Can water damage REALLY do this to an auto?

Yeah, if he's describing tape/plastic turning black, it definitely got cooked. I'm not exactly sure how it happens, but i've seen it before.

try putting a top loader without a card in it the way it was sent and put it on your dashboard for a few days

If I remember correctly, the post office says a bubble mailer should be 3/4 inch thick in order to do a dc on it. I could be mistaken, but i remeber getting cards with packing peanuts in the envelope to make it thicker. Is that to ensure it doesnt go thru any machines and get cooked or damaged?

Yes.
Also those packing peanuts or crinkled up paper allows for the 3/4" thickness to be met to ALLOW for the bubble mailer to be sent with DC.

Sorry. But I have to stick up for the buyer on this. In no way was he trying to scam Markakis. The card sold for $8.50 dlvd. The buyer has 100% feedback and looking at his recent feedback he has been buying Chrome USA Autos. Why on Earth would he damage a $8.50 card so he could get a refund? Makes no sense.

Why are people calling him a ****** and blocking him from bidding on your auctions?

The PO processes millions of items on a daily basis and Im sure a few fall through the cracks and get damaged in transit or get sorted wrong and mailers go through the sorting machines. Or even worse.... a PO employee knows that bubble mailers usually contain sportscards and as a joke between 2-3 guys they stick one in a microwave and "cook" the card. The mailer probably shows no signs of it but the card clearly does. So the buyer isnt at fault and the seller isnt either. But unfortunately the seller loses out because he offers a refund to the buyer.

Personally I blocked him for his response to the OP, and his demeanor.
He was the one throwing blame.

It was an easy block for me. So yeah, ****** canoe to him for thinking that markakis would intentionally send the card like that to the buyer.
He wasn't very understanding or reasonable.

Really? Come on man. That's some pretty wild...

Russ...I understand why you would block the guy based on his response. But you have to remember, if you are buying things, especially with a purpose in mind, something like this not only sets you back, it pisses you off.

Put it like this...I never sell anything. So if I get a card in and it's damaged, now I've lost money and time, plus it's a pain in the ass. And, whatever goal I was working towards has now been stopped. You might not feel it's a big deal, and I would agree it's not worth being mega rude over, but I'm not going to be happy about it. Now I have to go to walmart or the PO, buy a bubble mailer, and then send it off. This is going to cost me money and time. Especially at the post office where they work at a snail's pace. You might even say I could do it quicker by printing a shipping label at home. But not everyone does that or knows how. Plus, I still have to go get a mailer. Bottom line is, any time I get something in damaged(especially since I buy a lot of lower end items) I'm SOL. You can tell me to return it for a refund, and I know honestly, as a seller, that is the only way you personally have to rectify the situation. But when I hear "you can return it for a refund" all I really hear is "Hey you just lost 5 bucks and 30 minutes of time." Plus you need to go re-buy the card.

I'm not going to jump the seller's butt. But I do know to return something that low dollar is going to be more trouble than it is worth. That is what would irk me.

Idiot buyer? Maybe he just over-reacted. Or he was having a bad day. We all have had them and im sure we have all said and done things we wish we could take back. This could be one of those times for him.

If you want to block me.... feel free. I have 2 names.... Ferg1945 and P_Manning 18

He said the package was clean but the card was F'd up. How do you explain that? If it got caught in a sorter the mailer would have been messed up. The card looks "cooked". We have read horror stories about PO employees stealing things and Im sure many employees know sports cards in mailers. Im pretty sure every PO sorter isnt the best. I cant put it past someone trying to be funny with a couple guys and doing something like that. If you feel the urge to block me as well... my ebay names are right above this.

I microwaved a chrome card that I wrote on with Lumocolor.

It sparked once and the foil appeared cracked below the plastic top layer. Put it in for 30 more seconds and the plastic surface melted.

The ink didn't change color.

Dude...I don't even sell on ebay or anywhere else for that matter so don't worry about me blocking you. Nor would I for comments. People blocking others because of their opinions is...well...hey, it's their loss. They may not care but a good business man never cuts off a possible income source.

And yes, while I do agree that this could have happened, I so seriously doubt that it did. I know here in Texas, we get really hot summers and any time I get an auto in the mail, I worry about it being out in the mailbox all day long. Most mailboxes are either black or brown(at least now that I think about it) and mine is no different. Combine that with the materials they are usually made from(tin around here), and add in 100 degree heat, and also combine in the possibilities that there may be holes in them due to corrosion and rot, and then add in the fact that there may have been water in the mailbox, or hell, even take into account that the package itself could have been in an air-conditioned environment all day until delivered, you have a wide variety of possible causes. I've seen heat do weird things to stuff.

I have a Lance Berkman auto I got on a photo . I have a Hunter Pence right next to it. Both are hung on the wall. Same height, same frame, same marker used, everything. One day while hanging up some football stuff I was given for Christmas, I noticed the Berkman looked all wilted. I slowly took it down and pulled the frame apart to get a closer look. The damn thing looked like it had been out in the rain and then air dried. The auto was still there but not as bold as before. So I take the Pence down and nada. No change, no problems, everything as crisp as the day I first got it. Both were obtained within a short time of each other. No problems with the frames being damaged either. Now granted the temperature in my home fluctuates. But not to a great degree.

Honestly, my opinion: this card was in a nice cool environment until delivered, and then stuck in a hot ass mailbox all day long. Allowing the card inside to condensate and cook. I'll bet my bottom dollar that the bubble mailer, upon close inspection, would show small signs of condensation too. Which if it wasn't literally sitting in a puddle of water, would not show up very readily. I can totally see the penny sleeve and toploader helping this happen to the card too since it would trap any condensation inside with the card and allow it to cook in it's own condensate. And if you think I'm full of it, wait until it's afternoon, hot, and take a chrome card that has been sitting inside all day and stick it in a bubble mailer and try this. I've gotten cards that were chrome or foil before in the mail and as soon as I brought them inside, you could literally see your fingerprints on the toploader or card that was inside should you take it out.

Which leads me to think it was a heat/moisture issue rather than a straight heat issue or a sitting in a puddle of water issue.
