Now, I will be shocked if Hammel wins the spot over Niemann.

How was it inevitable? Just curious.
Maddon has consistently said there is still stuff he needs to work on. Garza, Kazmir, Shields and Sonnanstine are all locks for the rotation, leaving one spot for Niemann/Hammel/Price. Since Niemann has nothing left to prove, he should get that fifth spot.WJCIII said:Jaypers said:Not shocked at all. It was inevitable.

abncollectsautos said:it will be good for him, kind of longoria last season. get a little bit of extra work in and build up a little confidence by beating up on some AAA players. then after 4-6 starts price will be confident and motivated and come up and be ready. not that he isnt ready now, just no room for him
Maybe they are being cheap, but Niemann has earned his chance for the last spot in the rotation since 05. His body of work is much greater than Price's as a pro.cowboysrule48 said:abncollectsautos said:it will be good for him, kind of longoria last season. get a little bit of extra work in and build up a little confidence by beating up on some AAA players. then after 4-6 starts price will be confident and motivated and come up and be ready. not that he isnt ready now, just no room for him
There is room for him, the team is just being cheap.

If they are planning on trading one, it gives them more time, and keeping both gives them a little extra insurance incase one of their starts gets injured early in the season.
I am a huge price fan, and agree with the move. I would prefer to see Niemann get a chance to start for a bit. He takes way too long to warm up and can not hold on a base runner. Doesn't sound like a RP to me.
Also how is this moving making the Rays look cheap. Last time they did a similiar move (Longoria) they signed him to a long term deal

If that deal was in place before the season started, do you think he still would have started the season in AAA?
Huffamaniac said:I am not sure, but i am leading towards yes. I think it is a good idea to have your #5 starter start the season in the minors if he is young and inexperienced to get regular work. Niemann is out of options. He is too talented to be let go, or traded for a fraction of his value.

I completely agree. I do think that Price will not be the #5 starter by the end of the year though. He is just way too talented.
