Bryce Harper being a role model

With Amare punching a wall and taking alot of heat injuring himself recently why not criticize the kid for giving himself stitches. I believe when Kevin Brown broke his hand people had a field day in a thread. White gloves with Harper though. I loved Paul Oneill fire but when players start injuring themselves criticism is warranted.

Or it could be that Amare and Brown injured their hands which are absolutely necessary to play their respective sports and thus kept them out for an extended period of time whereas Harper got pissed and ended up with a cut on his face, which in the end is not going to keep him out of the game for an extended period of time, if at all. Add into it that Amare did his during the playoffs and Brown was closer to the end of the season and the timing for them was awful.

Injured hands are far from being equal to a cut on the face. Was it dumb? Absolutely but I'm sure we've all been in the "heat of the moment" at some time or another and thus SHOULD understand to some extent.

Yeah, that was Orlando "Zeus" Brown. He actually did play again but missed 3 seasons because of that injury. He died last year due to complications from diabetes (which would have been easily preventable but he didn't know he had diabetes).

To the OP, don't you know not to knock the golden child on these boards? Harper can do no wrong on this board.
Too bad it wasn't a little more serious, may have taught him to quit being such a little brat. I know other athletes act like like children too, and they are not right either. In regards to athletes being role models, if your kid looks up to bratty 19 year old kid, you may have more problems than you think.

Did you actually see him do it? No, you didn't. He did it in the tunnel, where every professional athlete blows off steam. He just happenend to wear a scar afterward. But he actually did it the right way - in the tunnel - rather than punching a gatorade cooler.

Should he have done it? No. Does he regret it? I'm sure. But get off your tired high horse about role models and 'think of the children' blather. It's such an easy target but it's really, truly, meaningless. At some point, we can't blame everything role models on TV and in sports. Sure, my kids pay attention to sports and movies and stuff, but my wife, myself and my immediate family are much more impactful on their lives.

Well seems like everyone is ok with it and I'm standing by myself. I don't think this has anything to do with participation trophies? Idk what tangent you are going off on but ok. And as for this happening every game I don't think I have every seen a player smash a bat of a wall? Yes they throw gloves or tip over Gatorade coolers but that was a bit much. But o well sorry for posting the thread just thought it was extremely immature and a bad way to handle the situation. I've played baseball all throughout high school and one year of college and if you strike out you deal with it like a man, not like a little boy.


And Jaypers if it was any other person I still would have posted a thread. I have nothing against Harper except for the fact that he is immature and comes across like I'm too good for you when he has proven nothing. It's great that everyone is on his nutsack but I don't think he will turn out to be anything amazing.

I've sold all but one of his cards I had stashed and will still be a d-rider, becasue the kid has game.
He's getting alot of fans for doing what he's doing.

At the very least, I would expect a little criticism for the unnecessary risk of injury.

Sure, he went 0-5 - but the little temper tantrum could have led to worse things (like missing games).

So, this is a big deal because of the result? It's a fluke, as this type of action happens countless times throughout the season, many we don't see or hear about, but because something negative actually resulted, it's a big deal? This is like the sudden concern about pitchers shagging fly balls pregame. Also, why is this on Harper's head? You talk about impressionable youths, well the guy you're attacking is a teenager! Also, why aren't you attacking the players and culture that maybe "influenced" Harper? He's the youngest player in the league, seems odd to single him out for something that's been going on forever because of a fluke.

Yeah there would never have been any talk about this had he not got hurt doing it.

Harper wants to get a hit everytime he is up to bat. He didn't and got frustrated, just like every other MLB player. I don't see it as a big deal at all. Kid is pressing, there is a ridiculous amount of pressure and expectations for him to live up to. He will have his ups and downs. Gotta respect his competition, he wants to be the best. He's only 19 so he still has a lot to learn, but I am impressed on how well he has played this early in his career.

True scotty - harper does want to get a hit everytime he is up to bat - very few players have so much passion that they want to get a hit every at bat - harpers stats havent been amazing but The fact that he wants to get a hit every at bat in itself is heart warming

Give the kid a break. I own zero cards of harper. I love the kids game and potential. He handled cole cowards crap with class. Not everyone has personality, it's a gift, he will figure it out over time. Scouts have put a lot of pressure on him and he gets to try to live up to it. Josh Hamilton failed under the pressure, as have many other next all time greats. If he is as good as they say, we get to watch one of the best ever. Sit back and enjoy it. If he fails, to me any ways, only a sad person would enjoy watching that. I'm not accusing you of this, just a statement. People who sit back and hope for people to fail, are worse than a young kid, who has a billion dollar talent, being cocky and acting his age. I'm glad he got pissed about having a bad day. I'd be more worried about him, if he was fine with it. He had a bad game and may have helped injure a player, during a celebration. I'm sure both were on his mind and had him fired up.

Throwing stuff happens at every level of baseball. It is obvious to me that the OP has never played at any competitive level. Probably played rec ball at one point or in a church league. I did it not even 2 weeks ago and my team mates do it every now and then. Sometimes it can get a team fired up especially "Waking Up" the bats which involes kicking them all in one swoop making alot of noise and it pisses people off when you kick their $250+ bats. I was once hit with a helmet that came flying into the dugout laughed it off because I knew he was struggling. It is nice to see fire at appropriate times. I dont like it when it is negitive towards teammates however if you are slaming a glove because a shortstop did'nt make a play that is not ok, let that player handle that and pick him up.
