COMC is seeking folks who are willing to, on occasion, be contacted for their expertise. Whether it be oddball football cards from the 1950s, over-sized basketball cards, hard-to-find pre-WWII baseball cards, or especially non-sport cards, you likely have a niche we don’t.

If so, and you don’t mind being bothered from time to time, contact us with your user name and specific area of expertise and we’ll get in touch with you.

I agree its a good site but who is gonna work for free these days answering all kinds of questions about oddball cards? Im surprized they aren't offering some incentive like free shipping or a $10 gift card or something for people that help them make more money for the owner.

Occasionally they send a scan and say hey, what card is this.

You reply if you know the answer and ignore it if you don't.

your taking time out of your day though to help out something you have no affiliation with.. so technically your working for them non profit donating your time even if its just a minute or two. Is this to help them branch out to include more listings of cards not Beckett checklisted and thus bring more revenue to their site?

Or you are sharing your hobby knowledge to help others, like people do every day on message boards.

Do you think someone has never made money off a message board post that someone put up without compensation?

Its not about that. If they contacted you once or twice, that would be different. But the way they seem to be going about it as if they outsourcing their research team to save on overhead. It's not like they are a charity organization. I've been contacted plenty of times about unreleased cards, but it is usually a one time thing.

Ha, this was my first thought when I saw that reactions from the board. I'd love to volunteer, except my 'expertise' is early 90s junk wax. I think they've got that covered.

I already message them when there are incorrect listings. I'll keep doing that. I'm an expert of none, conversationally fluent in a lot.

if they are taking all your free help and turning it into a profit for themselves.. why shouldn't you expect some sort of compensation? I'd share my knowledge here freely because its not a business and we are all for common goal.. but there they are taking what your giving them to help them make a profit..totally different story.

I'll have to rant a little myself and say I would not be willing to help them. They ignore most my messages and have never thanked me for correcting any of their listings. It took about three months for me to get a refund for a trimmed card from them because they ignored my emails. I called them and they told me to send back the card and after shipping back, they ignored my note explaining why it is trimmed and directions to return my money. I had to give them two more calls to get my money back and it cost me more (time and money) to get my refund than it should have.

this is what I keep hearing about them.
I think if they are in it for us (like you Gilmore for example) then sure we would all help out, because its a team effort. .. it seems with them that we are just trying to help them gain money.

man, I would have no problem giving info if I actually knew anything (but I don't).

I don't understand why anyone wouldn't want to help. It doesn't lead directly to a revenue source, it's just providing information to catalog cards they plan on listing for sale.

By not helping, you're not just doing nothing yourself. Your hurting the ability of collectors to track down cards they may want, or at want to see. Cards that a limited pool of people are aware of. By being listed on a mainstream site, more collectors see the card & have the opportunity to find something new for their player.

People take the information they possess too seriously. This is a hobby. Yes, we're helping a business here, it's not really a business to collectors. So many treat it as such, and the aim of collecting gets lost sometimes.

So I guess you're not not doing anything wrong by not giving information, but you're not doing anything worthwhile with it either.

you pay extra to buy cards from people that have this expertise.. the likes of Southpaw and BAMcards for example.. their prices are reflective of their knowledge of oddball issued items not necessarily the actual market value of said item. If you yourself have all this knowledge why would you offer it up without any compensation to a company intending on using it to make profit for themselves? I highly doubt they email you once to ask a question.. it'll probably be like spam in your mailbox because obviously they are going to take full advantage of free help.

You all will come to this site, post in various threads about specific cards/players/sets/etc, but you won't help out a good hobby site?

Did you ever think that your help can make that site bigger and better, which could bring payments and/or free stuff in the future? That would be too easy, huh. Sorry, but it's stuff like that really grinds my gears.

This is a hobby, full of interactions with others, and 99% of us don't get paid to do it. Support the good parts that still remain, because pretty soon all the negativity is going to ruin it. It's already slowly dying on behalf of the companies, so why continue the trend?

Be proactive, not reactive.

right.. the 99 percent is made of the people here. the ones that are making money here are also risking money, where this is just a big business always taking a cut.

I would help them if I new anything, because I agree with you, but at the same time I completely understand why everyone has a problem with this.
