Me too. I'd probably put him at around the 8-10 range, though.

Looks like Callis decided to basically throw out the 2008 season when ranking Rasmus. He's saying they ranked him so high because of what they think he can do at higher levels, not what he has done.

Q: JAYPERS from IL asks:
Very good list overall, kudos. However, I'm scratching my head as I see Rasmus at #3 overall. Let's recap - he struggled to bat over .200 for the first couple of months of the 2008 season, did finally improve, but after succombing to injury he put together what I wouldn't exactly call a mindblowing season, yet his ranking improved substantially since last year's Top 100. He's clearly the Cardinals' best prospect, and will have an excellent shot at making the team this season, but how do you justify his lofty ranking? Thanks.
A:

Jim Callis: He got off to a slow start as a 21-year-old in Triple-A, and I don't hold that against him. He was starting to hit as expected when he got hurt, and I still see him as a solid center fielder who's going to hit for power and average and draw a good amount of walks. His ranking also didn't improve substantially--he was No. 5 on last year's list and the four guys ahead of him all graduated from prospect status. I'll take him over any center field prospect in the game.
Hmm he'd pitch him over Heyward (unless he's a corner outfielder)

I do believe rasmus should still be int he top 10

I really think Heyward at 5 is too high. I'm not completely in love with Jay Hey. I'm head over heals for Colby.

#s 101-105 are:

Q: Nora from RI asks:
Which five prospects just barely missed, and why? (101-105)

A: Jim Callis: The five guys who came the closest and missed are Rangers outfielder Engel Beltre, Nationals lefthander Ross Detwiler, Blue Jays first baseman David Cooper, Rangers outfielder Julio Borbon and Dodgers righthander Ethan Martin. They're all worthy candidates, and Beltre, Martin and Borbon all made my personal Top 100. They just didn't get as much support as the guys who did make it.

This list is very solid. I think this is the best list that BA has put out in a very long time. Rasmus should not be number 3 at all. I think Heyward should be in this spot right after Price. Heyward is clearly #3 status and Rasmus should not even be in the top 10. How many chances is Rasmus going to have? Yeah, he is young yet, but I am not bying into this one. Bumgarner was a little low in my book. He should be a little higher than that. A triple Crown winner in a hitter's SAL, should be higher. And Freeman at 87 is a complete joke.

Ahhh we shall see what comes of Bumgarner..... he still was in Class A, and this year will make him or break him as a buddy of mine said.

We will see if he can put up those nasty numbers all through the system.... my Bum aflac should be in today :D.

I don't need the approval of some guy's list to know that Porcello will be a staff ace someday.

Shep :ugeek:

Just because he's ranked 21st doesn't mean that they don't think he will be a staff ace. I personally believe he is a top 5 guy (or at least top 10), but BA apparently wanted to have some other guys in front of him.

I think of it this way - if there were a draft of all minor league players regardless of salaries how would it go?

Yeah that's a great way to look at it. Don't think Porcello would last until pick #21 though ;)

How many of them would he jump though? Which guys? I think #21 is pretty fair.[/quote:3gox9d4b]

Well it depends if we're going by ceiling or past numbers. I'll assume ceiling...

Porcello's ceiling is somewhere around the kind of season Tim Lincecum had in 2008, as an all-star, a staff ace, and a Cy Young Award winner. It's a very similar ceiling to David Price, although they come from completely different backgrounds as Price was a college pitcher while Porcello was drafted out of HS, etc. But if that is true, you could argue that he would only be a spot or three behind Price, jumping him into the top 5 or 6.

Honestly some of these guys are toss-ups. Would you rather have Porcello or Heyward if they reach their ceiling? A guy that's almost a guaranteed win every 5th game for your team, or a guy who will bat third and hit 40 homeruns and possibly steal 30-40 bases?[/quote:3gox9d4b]

This is why I do not read your blog. Please do your homework.

Oh Canada......
Darock- No reason to spray anger at me.... I do know enough about him, I was just saying I believe Porcello is a better prospect then him is all.

I just said don't take Porcello's numbers this year to seriously as he was told not to throw a curveball all year.

I like Bumgarner as I have a Aflac auto incoming today :D I am just saying I believe Porcello was ranked to low.

You make it sound like these things are going to happen...lets remember these guys are still 19-20 years old, they are FAR from locks. Even the best pitchers in the majors are not guaranteed to win every 5th game let alone a 19 year old.

Yes I know. I said in the post that you bolded "...IF they reach their ceiling", so I'm really just talking here as if they will reach their absolute maximum potential.

But, but, but.... That's not their maximum potential.

Heyward will never be 30/30 or 40/40.

Porcello will be nowhere near a lock to win every 5th game for his team.

The only prospect in history with that type of ceiling was Sid Finch.

Ok, so my point still stands, Porcello still wont win every fifth game and Heyward still won't be 40/40.

He did swipe 15 in 2008, so maybe 30 is a stretch, but I dont think 15 or 20 would be out of the question. And again, I said if they reached their maximum possible potential.

I think he goes down in this department as he gains more muscles and plays against better pitcher/catcher combos...not up.
