Do Cubs fans have a right to be mad at Dempster?

I think that you DO NOT UNDERSTAND the situation. Dempster GAVE THE CUBS TWO TEAMS, DODGERS/BRAVES. So theo/jed worked a deal with one of the two teams Ryan preffered. Now Ryan is waffling, and taking his damn time. How in the world can you blame Jed/Theo for that?

So, yes, I am annoyed with Dempster. Mainly because he said yes, I will go to the braves/dodgers, and then backed out of that. Dempster has really hurt his reputation with this move, no doubt about it.

I UNDERSTAND that. Didn't this whole fiasco start because Dempster claims he wasn't told about the trade - he found out via the media? I could be wrong, I don't claim to be an insider, I'm just an a-hole who listens to sports radio.

There are several reports that the Cubs didn't tell him that he was being dealt, so the blame may not be entirely one sided.

Exactly, this was my understanding of the issue.

Any player that has any sort of no-trade clause (or 10-5 rights) has the right to say no to any deal, regardless of what they've previously said. If the Cubs wanted him out that bad, maybe they should have traded him a few years ago before he'd reached his 10-5 rights. These are the risks any team takes when they sign a player and give him a no-trade clause, or the player may potentially will reach 10-5 rights with that team.

If Ichiro said "I'd go to the Yankees", then changed his mind after a deal was in place and left as a FA the next year, would I be upset? No. That's his right he has earned.

In Dempster's case, no one, outside of Dempster and the Cubs, knows the true situation behind him not wanting to go to Atlanta. And at the end of the day, I believe LA has had an offer on the table to Chicago since BEFORE the Atlanta "deal". Maybe that's part of Dempster's issue too in that a deal was there for him to go to LA, and the Cubs just held out to try and get something else.

At the end of the day, it's his right to not accept a trade.

I agree with this. I heard a few "insiders" today state that someone on the Braves end leaked it before the Cubs could contact Dempster. Not trying to defend the Cubs, but if this is the case, I am not sure you can blame them for not reaching out to him first. The team has to have a deal in place before they can bring anything to him to sign off on.

Can't remember where, but I heard that they had been discussing the trade with the Braves the 3 days prior and keeping Dempster up to date. The story was intially leaked by a Braves writer on Twitter before the Cubs could get Dempster's approval. Dempster then went on Twitter to state there was no trade. There is no way Theo and Jed would have wasted all of their time working on the deal, without being confident that Dempster was ok going to the Braves.
