Cole Gillespie and Roque Mercedes are the two players traded for Lopez.

Nice. I was hoping we wouldn't simply let Gillespie waste away.

Do they need infield help??

They currently have Craig Counsel playing 2B. I would think this is a pretty good pickup.[/quote:zvfygww3]
yeah it is if Casey's knee is not 100%, then yeah I would say nice pick-up

Counsell is good, and actaully playing well above where he was expected to play; but they are running that old dog into the ground :) He was just a stress injury away from hurting the Brewers infeild options in a big way.

I guess this means that, if the Brewers want a big FA pitcher, they'll have to move a MLB guy or two in the deal, assuming they go after someone who has a decent salary. $3.5 taps into the "spending spree" fund a tad.

Well, Cole, it's been fun :)

dunno anything about these guys (at least i have heard of Gillespie), but hopefully one of them turns out to help a bit. Not sure why we need another outfielder though? Hopefully Byrnes is on his way out (one can wish).

Re: Brewers Trade For Felipe Lopez

I can dig it.
Lopez is pretty awesome, and many dbacks fans would consider him a team favorite. He's entering his prime, and given a chance to be a regular starter on the Brewers (which may or may not be the case), I see great things.
Gillespie is your average OF prospect with brief glimpses of above average-ness, and Mercedes (although he hasn't started this year) could still be a starter, and if not, a decent bullpen guy - which is always nice to have.
Either way, he's a good pitcher who should be fun to keep an eye on for dback prospectors.

I'd imagine Lopez is our new lead-off guy. I'd also imagine there's going to be another move by the Brewers pretty soon.

If Byrnes is on his way out, it could be a Byrnes for Lugo deal in which each team picks up the sunken cost contract. This was discussed in depth on the Sox pregame, and this morning in the Boston Globe.

Tough to see Cole go since he was one of my favorites but this was a good move for the Crew. I hope he does well in Arizona.

If Mercedes turns out to be a decent bullpen arm at best, I would be ecstatic. Felipe was only oing to be here for a year anyway, and lord knows the bullpen needs major help.

I would be thrilled with a Lugo-Byrnes swap, but somehow I don't see that happening with Byrnes being injured now.

If that doesn't happen, I would be interested in seeing Reynolds moved to 2B, Miguel Montero being moved to 3B (played here in Winter League this year), and Snyder still being the catcher. I like both Montero and Snyder and don't really want to give up either,, so the Reynolds to 2B move could work.

I could also live with seeing what Rusty Ryal could do up here in the majors.

A lot of ways to go with this team. Still more deals to come I'm sure, and who knows what happens with Webb.
