Ever get in a collecting rut that lasts for months ? That's what I'm currently in. Stop reading now if you don't care.

I still enjoy picking up JJ stuff, but so many problems with the '12 TTT stuff is leading me away from him. I easily become jaded with idiot sellers wanting Naomi and any other future Archer's for a $35 card. Then folks using the lines of "Oh, I misplaced them (two White Whale JJ's) in the console of my car", thus a month and a half delay.

I've tried a few new collections (Torii Hunter, Cecil Shorts & Bilal Powell) and enjoy picking their stuff up, but it just doesn't make me super happy. I like looking at new stuff, but, right now, I just feel "collecting wise" empty, unsatisfied and just plain depressed. With all kinds of other folks now saying they wanna pick up JJ, that doesn't help. I just feel like dumping everything into a 50 gallon drum, dousing it with light fluid, striking the match and walking away.

This is the main reason I haven't posted a ton either. Trying to trade / sell off any non PC stuff and then we'll see how I'm doing mentally then.

My issue is that there aren't any cards that I "want" anymore. I see tons that I have to have, but none I "want," if that makes sense.

It happens.. I go through it frequently with my football stuff. I rarely pick up nomars anymore. I think a lot of the enthusiasm comes back when the regular season games start. With nomar I lost the most excitement when he retired. So at least you have jj tossing still.

I've been in that kind of a rut for at least a year.

It happens man brotha. Just have to keep your head above water and wait it out.

You will get out of that rut eventually ;)

I'm at the point in my collection where I am really satisfied with what I have and will always find more Griffeys that I probably "want" but I probably don't really need. I'm trying to pay off my debts right now and then focus on saving for the future. I'm sure you will get back into collecting or maybe a different hobby that you will find interesting will come about, such as coin collecting! Good Luck!:)

I've been at that point for the past year and a half. I still pick up the occasional card for my Wisconsin Badgers, San Francisco 49ers or Cincinnati Reds collection but nothing other than that. I stopped adding to my Dan Haren collection over a year ago, I just lost interest. I want to sell it but I just haven't yet, mainly because I put so much time, effort and money into it.

This sounds like good advice.

Burnout often happens to someone who's holding on too tight... people sometimes forget that breaks and life balance are a collector's friends.

Dave,

its normal to go through these phases.. you go hard for a while and then the market dries up on the kind of stuff you like or the prices just become rediculous and it forces you to slow down. I've sorta had this funk for the last few months with not much popping up so I've just decided that I will go after the things that I really like and worry about the rest later on. Hang in there!

As a prospector, I get in ruts all the time. They are pretty random and I've been trying to figure out over the years if there is a pattern to them (certain times of the year, after certain events have passed, etc).

I think about that all the time. I think it's a good thing though as it may be a little bit obsessive to constantly collect and never break. Expensive too.

It's hard for me not to be obsessive though. That's how I've always been with player collections. I open packages and think, "Yay, here's a card" ... "yay, here's a card" ... "yay, here's a card".

I think that's how everyone gets. You start to see it all. Me personally, I get satisfaction out of completing sets and picking up autos and rookies I don't have of guys I collect. So when I feel like it, I take a break from Bagwell stuff. But it's never usually a long break. Normally pretty short really. I think where I get overwhelmed is I've got too many irons in the fire. Sometimes I wonder if I should cut everything off and sell everything not bagwell or Astros related. But I can't. There just too much cool stuff out there to collect.
