What was the history on the $600 bid? Ton of cash for a raw copy.

Wow, can't believe there's another GSU Alum on here! I've lived in Savannah for about 2 years now and absolutely love it. There's a great card shop down in Jacksonville (Jacksonville Sports Cards) that I try to frequent two or three times a year. Other than that there really isn't a local shop to go to.

Here's what I got in the mail today. I try to stick to on-card autos and this one is a beaut.

Hey guys, I'm new to this forum, but I've been collecting Ripken for about 10 years. It's interesting to see your earlier posts in this thread of cards I remember seeing/bidding on eBay. I don't do much higher end stuff, though I have a couple. I look forward to (hopefully) contributing to this thread occasionally. I'll can't wait for the show in Atlanta this weekend!

Posted this in the 90's thread, but figured I'd post here too, a few recent pickups:

So what'd you guys think of the end price on that 1993 Finest Refractor?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... K:MEWAX:IT

I was the #2 guy, didn't go any higher because A) I was worried I was a new guy overpaying and B) I don't mind holding out for a PSA10. I read there's around 21 confirmed PSA 10s, so one has to turn up eventually. As an aside, how do you determine exactly how many copies exist for a card at a certain grade level?

Pretty good price IMHO. The Finest Refractors are all over the place in regards to price. I picked up my PSA 9 for under $300.

Yeah that's what I'm more curious about. Are they overall in a downtrend or uptrend during your time in the card scene? I'm just trying to get a sense of urgency here... if a PSA9 used to go for $500 and now sold at $250, I can be patient. If they were selling for $200 last year, maybe I should get one sooner than later. Just curious....

I will have to defer to others. All I know is that one month you will see one sell for under $300 then see one clear $400. Not sure of the method to the madness but I would guess the higher PSA 9 sales could be Cards with good centering in hopes of a 10 on the reslab.

Wow, people actually do that? Doesn't that hurt the credibility of PSA? I figured most grading would be consistent at least, and 10s would only be perfection. If this has a decent probability of working, I'd take a whole new view on PSA 9s with good centering...

Yes, people do it all the time. It's called reslabbing or sub-bumping. You have to take that into consideration when looking at population reports. If a card has been graded 100 times that number does not reflect the number of times a card was graded and broken from the slab and resubbed. Going a step further I believe that on submission forms you can even put a minimum grade requirement. That means that when I submit a card I can request that it it is not at least an 8 that I do not want it slabbed. I believe you pay the same either way but could be wrong. So long story short, folks are willing to pay a premium for strong grades in hopes of getting a bump, especially PSA set registry guys now that PSA does the .5 grade up to 9.

I've also never shared this before but I got it at Jamie Moyers' "Moyer Foundation" banquet a few years ago. I had done a philanthropy event where we raised money for the foundation and we were invited to their annual banquet, where Cal Ripken was being honored. The centerpiece of each table was below, which you would receive via donation/auction style with your table. I believe the minimum you could get it for was a donation somewhere between $100-$150, but I don't quite remember. And thankfully no one at my table wanted it that much so I think I got it for the minimum. Definitely "overpaid" but it was for charity so I didn't mind.

The Moyer Foundation is great. A great addition for a great cause.

Grabbed a 1981 WTF checklist tonight for $31. I plan to get it signed by Cal to match the signed 1981 WTF. I also grabbed the Schneider and Bonner copies. I would love having them signed to create a pre-Topps rookie signed so to speak. With a big celebration for the 30th anniversary of the longest day coming I especially like the buys.

Sick Cards!

But is that a Jason Bay auto on the Flair 1/1 auto laundry tag?

Yep, it is. Tried to take it back to Fleer/Flair back in 2005, and it told me that it can't do anything with this card, so I decided why not - I will keep this ridiculous error 1/1 card...
