per Flyers GM Paul Holmgren: “We didn’t make this trade to acquire his rights just to hang around, we’re going to try our best to get him signed.”

:o This will solve the goaltending problem if they can get him signed.

But it totally pucks my Bob collection.
i think he is a stop gap for 3-5 years while bob develops into the elite starter. i see a 50-32 game split kind of like when montreal had roy and hayward

Think of it as a great move for Bob actually. What better to tandem with than a fellow countryman who can help him adapt to the league, language and general culture better? He should be good for Bob's development actually.

I didn't think of it that way. Thanks :)

Bobs will be fine. He proved himself this year. He'll still get lots of chances to play.

who will the Flyers trade to fit Bryzgalov under the Cap?

Bryzgalov wants to be paid as a top player...not just a top goalie. Demands too rich for Yotes.

Here's what I'm thinking:

Guys I think are on the way out
Carcillo (1.075 mil) RFA
Zherdev (2 mil) UFA
Boucher (975,000) UFA
Leighton (1.550 mil) will go back to the Phantoms
Laperierre (1.16 mil) LTIR so there's a break I believe
And probably either Nodl or Powe (both RFAs, 850k and 725k respectively) will go

The problem with a trade is that most of the high price players have NTCs. I wouldn't mind seeing Hartnell (4.2 mil), Carle (3.437 mil), or Coburn (3.2 mil) go. But at those prices, I don't see it happening. As much as I hated on Richards after the loss to Boston, I know he's not going anywhere. Versteeg, I could live with or without. But if you let Zherdev go (which will probably happen), you almost have to keep him.

I heard that comment from Dreger as well. He was on the local radio show this morning and he qualified that with a statement that this may have been directed somewhat exclusively at Phoenix though. He said there may have been some hard feelings between Ilya and the Coyotes management group and that this was said not only to try to set the market for his services but to ensure Phoenix did not keep him in their plans.

I think alot of it depends on the cap situation and how much it elevates. We know Zherdev and Boucher won't be back. Word is that the Flyers have ceased any negotiating with Leino over what they feel is unrelaistic demands by him, so he will likely walk. O'Donnell won't return I am sure. They'll need to re-sign 2 of the following to field a full roster: Carcillo, Powe or Nodl. I'll bet on Powe and Nodl. The only salary opening would depend on the cap increase then. Rumours place it increasing about 3-4 million, likely not enough to get Bryzgalov done unless they end load a deal to pay him a ton but spread out the cap hit.

The player I am hearing alot of buzz around is Carter. He is highly marketable with a new long term, relatively affordable contract. If they don't move him this year his NMC kicks in for years 2-4. Versteeg is another possibility being talked about with only 1 year at $3M remaining. Move him for a cheap roster forward or prospect and force a guy like Rinaldo into the full time lineup or add Carcillo to the re-sign list and you have enough to sign Bryzgalov. Carter would of course fetch likely a cheaper roster return and a high draft pick if not more. I really hate trading to free up cap space though. 9 times out of 10 the team getting the better player wins the deal hands down. Having to do that speaks of mismanagement to me. For the Flyers the cupboards are bare right now. We've traded away all of our draft picks, there are really no prospects in the system of value that are not current roster players. We have a small window of opportunity to win until guys like Pronger and Timonen are not viable anymore.

Wellwood showed some promise this season while Briere was sitting his suspension and I liked Laliberte's work in the 09-10 season, but he's a FA coming up and would have to be resigned. Rinaldo is another viable option.

Trading Carter would let a lot of steam out of this team. He's come around as a consistent 30 goal scorer (46, 33, and 36 the last 3 years) and he's strong on the power play.

that makes a lot more sense that it was directed at not wanting to resign with Phoenix.

I am curious to see how the Flyers handle this because I definitely think Bryzgalov is an excellent goalie and could help Bobrovsky develop into a great goalie. at the same time I know the Flyers like most other elite teams are up against the Cap and a huge signing like this is going to be difficult to complete but can be done.

Looks like they traded Jeff Carter AND Mike Ricahrds. Did....not....see....this....coming....

Sheesh. I'm just getting back into hockey so I have no clue who this goalie is (where does he rank amongst all goalies in the league?). I just can't believe they traded Richards....

Word on the street is that once Richards heard that Carter was traded, he asked to be traded as well. Another word is that LA had taken a shot to get Carter, but couldn't match what Columbus offered. When Richards became available, a call was made to LA and the deal was made shortly after.

With the Carter trade, there was enough cap room to sign Bryzgalov for the $7mil he originally wanted. But, he wanted an even longer contract than 7 years and said he would take less if the Flyers would give him a 9 year. This is why the $51mil never changed from the original rumor. So they stretch out the contract, save a little more cap room, and now they can negotiate with Leino who is said to want $4mil a year on a new deal (he's an RFA). The Richards trade almost evened out with a little more room going to the Flyers (around $1mil), plus the 2nd rd pick didn't hurt to help build up the farm system since they traded or released a couple prospects.

Bryzgalov is easily a top 10 goalie in the league right now.
