Some things that I noticed...

1. It really threw me off seeing Starling's name mentioned 2nd...and then I realized he was #6 but only the 2nd name on the hitters list.
2. I'm surprised, but not surprised to see Bundy at #2 overall. I wonder if his final draft position will be a surprise to us.
3. Wow, Purke has dropped all the way down to #32. Amazing how much a difference a season can make.
4. I was a little surprised to see Sonny Gray fall down to #12 on the overall list, but then again there is a lot of pitching talent this year. I know some still question his size, even though Jim Callis, if I remember correctly, recently tweeted that Cole and Gray had the best top 2 pitches in this draft.
5. I see that Rendon and Cole are still considered #1 & #3 respectively even with some of the questions people have about the two of them. I still can't help but wonder if the Pirates will stray away from this or not.

Obviously Purke stays at TCU another two years.

I would be amazed if the Pirates took Cole #1. Bundy maybe, but I stand by Hultzen as the first pick.

Purke staying two years would give him zero leverage, so one year tops. And really this appears to be Renaudo all over again - he probably goes to the Cape and signs over-slot wherever he falls (barring any setbacks).

Like his arm, Pfeifer has completely fallen off.

It's amazing what a ton of innings, pitching again after rain delays, etc. will do to a pitcher.

"In his first mock draft, Keith Law projected Virginia's Danny Hultzen as the next to wear the crown, but there are a handful of players in the mix, including UCLA right-handers Gerrit Cole and Trevor Bauer, and Rice third baseman Anthony Rendon.

Gardner-Edgerton High School (Kan.) centerfielder Bubba Starling, Owasso High School (Okla.) right-hander Dylan Bundy and Montverde Academy (Fla.) shortstop Francisco Lindor all have some buzz near the top of the draft. The Pittsburgh Pirates are most likely to tab a college player, however, especially one that could serve as both a quick study and reach the show inside of two years, and fill a gaping hole in their organization -- pitching.

That makes Hultzen, Cole and Bauer the heavy favorites, with Rendon and Bundy on the outside. The Scott Boras factor is not expected to be a deciding factor but it can't hurt that neither Hultzen nor Bauer are being advised by the Boras Corporation. For the record, neither are Lindor or Bundy.

You're quoting ESPN and Keith Law in reference to prospects/MiLB....not smart. People like to say Baseball Prospectus is bad, ESPN is worse. If anything, Pirates are SAYING this in order to get Cole or Rendon to come down on their asking price. Danny Hultzen is just their leverage. Huntington has been down this road before and usually screws it up......

Bill (Pittsburgh): Is there any kind of indication on what direction the Pirates are leaning with the first pick in this draft? The different mock drafts seem to be all over the place so far.


Jim Callis: That's because the Pirates still are deciding. It's tough when the best guys coming in (Rendon, Cole) haven't been at their best. I still think it comes down to those two, though Danny Hultzen is a possibility and high schoolers like Bundy and Starling could be as well.

Would BA be the best place to follow along with all that's going on leading up to the draft? Mock drafts, analysis, rankings, all that stuff. I'm interested in the draft this year and plan on watching it for the first time ever. So I'm trying to learn as much as I can before then.
