There are three outcomes for this trade
1: Win World Series
2: Resign Holliday
3: Find a new GM (assuming he wasn't pressured to do this)

Why do the Cardinals need a new GM????

He is saying if they dont win the WS this year and do not sign Holliday long term, than the Cards got hosed in this deal and thus the GM would need to go.

Correct, should have put ors. Ideally 1 and 2 happen but I'd take either.

This entire time I've been thinking it was Shane Robinson. Shane Peterson. Not much of a difference, but still, Peterson is the better player.

Clayton Mortensen? Noooooooooooooooooooooooo!

He was my favorite prospect. I had a big stash of him too.

I was really for this for Wallace, and anyone else not named Mortensen.

Hopefully this means that they'll sign him to an extension.

Yikes, not sure I would have given up Mortensen AND Peterson with Wallace, but I am guessing A's are eating a good portion of his contract, which I think would allow the Cardinals to resign him. Anyone heard anything as far as resigning Glaus????

Could be a pretty good lineup next year if they can keep DeRosa, Holliday, Glaus, and Ludwick...

TK

Good point considerting Glaus dosent have anyone breathing down his neck for 3B right now. But i wonder if he can still handle the hot corner.

Hm, really good point there. Incentive laden deal, for sure.

DeRosa could play 3rd next year though. I doubt Glaus + DeRosa will both be back. One has to play third, in my opinion. Although, Ankiel, is a free agent, so that leaves a spot. DeRosa could take Ankiel's spot next year as the 4th OF with added utility duties. So much versatility in DeRosa, and so many options overall. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.[/quote:39idx1ge]

My guess is the resigning of Glaus is going to depend heavily on how they view Freese as being ready for the majors. Personally I think at $12mil/year there ar better and cheaper options for Glaus, but there is no denying the fact that Glaus can still rake when he is healthy....just so far that has not really happened.

DeRosa, Holliday, and Lugo in my mind are a must to resign.

You will DEFINITELY change your mind about Lugo. He is honestly the worst everyday baseball player that I have ever seen.

He will never be an everyday player for the Cardinals........but they need him badly as an upgrade to fill in come off the bench.

I don't think Tyler Greene is much of a drop off from Lugo next year. Given what Ive read on Lugo he's an awful defender. For a backup SS you need plus D and Greene has that right now. Lugos bat is ahead of Greenes today but that may not be the case next year. While Lugo will not make anywhere near his current salary, Greene will be at the minimum and with the money situation the way it will be with Pujols and Holliday, that'll win him the job.

Yeah, only reason I see Glaus resigning is for an incentive laden contract. Of course, with the money saved, you can try to resign some guys. I totally agree with DeRosa and Holliday being resigned, we'll have to see how Lugo plays.

But you have $12M coming off the books for Glaus, $6M? from Khalil Greene. And you also have quite a bit coming off from Adam Kennedy, Todd Wellemeyer, Rick Ankiel. Possibly Pineiro, but I hope he resigns. Probably a few other guys I'm forgetting.

Good point, I forgot about Greene........completely and that is sad because he has shown to be decent at the MLB level. Agreeing with you, I change my position and say Holliday and DeRosa need to be resigned. I would like to see them keep Glaus, but I just dont see how they can sign everyone.

Also, you still have Mather and others that have show the ability to play well at the MLB Level, so it will be interesting next year.

Wellemeyer MUST GO!!!! Dont care how they do it, maybe just forget to bring him back from a road trip or something, but I expect him to be a no-go for next year. Pineiro I think they will resign, he was a great pickup for them. I would think they would try and keep Ankiel unless they trade him, I dont know if they would just let him walk.

Not sure about Khalil Greene, I guess at this point he really doesnt have much of a shot of getting signed by many teams unless someone is desperate. When he was healthy and capable he wasnt horrible, but if they plan on keeping Tyler Greene, Shumaker, Ryan, and possibly Lugo, I would say he would be gone.

I agree that Pineiro will likely be back. It seems like he and Duncan really see eye to eye. But what if Duncan and TLR are gone? Khalil won't be back and frankly I wouldn't be surprised if he retired or took a year off. I don't think DeRosa will return either because he will have big multiyear offers and I dnt think the Cards will have the finances to spend that. I'm not sure what I think about Wellemeyer because he may be really close to a breakthrough. Everything Ive seen goes against that but I'm nt down there everday I'm the pen. Ankiel will be gone for sure and Im 99% sure Glaus will too, he's got DH writen all over him.

It's crazy how this trade is purely win now but 90% of the discussion is about next year and more. I am looking forward to watching two of the best hitters in baseball for the next three months. It's too bad I will be in DC come September and beyond.

A's kick in 1.5M.

I kinda figured that with the A's getting Morty and Peterson in addition to Wallace, they'd cover it all.

Buster Olney made it sound like that was the only way to make it work on the Cardinals side, so I guess they'll wait til they have money off the books from Glaus, Greene, Kennedy, etc to offer an extension? Or maybe just offer him arbitration? Probably would be about $15M, I think he'd be an idiot to not accept that.

However, you have to remember that Lohse is a Boras client as well, and last year he basically said I'm staying here, get it done. Hopefully Holliday feels the same way.

Cardinals have always done well with this sort of deal. Rolen, Edmonds, Kile, Walker, etc. We never gave up that sort of package that we gave up today, but the players seem to fall in love with the city.

Also, Bernie Miklasz is reporting that John Mozeliak is on his way to Philly, and viewing medical records right now.

Holliday is in New York for the Yankees series, so there's a possibility he'll be able to join the Cardinals in Philadelphia tonight.

Per Rotoworld:

It seems like a very high price to pay for Holliday, an impending free agent who is owed around $6 million for the rest of this season. But, hey, Oakland GM Billy Beane has swindled the Cardinals before and is plenty capable of doing it again.

Yes, but Rolen, Edmonds, Kile, and Walker were all absolute steals, and they worked out well.

I know there's an Oakland connection, but Mulder was damaged goods. I don't think Holliday is.

Rolen, Edmonds, and Kile were all very solid core players. We haven't had much luck with big-name pitchers. Think about it. Carpenter, total risk reward. Pineiro, total risk reward. Waino, a top prospect. Lohse, total risk reward. With position players, we've done well.
