I will post updates and scans in this thread to chronicle where I am at in completing registry. For the next year or so I will be looking to buy PSA 10s I need at 10$ or less per to try to fill the easier holes in the set. Over time I will start buying cards up with the best grade to attempt to make the best set available. Since I am limited in funds, this set will not get mail days every day. If you happen to have any PSA 10s please let me know.

I have decided against trying my own hand at grading so I will be looking for PSA cards already graded, unless the card I have I know is beyond rare and likly wont show up as a PSA.

If anyone on this board has any advice on this endeavor, please let me know.

My ultimate goal is to complete the finest collection for the nolan ryan master set. This set includes 2006 cards and it likely will take 100 years to do ;).

Great to read John. But to be honest, $10 for base PSA 10s from his playing days isn't going to happen very often, if at all.

Its amazing what you can do when a seller has 30 or 40 cards that fit this criteria for sale at the same time. That said, I expect the ability to do this will dry up faily quickly, and then I will enhance my offers. I just want to get what I can when I can as cheaply as possible.

By the way, great deal on the ryan you picked up. I am jealous.

Glad to hear you're finding them! i know for my Topps 80s Ryans, PSA 9's were running me about $8 when i could find them at auction.

As for my RC pickup, it's one of the centerpieces of my collection. ive wanted to own that card for 26 years and finally found a PSA 5 that met my eye appeal, the price was a pleasant surprise as i was willing to pay more, but wasnt going to turn down the sellers offer lol

Not sure if Keith Conforti is still collecting, but he was a great guy and usually had some extra 10's. The Ryan PSA Registry is what brought me back to collecting. Some great guys on there. I highly encourage you to email the top 10 guys and most would be willing to help you out.

I guess it makes sense to do this as I get them in.

http://www.psacard.com/psasetregistry/M ... px?c=94267

Can you see the images?

have to be a user....don't feel like creating an account, no offense. if you can't post pictures here, no biggie.

good luck in your quest, brother!

You don't have to be a user. Try this http://www.psacard.com/PSASETREGISTRY/publishedset.aspx?s=94267&ac=1
If that doesn't work you can navigate it through the PSA set registry tab the player sets then Nolan Ryan master set the bouwob..

Keith was the first guy I thought of. I don't see any of his sets. They were under the ID Con40 back in the day.

Donato also had a really good Ryan set

At 2,000 cards in the Ryan master set, at $10 a pop for psa 10's, that would be $2,000 to get to 10% completion and 18th place on the Ryan master set registry. With that (very conservative) average price of $10 it would take $10,000 to get up to the 6th place spot with 1,000 PSA 10's and 50% completion. This also assumes you have little or no competition, the cards become available for that, and the other guys on the Ryan registry don't move up at all. Moving up another spot from there would realistically cost at least another 5-10k or so I'd think...

I'm not trying to be a dink, and I wish you all the best in your quest- it would be a great accomplishment. Just trying to add a dose of reality for the magnitude of this project. The cardboard in the plastic can be a money sink.

I hear you. The worst part is that I have over 90% of the set ungraded in various conditions raw already. It would cost me almost $20k just to grade them at $10 per. I may take a stack of cards that I think are in good condition to the natty to see what I can do in a bulk deal.

Getting number 1 is likely imposable, but I have 30+ years to try ;)

If you ever want to be #1, I'd recommend finding out Don Spence's home address. Do you have any experience with deactivating state-of-the-art home security systems? Are you well-versed in the art of armed robbery/hostage negotiation?
