Do Cubs fans have a right to be mad at Dempster?

First off I'll say that I like Dempster as a person and player, but he should not have said what he said.

As everyone knows Dempster told the Cubs that he would "help" them out and accept a trade to a list of teams. On top of that list was LA and Atl. So as everyone knows the Atl trade was a done deal except for Dempster had to ok it which he didn't. Now back to LA which he now says is where he wants to go. They originally had an offer on the table of Chris Withrow and Garrett Gould and the Cubs turned it down but with Dempster saying he wants only LA the Cubs have to go back to the Dodgers kind of handcuffed and the Dodgers know this. The return is going to be less now knowing its LA or stay in Chicago.

I know Dempster has the right being a 10/5 player to say no but my question is.

Should Cubs fans be mad about this whole situation?
Dempster did make it worse on himself by saying that would "help" his team out but in the end does he really owe the Cubs anything?

As a Cubs fan, the bigger issue for me is how could Theo/Jed botch this so badly? What were they thinking? Now they're saying they may just hold onto him because they won't be pressured into selling low? I expect far more from both. This rebuild was the only thing we had to hang our hats on and it would have been nice to get SOMETHING back for Dempster/Garza. I think they overplayed their hand with Dempster and now they're screwed.

I don't believe this falls back on Theo/Jed at all. This was a done deal just waiting on Dempster to approve and from what I've read the reason he didn't say yes was because it was leaked as a done deal without Dempster saying anything

I am probably the only Cubs fan who wants both guys to stay Cubs. Both of them are proven pitchers. Dempster loves Chicago, and has pitched pretty well for the Cubs during his time here. I am hoping he re-signs with us to finish out his career. Garza, in my opinion is a guy you try and build your rotation around. The only problem is he has been pretty inconsistent, but the stuff is there.

Now, I wouldn't have been too upset with the deal that was in place with the Braves. I would have given the Cubs another guy in the rotation for the rest of this year and next. Much better option than Volstad or Travis Wood every 5th day.

This is what I was looking for. Someone that has seen and read all that has been going on with this! If Dempster does not get traded I don't think there's a chance in hell he gets an extension. It will really be an awkward last 2 months of this season.

If you only want to get traded to the Dodgers then don't say you would be willing to go to Atl

AS a life time Cub fan, { 50 plus years ] It does not matter to me. They will suck with him or without him or whom ever they get for him. Lets put David Price,CC,Mike Trout,and Andrew Mccutchen on this team and they would still suck, Why? Thats just the way it is. They are the Cubs after all. Rebuild you say? They have been doing so for over 100 years. I say tear it all down and start new. They will never win a world series again in that sh-it hole wrigley field.

Hell no. It is his right to say yes our no since he earn it, And I know he is looking out for his family since he has 2 very young kids, and is daughter Riley has Digeorge Syndrome.

And as a fan I have been around for many years and the trade deadline can make for good topic with or without the stuff real and fiction. Most of the time someon wants to scoop the rest of the world, so they make stuff up or even seem to say they have a source, of a trade and it does not pan out. Again I don't really care either way.
I can careless, if he "supposably"screw up his value. There is only 3people who know the real truth about what happened, The Cubs/Braves and Ryan Dempster.

In the Braves disaster , I think Demp. would have gone if it the Braves offer some kind of extension to him, but there was no report of that, and I really think the Braves would have rental him for this season, and then would low-ball offer him, making him having to go find someone to play for (in the free agent market) And really does not want to move, then move again.

So with the Dodgers on the other hand, I could see this as the more likely scenario all along, since they would mostly sigh him to an extension and his best friend is already with the team in one Ted Lilly.
Then he would get to know the Drs. in LA Area and not have to move his family after this season. (I know the Dodgers) could get him and then balk at resigning him, but for my money, he will be there(LA) for the rest of his career, which wil be about 3-4 more years.

There are several reports that the Cubs didn't tell him that he was being dealt, so the blame may not be entirely one sided.

Honestly though if he stays they get to win every 4th day and get a compensation pick after the season. If he gets traded they may get a couple guys who may or may not ever play for the MLB team. So not a huge deal either way.

It's one of the few times a player is going to have the advantage in negotiations let him make sure he's gets what he needs.

They won't get a comp pick for him unless they offer to pick up his last year at 13 or 14$ million and he declines I believe

I think Cubs fans do have a right because as Skrip mentioned, Dempster mentioned two teams he would go to, the Braves or the Dodgers. Theo has/had been trying to work out a deal with the Dodgers (Dempsters preferred location), but the Braves offer was exponentially better so he had to make that deal (sadly it fell through because of Dempster's 10/5 rights).

As the situation stands now, I believe Dempster stays in Chicago, and I prefer it that way. The Dodgers GM, Ned Colletti, is the one I'm most frustrated with. The Dodgers just made a deal to land Hanley Ramirez for the next 2.5 years, yet don't have a pitcher to send out their every 5th day with the trade involving Eovaldi. Without a pitcher, they will fade from the playoff race, yet they feel they're in a position of power with the Cubs. Yes, they do know that Dempster really only wants to go to LA, but I don't think they understand that Theo won't cave.

Even though there are multiple SP's on the market still (the Dodgers don't have anyone in the system to land them). The only way the Dodgers can land a SP, is if no other team wants him (Dempster). They need to have some realistic demands and give us a worthy prospect for a pitcher that has been exceptional so far this season. Theo severely lowered his requests, offering Dempster straight up for Allen Webster, and he got turned down.

At this point, I'd like for Dempster to stay in Chicago, so LA can enjoy missing out on the playoffs because their GM doesn't know how to make a trade.

I have no problem with Dempster wanting to go to the Dodgers, but he handled the situation completely unprofessionally. He not only backed out. He completely freaked out on Twitter stating there was no trade making it obvious to the Dodgers that he only wanted to go to LA, killing all of the Cubs' leverage. Honestly I hope Dempster is dealt before the deadline, for his sake because he will be booed relentlessly and so the team starts to lose more. No point in getting a #5 pick when they can lose a few more games and get #1 or 2.

Yeah, just talked to my brother; he said the radio talk is going crazy. I think there is more to the story since Dempster and the Cubs "had" a good relationship........maybe Theo did something to upset the apple cart......nah, not Theo.
