Great news. Spring sensation Casey McGehee has made the team. Now if Brewers would just get rid of Bill Hall.

jsonline.com
Phoenix - Manager Ken Macha just told us that veteran infielder Mike Lamb has been told he won't make the team coming out of spring training.

Instead, the Brewers have decided to keep Casey McGehee, who is having a banner camp.

Macha said there was an 11 a.m. waiver deadline of some sort tomorrow involving Lamb. I'm guessing he'll have the option of taking free agency or reporting to the minors after clearing waivers. The Brewers are paying Lamb only $400,000 this season, with Minnesota picking up the remainder of his $3 million salary.

"There are two avenues he can go," said Macha. "He'll let the club know."

Simply put, McGehee won a spot on the club. He is batting .370 with six home runs and 15 RBI, and has shown the Brewers he can play third base, second and first. He also has caught some in the minors, which makes him an emergency third catcher.

Another factor, according to Macha, is that without McGehee the only right-handed hitter on the bench would be backup catcher Mike Rivera. McGehee, 26, was claimed off waivers from the Cubs' organization over the winter.

"It's a matter of what can this guy do for the team," said Macha. "He can be a third catcher. He's a pretty good defender. He has shown he can hit for power. There's a whole bunch of things that add up to what he brings to the table.

"It's hard to say, 'Have a great spring and make the team,' and have a spring like he has and not make the team."

With that infield spot decided, unless Craig Counsell (torn knee cartilage), the only decisions left to make are the reserve outfield jobs. Chris Duffy, Brad Nelson and Tony Gwynn Jr. are vying for those jobs.

Asked if Duffy and Nelson fit the same bill as McGehee as having great springs and deserving to make the club, Macha said, "I'd probably say that's the case. But they're not on yet."

In other words, with Gwynn out of options, the Brewers are deciding if the want to put him on waivers and risk losing him.

Heck yeah. A good story. Played his way on.

Hope he gets some AB's.....because he's a righty I would think now maybe the platoon is Hall/Counsell.....

Either way I think they must feel a little more confident with Bill Hall and his AB's go up from this decision.

Sorry - I think this is STUPID- there is a reason this guy hasnt stuck in the majors yet. I take the veteran Bat of Lamb every day of the week over a guy who has one "good spring".....

Next thing you know they'll resign Cameron

I know... not happy about that move either

He hasn't stuck in the majors because he hasn't had a chance yet. The Cubs called him up last year and gave him 24AB's (that conist of his ML career so far). Is there a chance his spring was fluke? Sure ,but I think its worth giving him a shot.

This just came out today...

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Craig Counsell has a cartilage tear in his right knee that might require surgery.
Counsell will attempt to play through it, but any setback could put him on the operating table. He's likely to start the season on the disabled list. "It's not the easiest thing to figure out," he said. "They've said all along it's up to me."

Don't think for a second I am going to thank the Cubs for Mcghee- We're just lucky he is keeping the spot warm for a few months until Gamel shows up.... or they bring back Lamb because they realize Counsell/Hall are BAD

Counsell playing third base. I'm watching the game right now. Looks fine....

Cameron hit 25 bombs with 70 batted in while missing the first month and playing in 120 games. All the while playing under a no-risk contract and providing a leadership role.

There's a reason the Yankees keep waffling back-and-forth for Cameron. You could do a ton worse. Oh, did I mention he plays STELLAR defense?

Before you quickly jump to the high strikeout totals, you need to analyze the whole situation. Cameron was not a bad signing at all.

really?
McGehee haters already?
ReeeDonkulous.

Lamb over McGehee would have been the bad call. I think McGehee's done enough to earn his way to a bench spot on a major league club.
What did we have in Lamb? Are any of you brewer fans telling me you LIKE Lamb?
Why?
It's not just one good spring for Casey. Although, it really was a nice spring. People on other boards are rejoicing. I'm confused as to why there's downers around here. Didn't pick up any McGehee cards or something?

Lamb batted .235 last year, somehow banged in 32 whole RBI's.
McGehee batted .296 in AAA, and had 92.
I'm not even a huge stat guy, and the decision looks pretty easy for me.
McGehee is like 7-8 years younger, and looks like a pretty decent player. Lamb was a filler at best. Casey just has a backup roll too, so take it for what it's worth. He's played 3rd, 2nd, SS, 1st, and he can Catch too. You needed a utility guy - here he is. Did his game turn a corner? Maybe, maybe not. Maybe it was a huge spring fluke, but the gamble here is Easy.
Yay McGehee.

bad move by the brewers. One good spring doesnt mean much of anything.

But 8 year's of crappy season's does? Mike Lamb has been "El-Junko" since he was brought into the league in 2000!!! I'd rather have an unproven player with a hot-hand & the "possibility" of good production than a veteran player with a track record that's proven to have poor production! (But that's just me) :D

Gwynn is absolute garbage. And don't worry. We'll take the money next season and try to use it to sign pitching. That's the beauty of a ONE YEAR DEAL.

How can you say Gwynn is Garbage?.... he had 42 AB's last year in 29 games- not exactly a huge sample size.
