards the super utility role.

The Jays definitely get the better end of the deal.

Hell, if we start to run away with the divison with his added power, then it was worth it. Still not sure what they plan on doing in two years at SS.

I totally agree with the other post about the Teixiera trade. Such a crappy trade then and now it is even worse. They don't have anything to show for that deal and could've had their SS and Closer for the next 8 years up in the bigs right now.

I don't think Feliz would even be in the bullpen right now for the Braves

Wouldn't even be in the bullpen? Hmmm.. interesting thought. What about next year when Wagner is gone and there is a big hole at closer?

This didn't surprise me at ALL. I mean....239 AVG with 0 HR and your team is in first place.

This trade basically told me the Braves were concerned about 2010 and THAT'S IT. And you know what? Good for them. Bobby's last year, possibly Chipper's last year, they want to win this year - PERIOD. Who were they going to call up at SS? They could play Infante there full time but his extreme value is subbing for anyone, anywhere, that needs a break.

Yunel was a cancer, they got rid of him. Blue Jays are hoping for a future SS and got rid of their "loan" and the Braves got an upgrade.

Win, win.
