COMC needs your help (Check Out My Cards.com)

Its things like this that have already ruined this so called hobby.. businesses taking advantage of people for their own personal gain.. If you were asked to make a banner for their site and not commissioned to do it would you knowing it would be used on their site for all to see? if you think they are going to do you any favors for your contributions or its going to make the hobby better your dilusional at best. First and foremost the card industry is a business. as far as the people that come to these types of message boards thats where you find the real heart of the hobby. This site is loaded with collectors that do this purely for enjoyment not profit and that is why I spend time here trading knowledge scans etc.. its a common goal thing. are people coming here taking what they see and read and turning a profit off it.. YOU BET. That is the necessary evil of this business/hobby we love.

Did you ever think that your help can make that site bigger and better, which could bring payments and/or free stuff in the future? That would be too easy, huh. Sorry, but it's stuff like that really grinds my gears.

This is a hobby, full of interactions with others, and 99% of us don't get paid to do it. Support the good parts that still remain, because pretty soon all the negativity is going to ruin it. It's already slowly dying on behalf of the companies, so why continue the trend?

There's a difference between posting on a message board and doing with COMC is asking. 90% of the posts here are "Look at my card" or "check out this guys stats". This is also a community, not a marketplace. If eBay asked people to voluntarily go through listings and make sure the set, year, etc correct, how many people would jump at that opportunity?

I also can't believe so many people are against this. When I went to my last show, I posted that I would look for cards for people. I didn't find anything as most lists were specific, but I asked every dealer if they had what people asked for, including someone's Canseco needs. I didn't do it to make money, but to help some fellow collectors out. I also mentioned in my posts, that I had limited time since I had to work on that Saturday. I remember several 1.00 boxes (my favorites) that I didn't get to look through because time I ran out of time. Maybe I shouldn't have wasted my time helping others out and just cared about looking for what I wanted. I wish I had info they could use and contribute more to the hobby.

what you offered to do I do at every show I attend but is much different than what they are asking for.. if I know a guy here is looking for certain things and I see it I will buy if reasonable or get the dealer info for the person interested. Ive bought and then resold the cards to the person for the same price I paid plus shipping... not looking for profit but to help them out since I was already there at the show anyway. I dig all the bargain bins for 90's inserts and usually pickup key players knowing that I can sell or trade them to people here for their collections. I don't make any money out of it but its my little contribution to what I consider an enjoyable hobby. If someone happens across cards I need Im more than willing to compensate them for their time.. I think COMC should be offering to do so as well because you are taking time that you could be doing other things to help them make profits. I think they should just offer you some store credit.. works out great for them as they keep the money in house but you get something for your efforts if they call upon you often for info.

Its definitely a hobby to some but not to others because not everyone here is a collector. Unfortunately as we see every day the hobby is not always a simple, friendly place some would like to pretend it to be. Knowing this, you shouldn't be upset if people choose not automatically help anyone simply looking to make profit.

Its not like profit generated by investors and prospectors is always being reinvested in cards.

I don't believe the bottom line to be COMC's only goal. I truly believe they are in this because they love doing it, and are glad to be able to make a living at it. It's no different than supporting your local card shop.

Good hobby site? No, that's a good "business" site. They do it as a business, not a hobby. They collect currency, not cards. Big difference. Ok, now that we got that out of the way, I am not referring to cash payouts. If they expect people to work for them for free (its not a charity, so you are working for free), they should add an area to their website where this knowledge can be accessed by the general public since its the general public who is providing this information.And since they are saving money, maybe they should reduce or discount their fees. Some sort of incentive where they don't have to pay out anything, but save customers money.

Ok, now that we got that out of the way, I am not referring to cash payouts. But the general public can already access the information anyone on this board might provide for free. If you have an oddball card, COMC is a great place to try to identify it. They have huge scans of the front and back of all their cards, and they have the year and set (which might have been provided by a volunteer).

All available without charge. To anyone. It helps the hobby to have these cards identified correctly.

I pitched a couple of story ideas to the folks at Beckett Hockey, who were fairly active on the BMB, and they bit on one of them. Asked me to do an outline etc within about 3 days. Sent it to them and asked about pay scales and such. Was told they don't pay for content sourced through the message board. I was flabbergasted. This wasn't a quote with which to caption a card but a two page article. Needless to say, I didn't finish the article.
