Uhm, I posted a number of comments against this story, not derailing it.

As someone who spent $275 to defend YOUR position, is it really necessary to insult me for my thoughts and beliefs? Is it necessary to lash out with personal attacks?

I'm sorry. I was having a bad day and ended up taking it out on a good guy.

One thing im afraid of is that theres going to be some unscrupulous people that will use this news story
as evidence to buy nice collections for a fraction of what they would be worth .

There are stupid/ignorant/oblivious people in every facet of life. If anyone is willing to make a financial/collecting decision based on this poorly conceived fluff piece, I have no sympathy for them.

This is a tough call, are these people really unscrupulous if many other people also thought the whole thing was going in the tank? Ironically its usually the people in the hobby who are unscrupulous saying something is 'extra valuable' for whatever reason trying to rip off those who don't know better.

Everyone tries for an advantage.

Dumb shop owners near Berkeley who think that people won't know what a baseball card is in 20 years are part of the problem.

I think the hobby has only itself to blame.

Lol, they (the people making the subject Fox and pretending there's nothing wrong with the industry.) are programmed that way. Feel sorry for them.

2. Other "companies" are going out of business? Fleer went bankrupt years ago. UD and Donruss/Panini are still viable competitors. Pacific barely counts, and Pinnacle was sold (wasn't it?)

3. It indicates that UD is Topps' only competitor, completely ignoring Donruss.

4. The tagline indicates that the Internet is driving the companies to go bankrupt. Without the internet -- ebay, boards like this -- most people wouldn't collect. The internet is, frankly, keeping the hobby alive, in so many ways.

Crap journalism. Crap story. Crap network. Crap.

Agree on everything except for your assessment of Fox News.

Point out the poorly reserached parts and who gives the information.

I'm a television news producer and I've seen some very poorly researched stories in this business.
That story was one of the worst, and it's an example of what gives the journalism profession a bad reputation.

I think when people start looking to profit off cards then the hobby slowly dies. A hobby is just that, a hobby. Being a player collector I've noticed that there are few people who view this as a hobby but more of a business. I understand that mentality but I think in the long run it turns collectors into 'investors'; IE: Prospecting. I would imagine I'm one of a handful who have never tried to prospect or buy now and sell later; It's a hobby and I buy what I like, not what will make me a few bucks a few weeks down the road. It's no longer a hobby for most, but a small business, weather they view it that way or not.

In short, I think Prospecting+Greed along with the internet, is killing the hobby.

I know what you're saying and mostly agree. But don't forget that most of the people here were always on the business end of things to begin with (current or ex-shop owners, make their income on cards already, etc) so this board is a little "skewed" in that respect. But the hobby certainly needs some people on the business end of things, just not too many people...

I think what's hurting the hobby is that not nearly enough people are buying and keeping what they want. Some of these people don't even know what they want to begin with and are more interested in gambling of some sort. Some people can't help but to compulsively buy and even stopped liking what they're buying.

People need to remember about the simple joys of collecting, but the hobby is too complicated for some to figure out.

Yeah...I keep most of what I buy.If I don't want it I trade it for more.I never really sell anything. But with the way people collect these days...its like they buy things to trade. That, to me, is pretty weird.Just keep that money and save it towards what you really need or want.Sooner or later your going to see something you need or want and all your going to have is a bunch of trade bait and no money.

Why is there a problem with someone making a profit? The card companies don't make the cards and give them away as gifts or look to lose money.

When just about everyone is doing it...its no longer a hobby but an investment. That's all my point was.I am just not and never have been one of those types of collectors who spend money to make money.I spend money to enjoy what I purchased. Can't speak for everyone else.

To what extent are you in the hobby to make a profit? The card companies are supposed to make profit...but notice they're not rich like Microsoft or anything...

As above its just that there are too many people in it for profit. For too many its what they think about first.

Rich like Microsoft? Comparison of profits? How about comparison of market or products? So who is supposed to make a profit? I need that list.

I'm only in it anymore for money and a possible return. In my opinion, that's fun. I'm just after guys that I see upside in purchasing their cards. I got into Duffy at a point I could buy fairly cheap and get a good quantity. If he craps out, it's not a huge loss but the upside is there to make some money.

We already know this about you. And yes, at the risk of sounding politically incorrect, we're saying that there are too many people like you in the hobby. But its OK and perhaps even preferable to have some folks who like money and not cards, but there needs to be a balance between collectors and investors.

There are too many people who don't care where the hobby is headed, and aren't really interested in a collecting/investing balance that sustains the hobby. So let me know what kind of stuff you're buying and I'll continue to stay away from it :)

It stops being a hobby when hundreds and thousands of dollars are involved.

I guess the difference is that I don't really care who is or isn't in the "hobby" or what they do with their money.
