In 1990, I saved my lunch money for a couple of weeks and dropped $30 to buy a 1987 Fleer Will Clark.

They go for 18 cents over on sportlots these days. :(

I can't tell if you're a troll or just a *******

Seriously...Strasburg?

Thats the best you could come up with?

He trolls every thread like this and says Strasburg...

He's just another 12 year old kid that trys to act like he knows what he is talking about by throwing out a name...

It seems like it's in vogue to jump on BiggioBrooks755 whenever he posts, calling him ignorant etc. If we actually looked at current prices on Strasburg and recalled historical pricing his cards fit perfectly. Back when he was in the Minor his cards were as hot as anyone's. His 2010 Bowman Chrome Gold Refractor Autograph was around $1000 I recall, and it may have been higher (and other cards were even hotter). Now that same gold refractor can be had for roughly $300 despite the fact that Strasburg is still really young and still has ace potential.

Honestly it takes far less intelligence or hobby knowledge to rehash the big names of yesteryear who are now nobodies without providing any historical information about prices or about what was going on at that time in the hobby than it takes to identify someone who fits, but is not immediately obvious. (It takes even less intelligence and hobby knowledge to ignore the content of a post and just hurl insults based on a perception of the author.) Strasburg is a great example of a player whose card values are not what they used to be despite his age and potential.

To your first point, if he didnt post dumb crap all the time, people wouldn't think he's a *******.

Second, you're talking about an active player who has been in the bigs about 3 years and it's barely the beginning of spring training; the time when card prices start to increase. Plenty of time to see those prices rise back up.

He could have come up with at least ten different players who would fit the bill for this conversation: Delmon, Lastings Milledge, Dallas McPherson, Rickie Weeks, etc.

But no, he decides to be edgy and tosses out Strasburg's name.

I recall back when 1991 Score came out everyone wanted the Jose Canseco Dream Team card. You know the one... a shirtless Jose on a beach swinging a bat barefoot in his jeans?

At the time the 1990 Score Bo Jackson football/baseball card was still popluar and people thought the Dream Team cards would be money in the bank. I can't remember what prices it was going for, but it drove sales of series 2 because everyone wanted the Dream Team cards.

In 07 I got a joba xfractor auto from one pack. Card had a beat corner.

Listed it fully disclosed and got over $200 for it, bad corner and all.

Worthless card in that shape today.

That Nomo got me thinking about the Grant Hill Finest RC refractor. i pulled that card and got rid of it (reluctantly) when it was in the $150-200 range or so. I'm sure they are still in demand to certain collectors, but this was right before the finest and chrome rookie crops would create ever larger buzz (Duncan, Bryant, Carter, etc).

Well, maybe they are still strong sellers. Here is the cheapest one on ebay now. Lots of offers, but nobody willing to pull the trigger at $150.

One of the few cards I sold at the right time was the Lastings Milledge auto BC. I got $86 the week he was first called up.

Probably about .86 CENTS now...

Speaking of lastings, his 2004 topps chrome was an absolute B to find graded with a 10 auto since he always went off card.

I had one with a 10 auto and got crazy money for it.

And it perfectly fit the OP. You just don't like him.

YES!

Though I convinced my mom to buy in at $25. When it reached $30 in Beckett I looked like a genius :)
Still one of my favorite cards of all time

1990 Score Ryne Sandberg Highlight error. Listed his position on front as "3B." Those were $30-40 (or more!) easy for about 7-8 months. You could tell which boxes could have had that card (and not the corrected version) by the serial number on the inside of the lid of the box. I had 4-5 at one point, but now just one.

Nice story.Where did you meet him?I bought some boxes years ago just for the thrill of pulling that card.

At the Houston Sports 610 am fanfest they have here yearly. Got to meet many great athletes over the years at this event. Last year they had Tiki Barber, Earl Campbell, Rudy Tomjanovich, Johny Hendricks, Drew Pearson, and a few others I can't recall. The year before they had Warren Moon, Robert Horry, Mario Ellie, and a few others. It's free and a pretty cool way to waste a Saturday. I'm not sure how they pulled Canseco in but I was more than happy they did.

Billy Ripken "Rick Face" - this card when it came out was $100+, it's still popular today, but no where near $100

99% of all hot rookie cards, especially of prospects, were once worth much more than they are now.
Even most Hall of Famers' rookie cards from the '60s through '80s are worth considerably less now.

I'm looking at an April 1993 Beckett, and here are some examples of the astronomical prices of some of the more popular Hall of Famers rookie cards from 21 years ago.

1965 Steve Carlton $575
1968 Nolan Ryan $1,650
1969 Reggie Jackson $750
1973 Mike Schmidt $500
1974 Dave Winfield $165
1975 George Brett $225
1975 Robin Yount $225
1980 Rickey Henderson $150

This is raw, not graded, of course, and whatever a dealer wanted to call Near Mint condition, which could be as low as excellent condition to the untrained eye back then.

Even now, as more and more of those vintage HOF rookies get graded, the prices will go down as supply increases.

eBay is already saturated with dozens of new graded rookies of every player, and you can buy beautiful PSA 8 rookies for far less of what they were worth raw in lesser condition 20 years ago.
There is just too much supply out there, and demand lowers each year with collectors leaving the hobby.

But pre internet even with a higher demand, it was tougher to locate the higher than realized supply. So there were all those supposedly several hundred dollars valued cards that were, and are still, sitting in display cases because no one will pay what someone at Beckett alleges they're worth, scarcity or not.

There were so many more collectors 20 years ago. And having an HOF RC was, like, THE THING. I remember when a player was newly "discovered" to be on track to make the Hall, it made their cards go crazy when articles would come out in the half-dozen magazines we had covering the hobby. Brett, Yount, Fisk, Blyleven (that took a while), Winfield, etc. I remember one investment article that recommended people buy Blyleven's 1972 card rather than his 1971 because it was currently selling for about 20% of the 1971, and 2nd year HOFers normally go for 33%, so that was an easy profit on the adjustment. That guy went deep.

the 89 UD High Series had alot of hot cards in it with Zeile, Walton, Dwight Smith, Jim Abbott, and now you can buy the set for a dollar or 2$. When TSC released the Bagwell and Big Hurt and Knoblauch were easy 20$ cards and if I remember right even Luis Gonzalez was a 10$ card
