I'd be more concerned if he WASN'T breaking bats with 3 Ks

He probably felt like he had to hit something.... since baseballs are eluding him.... and brick wall surely couldnt. WHACK!

He got lucky.... that piece was a inch lower.... he could have been blinded for life.

Concur.

I agree with the posters stating that this isn't a huge issue and, that in some respects, it can be viewed in a positive light. Maybe he should look at other ways to channel his frustration but I like it when someone shows passion and doesn't readily accept failure.

At least this prodigy shows his power at the highest level. Power hitters tend to K a lot (see Stanton)...he has the Ks, so the power will come.

I'm surprised no one has referenced Kerry Wood's little temper tantrum the other night when he pitched his glove and hat into the stands on his way into the dugout.

I think the moral here should not be "don't throw **** when you're frustrated during a game" but more so "don't throw **** that could harm yourself/other people during a game".

When I played, if I had a bad inning, I'd come back to the dugout and hit the fence or punch my glove a couple of times. And I can tell you that it wasn't because I saw some MLB player do it. It was because that is how I reacted to it. That's expected. Maybe the breaking of the bat was just too dramatic?

All of that aside, had the piece of the bat not cut him, 99% of people would never have even known about this.

Actually they posted the story on Fark.com, ya know the website dedicated to non-News stories, so let's say 95%

would have been cool if a piece of wood had shot into his eyeball
and it popped and eye fluid went everywhere and he was blinded in that eye
and never was able to hit again. that would have been super cool

His cards have exploded - the inside word is that the wood hit him in the eye infact but his eye is made of steel..they have kept this quiet.... ;)

I embrace his fire. These kids need to stop getting those participation trophies and stop with the "we're here to have fun" mentality. You don't succeed by sitting down on the bench and saying "aw shucks". You succeed by letting passion run through your veins, sometimes so much so that you chuck a bat at a wall. Bryce is a great role model for those who want to achieve more than just showing up for the day.

Let's be honest; who here hasn't chucked their phone, gaming controller, or tools out of frustration? It would be different if he spit on the umpire or flipped the bird to the pitcher. I'm actually okay with him letting out frustration by cucking a bat.

I cant agree more. I love the fire. To many players lost it, and mail it in every night.

I coach 7-8 year olds. Last game I was so disappointed becaue I had a handful of kids ask me "coach can I sit on the bench?" In all my years of coaching I never had so many kids happy to sit on th bench, (drink, Gatoraid, and talk). I told them if they did not want to play ball, tell their moms to keep them home, I want boys that want to play every inning of every game. Unfortunately some are just looking for a place to "hang out" and not really play ball.

Well seems like everyone is ok with it and I'm standing by myself. I don't think this has anything to do with participation trophies? Idk what tangent you are going off on but ok. And as for this happening every game I don't think I have every seen a player smash a bat of a wall? Yes they throw gloves or tip over Gatorade coolers but that was a bit much. But o well sorry for posting the thread just thought it was extremely immature and a bad way to handle the situation. I've played baseball all throughout high school and one year of college and if you strike out you deal with it like a man, not like a little boy.

Do you watch more than one game a year?

Good god, get over it. He's 19 years old. Additionally, if anybody is really looking up to these players as role models (aside from their playing style), then they've probably got bigger issues than if their "role model" is hitting a bat against a wall.

From personal experience.....Major League Baseball players smash more bats......and helmets...and water coolers and light bulbs in runways more than anyone would ever know. I, for one got hit with a flying batting helmet thrown by Larry Bowa that would have smashed against the wall if not for me blocking it.

Yea do you remember the big NFL lineman who got hit in the eye with the refs flag after an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty? I think he went blind in that eye and never played again.

Yeah, that was Orlando "Zeus" Brown. He actually did play again but missed 3 seasons because of that injury. He died last year due to complications from diabetes (which would have been easily preventable but he didn't know he had diabetes).

With Amare punching a wall and taking alot of heat injuring himself recently why not criticize the kid for giving himself stitches. I believe when Kevin Brown broke his hand people had a field day in a thread. White gloves with Harper though. I loved Paul Oneill fire but when players start injuring themselves criticism is warranted.

That's because money is involved.

I'm sure it will be on sports center all day. And it might rub off on some kids who knows? Some kid could throw his bat at his little league game tomorrow and say well it's ok Bryce Harper did it...Im just going to stop posting now since its pointless. I guess no one on here gets what I'm saying. No one understands baseball etiquette anymore you just don't do these kind of things when you're a role model for so many. That's the frustrating part. But no one here seems to get that.

That should have been the thought process a moment before you hit the "New Thred" button...
