[quote="Jays_Cards":13snhg0h]You guys saying Gordon really need to take a second look at his MLB numbers, especially at what he has done since being recalled from AAA this year. Obviously he has not performed to expectations so far in his young career, but to call him the biggest BC bust is laughable at best.

I don't think they are saying his mlb career is a bust, from a cards perspective his hobby value was a bust...

That is obvious, but is true about the vast majority of the most hyped players from BC at release. Very few maintain release value. Obviously there are exceptions, but even players like Justin Upton and Clayton Kershaw who have had great MLB success are currently selling for less than BC release prices.[/quote:13snhg0h]

I would give it about two weeks for Kershaw....

Even considering only card prices, Delmon Young has to be at least equal with Gordon on the bust list. People only think Gordon because it's more recent history.

I'm not suggesting that I think this is going to happen, but at least with Gordon he still has a chance of living up to some of the hype. It is possible to regain the minor league hype with a breakout season. Something along the lines of Josh Hamilton.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Kerry Wood to this point. I have yet to experience a hobby craze that was as insane as that. BASE CHROME cards were going for $100-125 around here. Bowman base were going for $40. Shortly after that 20K game, a prospector could have made enough to buy a small car. Don't even go into the refractor variations. I think some of the international refractors hit four digits.

Now, you can pick up the Chrome base for say... $3?

Aside from what Mark McGwire's cards did during the summer of '99, I have never seen anything close to that since in terms of burst and bloom value.

I remember being green with envy when a buddy of mine went to a local card shop where they had a chrome version on sale for $125 and a base version for $50. He said a few people were "eyeballing" it and he snuck in with the cash in his hand and snagged it. I thought he had made the steal of a lifetime. The next Nolan Ryan for $50? Sign me up.

Why do people keep thinking Matt Bush was a great prospect? He was never a great prospect, the Padres just made one of the worst moves in draft history taking him, because of signability. Few (if any) had him close to the top of their board. He was never an elite prospect.

Delmon and Gordon are approaching bust territory, so I think it has to be them.

Not like the Padres would have been any better off taking Stephen Drew. In Petco, he may have hit 2 HR's this year. Hard to believe that Justin Verlander is the clear front runner of the most useful player from the 1st round of 2004 draft with Billy Butler the 2nd player.

That's so true. He was insanely hot. The sad thing is we will never really know if he could have kept it going. That's the saddest part of baseball to me. Seeing young dominate pitchers go down to injury is rough.

I remember the Tigers catching heat for drafting Verlander. Pretty much every thing I read at the time said they should have gone with someone else (varying guys).

Wood actually lived up to the hype during his rookie season.
He lead the league in strikeouts, K'd 20 in a game and won rookie of the year.
He K'd 200+ batters in 4 of his first 5 seasons.
But Wood never lived up to the potential of that first rookie season.
However, he at least had a great rookie season.
Most of these other players mentioned sucked from the start, and some never made it out of the minors.
They're the true busts.
At least Wood had/has some success in the Majors.

The 2nd round of that draft has turned out significantly better than the 1st. So far, at least...

oh man I remember the Asadoorian craze like it was yesterday. haha.

and of course Corey's demise still brings a tear to my eye.

Delmon is probably the winner of this thread though
