steve (san fran): rank these players 5 years from now? belt, hosmer, moustakas, harper, heyward, stanton & posey?

John Manuel: 1) Harper. 2) Stanton! 3) Heyward 4) Posey 5) Hosmer 6) Moustakas 7) Belt Pretty stout group. Still regret letting Ben Badler talk me out of ranking Stanton third in my personal top 50 in the '09 Handbook; had him 10, behind Wieters, Price, Feliz, Hanson, Heyward, Bumgarner, Travis Snider, Cam Maybin & Pedro Alvarez. List has held up well, still wish I had Stanton higher.

Stupid, Stupid answer IMO, I can see the argument for Stanton, but Harper no way in hell. I honesty hope Harper fails in baseball like Reggie Bush failed in football. I hate the hype of this guy plus I've heard he's a two bit A-Hole to everyone but his father and brother. Almost sounds like a Todd Marinovich scenario. I'd put a wager in that Machado will not only be the better player but the one that will show that he belongs in the majors first. Heyward has the ceiling of a outfield version of Frank Thomas, Harper is no Mickey Mantle like BA hypes him to be.

Sure Harper has a bit of an ego, but sometimes that drives players. Hell, look at Roger Clemens.

Ya I agree about Harper not being a bad guy. There must have been one negative episode and then board hawks bought into it and began smearing him with no personal experience. I live in Vegas and other than a fleeting sense of entitlement this kid is alright. It is unfortunate that people with absolutely no personal experience continue to perpetuate falsehoods. I generally reserve forming my opinion of people until I have an opportunity to personally interact with them. I guess that is too "old school" for some of the "youngin's".

My friend was in the locker room when Harper was sent down and told me he flipped out, cursing out Riggleman and throwing stuff.

Harper is an 18 year old being treated like the greatest thing ever, and you expect him to not have any kind of ego. I would like to see any of you act different if everyone was telling you you are theext great thing

Personally I have no opinion of Harper as I have never been in contact with him. However, a friend of mine played with Harper for Team USA and roomed with him, and he told me that Harper is a dick.

I'm curious how many people here have had their puppies run over by Harper, in order to get such a steady diet of hatred for him over the years.

You don't like him. We get it. When can we move on?

I just hate the hype on this kid. Remember the last young guy who came out of high school early and got hyped the hell was Freddy Adu, where the hell is he now. So much for the next Pele, that's what I think about Harper...

But Harper hasn't even got a chance to prove himself, unlike Adu...

Interesting....I hadn't heard this. Did Bryce really think he would be on the roster to start the season? I am sure the veterans on the team CAN'T WAIT for him to be in the bigs and have to baby sit his ego.....Figure it out Bryce. This isn't JUCO anymore.

Wow - the animosity towards an 18 year old kid is amazing. Give him a chance before condemning him. Unless I see him out there talking about how great he is and how he deserves everything, I'll wait to pass judgement on if he's an ahole or perhaps just a teenager.

My friend plays with the nationals and said he shot three players, kidnapped the children of a couple of other players and then went from hotel room to hotel room ripping off the tags on every mattress. He was also the friend with Dez Bryant who had on jeans that were too baggy. He is now being linked to Libya and may have given Gaddaffi hitting lessons.

My friend told me that.

Shows how much a competitor Harper will be. Players like him are rare, handling the pressure is even more. See how he does this year, I guarantee a call up in September, the Nat are going no where. He has a MLB contract, so there is no time clock as far as I know.

You realize it is possible to have connections with major league teams right? Even if you don't. I saw some things in the Angels Clubhouse that I wouldn't discuss, but it sure doesn't mean I didn't see them. Why the skepticism?

Intense hype breeds intense jealousy.

Let's see some actual proof, for once.
