This thread is kind of of inspired from Jarcar's thread about forgotten players, when pghbuccos and Mstng99tim started talking about Penguins trades.

So what are some of the best and worst trades your favorite team ever made? Any other really memorable trades or severely lopsided trades that you can remember (doesn't even have to be from your favorite team)?

For the Calgary Flames, one trade that turned out awful for Flames fans was the Doug Gilmour trade.

On January 2nd, 1992 Doug Risebrough's (Calgarys new General Manager) legacy was set: Toronto Maple Leafs traded Craig Berube, Alexander Godynyuk, Gary Leeman, Michel Petit and Jeff Reese to the Calgary Flames for Doug Gilmour, Jamie Macoun, Ric Nattress, Rick Wamsley and Kent Manderville.

Although Gimour did have to leave Calgary (do to his unspeakable actions ), it is a shame Calgary didn't get more talent in return. Gilmour was one of Calgarys best players and had scored the Stanley Cup winning goal in 1989 for Calgary. Calgary actually traded away 4 players from their Stanley Cup team (Gilmour, Wamsley, Macoun and Nattress) and an up and coming prospect, Kent Manderville.

The big return for Calgary was Gary Leeman. Leeman was a former 50 goal scorer but seemed to lose all his offensive powers when he came to Calgary. Leeman ended up only playing 59 games over two seasons for Calgary. He scored 11 goals and had 23 points over those two seasons and was considered a Huge bust. Doug Gilmour mean while ended up becoming a LEGEND in Toronto (had one season with 127 points ) and recently had his infamous number 93 honored by the Leafs (Leafs dont retire numbers, they "honor" them.).


A trade that worked out great for Calgary was the Joe Nieuwendyk trade. Calgary, who was rebuilding at the time, traded Nieuwendyk to the Dallas Stars for Dallas's recently drafted first rounder, Jarome Iginla.

This was a trade that actually worked out great for both Calgary and Dallas. Joe Nieuwendyk had 7 productive seasons in Dallas including winning the Conn Smythe trophy and helping Dallas win the Stanley Cup. He also help lead Dallas back to the Stanley Cup final the following season (only to lose to New Jersey).

Meanwhile in Calgary, Jarome Iginla became a huge star winning 2 Rocket Richard trophys, an Art Ross and a Lester B. Pearson. Iginla became the Flames all time leading scorer and led them to the 2004 Stanley Cup Finals.

Worst Flyers trade, and likely one of the worst in NHL history:

Eric Lindros, traded by the Quebec Nordiques to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Peter Forsberg, Steve Duschene, Kerry Huffman, Mike Ricci, Ron Hextall, Chris Simon, Philadelphia's 1993 first round draft choice (Jocelyn Thibeault), Philadelphia's 1994 first round draft choice (Nolan Baumgartner), and $15,000,000

Best Flyers trade, although I hated to lose the guy at the time was Mark Recchi to the Montreal Canadiens in a deal for Éric Desjardins, Gilbert Dionne, and John LeClair.

John Cullen, Zarley Zalapski, & Jeff Parker to Hartford for Ron Francis, Ulf Samuelsson, & Grant Jennings.


Worst Trade...

Jaromir Jagr to Washington for Kris Beech, Ross Lupaschuk and Michal Sivek.

a very close 2nd worst trade would be Marcus Naslund to Vancouver for Alek Stojanov.

both of these trades had to be made due to the Penguins financial troubles and their inability to pay either Jagr or Naslund.

Best Trades:

Marcus Naslund from Pittsburg for Alek Stojanov (not sure why Dave didn't like this trade ) Nasland became the Canucks all-time goal scorer and point getter while Stojanov played 45 games and had 7 points with the Pens.

I think many Canuck fans will disagree with me on this but the trade that sent Trevor Linden to the Islanders for Bertuzzi, Bryan McCabe, and a first round draft pick that ended up to be Jarkko Ruutu was one of the best. Bertuzzi with Naslun and Morrison became the West Coast Express and was one of the best lines in Hockey for about 4 years. Byan McCabe was traded a couple years later for a 1st round draft pick that became Henrick Sedin. If you want to take this trade even further, the Canucks then traded Bertuzzi (after his prime), Alex Auld, and Bryan Allen for Roberto Luongo, Krajicek,(which we traded to get O'Brien), and a 6th Round Pick that became Sergi Shirokov one of our better prospects.



Worst Trades:

Cam Neely and a first round draft pick to Boston, for Barry Pederson. Pederson played three seasons in Vancouver, while Cam Neely spent ten seasons in Boston where he had three 50+ goal seasons. Oh, by the way, did I mention that the Bruins also got our first round draft pick. They used it to select Glen Wesley who spent seven seasons on the Boston blueline.

Best Lightning trade?

In 2002, the Bolts traded their first round pick to the Philadelphia Flyers for two second round picks and Ruslan Fedotenko.

Fedotenko is my favorite hockey player, so this might seem like a "homer" answer, but let me explain.

The Flyers used the first round pick to draft Joni Pitkanen.

The Lightning obtained one of the key pieces to their first and only Stanley Cup with Fedotenko. In theory, if you take Fedotenko away from the Lightning, they lose his two goals in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals and lose 1-0.

Best Trade...

This trade actually upset me at the time it was made. I was a Pens fans even way back then and i was "investing" heavily in John Cullen 89/90 OPC RCs. I was picking them up for around $3-$4 each back then and had accumulated around 20-25 of them. That was a lot of money invested in Cullen for a 13 year old and was so disappointed that he had been "banished" to Hartford. I also felt bad that Cullen missed out on the Stanley Cup just by a few months after getting traded.

After appearing in 22 games in parts of two seasons with Calgary, future Conn Smythe winner and Stanley Cup champion Jean Sebastian Giguere was sent packing for California for a second-round draft pick (Matt Pettinger). The Flames felt more comfortable with Fred Brathwaite and an aging Mike Vernon in goal. The move was one of then general manager Craig Button’s first, and possibly his worst. Giguere’s resume from Anaheim speaks for itself.


Brett Hull is shipped to St. Louis for veterans Rob Ramage and Rick Wamsley. The Flames would win the Stanley Cup in 1989, but the effects of this trade would be felt for more than a decade after it took place. Hull’s scoring prowess was apparent in Calgary, but the veteran-laden team was not the best fit for soon-to-be superstar son of Bobby Hull. The 41 goals scored by Hull the next season would be his lowest total in seven years until the strike shortened ‘94-95 season. Hull’s goal totals in ten full seasons as a Blue: 41, 72, 86, 70, 54, 57, 29, 43, 42, and 27.

Another interesting tidbit about Bret Hull is that his RC is actually of him in the Saddledome as a member of the Calgary Flames. Topps/OPC did some "photoshopping" back in the day and drew in the Blues jersey. I wish i still had the original picture of Brett Hulls RC as a member of The Flames. I seen the original picture back in about 2002.

Toronto trades its first round picks in 2010 (Tyler Seguin) and 2011 (to be determined) for Phil Kessel.

Capitals Best: Jim Carrey, Jason Allison and Anson Carter to Boston for Adam Oates, Rick Tocchet and Bill Ranford.

It's funny because at the time it seemed like a terrible trade, and Ranford was pretty bad for the Caps also. Really it was a great trade because of how Carey fell off afterward and how it opened the door for Kolzig in Washington.

Worst: Dino Ciccarelli to Detroit for Kevin Miller, although there were extenuating circumstances involving a 17-year-old girl, 4 Caps players and a limo that got Ciccarelli, Scott Stevens and two other guys a one-way ticket out of town.

I do remember seeing that card a long time ago but totally forgot about it, so thanks for posting it and pointing it out to me again. Im gonna have to grab a copy of it someday.

Brett Hull actually had a "Rookie Card" that pre dated his official Topps/O-Pee-Chee RC by one year. It was a regional issue, that came came out in 1987/88, that was given out at Red Rooster food stores in the Calgary area.

Damn, what a trade that turned out to be for the Sens and pretty much put the Isles in a mess that they still haven't recovered from (although things are looking up). The Isles are still paying Yashin money every year and owe him $$$ till the 2013/14 season.

that was one of the worst trades the Islanders have ever made and they pay him $2,204,000 every season until 2014-15 actually.

the Isles are also still paying off the Brandon Witt buyout and will pay him $1,333,333 this season and $833,333 next season.

Haha! I get where your coming from, but it looks like Kessel may end up being a 40-50 goal scorer... and who knows what Seguin becomes (Maybe 15-20) or maybe a Kessel to early to judge yet.

samething for next year too you never know(Draft Pick), so far I am happy to have a sure thing in Phil.
