Tough to offer an opinion on the guy. His success will probably depend on whether the Cubs get him some starting pitching. I'll be looking to see if the team plays better fundamental baseball as the year progresses.

As a Cubs fan, I am quite disappointed that Epstein did not consider Sandberg because he hasn't coached at the Major League level. How long did Sandberg play in the Majors for? Does he think he did not pay attention during that time to what the various managers did? Has he not had a very successful run as a manager in the Minor Leagues, moving up one class at a time? He would be invigorating to the Cubs fan base and most certainly deserves to be the Cubs manager, in my opinion. Give him a shot. We don't have much talent overall right now. See what he can do with hit. If Epstein really wanted to make a splash in Chicago, he needed to hire Sandberg and tell Pujols, "Here is a contract. Fill in the numbers it will take for you to be a Cub".

Homerism and throwing big contracts around is what got them in the mess they are in.
Whoever manages the Cubs over the next few years is going to have to endure a media **** storm as they rebuild. They are likely not going to be very competitive.
So what good would it do to have a popular name for a manager, and an aging $30 million first baseman?

At 31, Pujols is in the latter part of the PRIME of his career. He will be "aging" in about 4 years, in my opinion. What is Dale Sveum's managerial resume? I wouldn't think he would be any better of a choice than Sandberg. I'm not sure what the homerism that you are referring to in the past was, but Sandberg is definitely worthy of a shot. Heck, the Cardinals interviewed him. How painful would it have been for a Cubs fan to be beaten by a Cardinals team managed by Ryno?
I won't deny having some bad, big contracts: Soriano, Fukudome, Zambrano, etc... The Soriano one didn't look bad at the time, based on his age and production at the ML level. Fukudome and Zambrano have been busts. Ramirez was big, but in the end, the only thing that hurt us regarding that was his injuries. We need to rebuild the pitching and find a bat. Pujols certainly is a bat we need. Would you rather have Fielder? Age-wise, yes. But he isn't nearly the player that Pujols is, and his production will decline a lot faster due to his weight issues as he gets older.

Maybe I am being a homer, or just optimistic, but I don't see the complete lack of talent that some others do.
How about a few quick fixes:
1. Sign Mark Buehrle to a 3 year deal approx $33 million
2. Sign Bruce Chen to a 2 year deal, approx $8 million
3. Sign Prince to a 7 year deal, $155 million
4. Sign Josh WIllingham to a 1 year $7 million
5. Trade Carlos Zambrano, there are multiple teams interested
Gets us to the following rotation
1. Matt Garza
2. Mark Buehrle
3. Ryan Dempster
4. Bruce Chen
5. Andrew Cashner
Starting Lineup
C - Geo Soto
1B - Prince Fielder
2B - Darwin Barney
SS - Starlin Castro
3b - Still up in the air

As for those that wanted Sandberg seems the Cubs don't have him managing for them in say 4 years atleast.
He will get his chance to manage sometime soon enough, but not here in Chicago.

Dale Sveum Favored to Be Cubs' New Manager
I am not a fan of Ryno as Manager and yes I am a fan of the Cubs. Ryno was more than gracious at every minor league park he went to when it came to the fans. However, his temper as Manager has been an issue. I am all about some emotion but there has to be a line. When I last watched a game he managed I had been told by several that I might want to make sure my kid wasn't close to field level. In around the third inning Ryno was tossed and used every expletive imaginable and then some. I know a guy who named his son after Ryne and he was in the next section over. He picked up his kid and left.
I am a big boy. I understand from having a media credential that language is part of the game. However, based on the extracurricular I think Ryno is not the best option for the Cubs right now. It is already a circus on the north side. Having Sandberg's antics would only be a distraction.
On another note I like the idea of distancing the former players from the current direction of the organization. I am tired of the lovable loser mentality. While I commend every past Cub the fact remains the same that they did not win a title.

Fielder has stated he'll take no less than $200 million, Pujols wants to be the highest paid player in the game, and anywhere you trade Zambrano, the Cubs would still be paying at least $15 million of his contract.
I realize these aren't popular "Cubbie" opinions, but:

They don't need Fielder or Pujols at 1B.
They can find a serviceable 1B for a quarter of the money.
They need to rebuild this organization from the ground up, and that doesn't involve quick fixes and band-aids.

Ryno's temper is well documented. Just do a search and you will find more info. I cannot remember the level, maybe Peoria, where the major league club gave him a warning. It was getting detrimental for him to be in the clubhouse more than in the dugout. Again, class act with the fans. I have seen the guy sign before every game for a wall of fans each night. However, I really think the guy would be more of a distraction than help. Granted, it has been awhile since I heard about him. Maybe he has calmed down a bit.

Sandberg wasn't right for the job. What happens when the team fails for several years? Do you fire Ryno? Baseball is not about bringing back HOFers to please the fans. In the past, it is something the Cubs would have done, but I truely believe this is a new era. Ricketts wants to win. I really don't think the Cubs will go for the quick fix. It doesn't bring prolonged success and is ultimately why Hendry failed. Sure I wouldn't mind if they signed Fielder, but free agency is a way to add the finishing touches to your team, and the Cubs have too many vacancies to fill. They need to find a way to deal Soriano, Zambrano, Marmol, Marshall, and Dempster, build up the system, see what their younger players can do, add some strong pitching after next season when the free agent class is stronger, and most importantly wait. This is going to take some time and after 103 years, I think we can wait a little longer.

For those that want Ryno, let me ask this: do you want your favorite fan-boy manager to take it on the chin for 3 years until the team un-asses itself, or would you rather have a capable manager that, when fired, won't be missed and isn't attached to the legacy of the club.
Also, Sveum has 2 different post-seasons as a bench coach AND a manager (albeit interim for a series they lost 3-1), and has managed at the MLB level for some time. He is FAR more qualified, at this point, that Sandberg. And I'm saying this about 1 of only 2 Cubs I could EVER tolorate (Grace being the other).

I would hope Ryno would be given a few years to get some experience at the Major League level while the system was building up. Then, when the system has developed and has talent, he has experience to put us over the top. That is why I want him.
