You should all know by now that players today suck compared to the guys from the past.

Heck, Mickey Mantle would hit .450 with 80 home runs, and 200 RBI in today's game...from the left side of the plate only.

Sandy Koufax would average 20 K per 9 IP and have an ERA under 1.00 today.

Shame on you for thinking Boggs belongs in the same sentence with Rose.

Come on now Mike...

we all know that there was no match for 103 mph pitchers in college by the players of yesteryear.

Boggs was 24 during his rookie season, and seemed to be at the top of his game from the time he was called up. Let's compare Boggs and Rose during the ages 24-41, the years that Boggs played.

Rose: 125 OPS+, 3560 for 11405, .318 BA in 2805 games, 12860 plate appearances
Boggs: 130 OPS+, 3010 for 9180, .328 BA in 2440 games, 10740 plate appearances

Rose averaged 23 games a year more than Boggs over this 18 year period (156-133), resulting in 20% more plate appearances. If you give Boggs the difference in their plate appearances, this would be Boggs' numbers:

Boggs: 3604 for 10992, .328 BA in 12860 plate appearances

The numbers are much more similar. Rose had a ton more plate appearances because he played in more games, and by playing on teams that scored more runs. Rose batted leadoff for 2/3 of his career plate appearances, resulting in more plate appearances from there as well.

Boggs walked more and struck out less. I think Boggs gets the edge as the better hitter, but it's very close.

Boggs didn't get to the majors till just before turning 24 (which always amazed me), had the higher peak, but a quick drop to a lower level (I recall hearing his eyesight dropped from 20/12 to 20/40 or something after age 30), and then he hung them up when he could've hung around at least a couple more years in Tampa. Rose had greater consistency over a very long career (a solid, though strike-shortened, .325 year at age 40, then he played all 162 games at age 41) that slid off a cliff at the very end, but no shame there. There's plenty of material for both sides.

...(stats aside)

...talking about hitting, am I the only one that things gwynn is vastly underrated. I considered him a tough out, tough to pitch around (if you didnt want him getting a piece of it), and a GREAT hitter. I wish he had a Manny Ortiz situation where there was added protection for him...

...and I do consider Boggs a Great hitter as well...
