I'm sorry, but Ron Santo doesn't deserve to be in the Hall of Fame. If you have to wait this long to get in, you don't deserve it. NOBODY DOES. In my mind, you're either first ballot worthy, or you AREN'T WORTHY! It's the Hall of Fame, not the Hall of Really Good Players. Their should just be the cream of the crop voted in. Not sympathy votes. Whitey Herzog didn't deserve it either. If you have to wait that long to get in, there's a reason for it, you're not worthy.

I know the Veterans Committee voted him in, but I call BS.

Complete and utter BS.

Santo was robbed immediately. He fell off the ballot after only one year. That means he had only one real freaking chance. He wasn't sitting there for 15 years worth of votes getting passed over year after year. His was a travesty of a situation if there ever was one involved with the baseball HOF. The guy was one of the best overall third basemen to EVER play the game. A true HOFer on BOTH sides of the ball. You have no idea what you are talking about.

Santo deserves it and it is overdue. Of the current HOF third basemen he ranks as follows: AVG 8th, OBP 6th (tied), SLG 4th, HR 3rd, RBI 5th, Runs 7th.

No doubt he deserves to be in.
It is a great day to be a Cubs fan!

I have yet to see anyone make a good argument for why he shouldn't be a HOFer. It's always the cliche and vague "He's no Hall of Famer." without any reasons as to why he isn't. I'd love to see someone try.

Such a wonderful person. Too bad for us that he isn't here with us. Would've loved to see his face.

Congratulations Ron.

Not sure about the new Golden Era Committee but I think more people would be up in arms if Jim Kaat made the Hall of Fame. Kaat received 10 votes and was only two votes from getting in via the Golden Era Committee.

It is sad that they elected Santo in posthumously. I am glad I had him sign a ball for me in spring training about 5 years ago.

I just knew that as soon as he made the HOF some nitwit would post about how it is watering the HOF down, blah blah blah.

The sports writers got it wrong plain and simple, they are human they make mistakes. Nobody used advanced metrics to rank players then like they do now. He obviously NOW looks like a HOF player.

You are right that his previous vote totals "tainted" his HOF campaigns but he ALWAYS was a HOF player it just took enough people using the right statistical measures to outweigh the retards who say stuff like "he didn't look like a HOF player or I never paid money to see Santo play"

so your saying Joe DiMaggio doesn't belong in the HOF?

Just because Joe D didn't make it in on the first ballot doesn't mean he wasn't first ballot worthy. Politics at play. Santo for me is an interesting case. I think he is worthy to be in the HOF but I also think Ken Boyer deserves to go in if Santo made it. I feel Santo actually hurt his own chances all those years by actively cheering his own HOF credentials. Now, get Trammell, Simmons, and Jack Morris in there!

They should be embarrassed.

It was a given, everyone knew he would get elected, to do it after he passed is a travesty.

The same could be said for not electing Buck O'Neill as a contributor.
This.

And before Ron ever said a word about the HOF, the writers had it out for him...while he played and after.

he hit over .275, had over 300 HRs and over 2000 hits... plus led the league in WALKS 4 times .....obvious HOFer

NOW you got to let in Garvey, Oliva, Mattingly, Munson, Kluszewski, Colovito, Cash, Minoso, Sain, Hodges, Madlock, Maris, FHoward, Tiant, Staub, RSmith, Kaat, Blue, Foster, Cedeno, Parker, TSimmons, and dozens of other just as good (not great).....

lets get that HOF up to 1,000 memeber by 2015!!!

He did it in 15 seasons, while battling diabetes, at one of the most demanding positions in the game.

He is one of the top 10 third basemen of all time. The fact that there are less 3B in the HOF than any other position player shows how tough it is.

I think people also fail to realize how under-treated and over-looked diabetes was in this era.

He was basically self-medicating during games with candy, and his teammates thought it was "funny" to eat them all while he was in the field.

While I don't believe Santo should be in the HOF, it was amazing he did it back then being a Type 1 diabetic. Back then, you could only take Cow/Pig origin insulin, which the body would build up a resistance to over time.

Good stuff.

Happy for Santo even if he isnt going to get a chance to enjoy it.

Wont get into the HOF debate because:

a) writers can be biased for/against people

b) a lot depends on the other players being elected the years you are

c) guys who are obviously HOF worthy sometimes dont get in right away and guys who are questionable sometimes do get in right away (ie Alomar not getting in on first try and Puckett does)

NONE of those guys is beloved the way Santo was. That is what put Santo over the simple stats and into the Hall in my view. That bothers a lot of the statistically-minded people around. So be it.
