Re: Draft Picks Official Signings Thread

Less than 15 hours and counting.

Heyman reports the M's don't seem to be close to signing Hultzen as of now, but that's "not shocking".

M's fans didn't want him to begin with. It would go down as one of the worst picks ever if they don't sign him. In one of the most loaded classes ever, if you can't come away with a stud at #2, you're in trouble.

Local kid signs with the Reds. I am friends with the family. Coached him in Little League. Well, did not really have to teach him much. Just run him out there for his six innings a week (the old rule for pitching). Got early round money for someone drafted in the 23rd round.

SOUTHINGTON — If you need to buy a red T-shirt and live in Southington, don’t go to Walmart.

They won’t have anymore.

Lynne Romano, mother of the newest Cincinnati Red, Sal Romano, rushed to the store Friday evening and bought every last one the store had to create makeshift Reds jerseys in anticipation of Saturday morning’s impromptu and celebratory signing ceremony at the family’s house that made Romano’s leap to professional baseball official.

“Having the family there, at 11 o’clock last night, they all decided to make Reds T-shirts,” Romano, the Connecticut Gatorade player of the year said, “That’s the Romano family. I’m happy to have them all here during this special day.”

Romano signed and dated sheet after sheet of paper under the instruction of Lee Seras, the Reds’ scout who worked so diligently to sign the right-hander.

After the paperwork was finally done, Romano was $450,000 richer, and had a full-time job as a baseball player.

“This was the job he wanted,” Lynne said. “We hope and we pray that he’s ready for this, and we hope he is. We trust him, He’s a good good kid.”

Romano, just 17, needed parental consent and cosignatories on all his paperwork. He took his first flight on an airplane just Tuesday, and on Friday he will fly solo again, this time en route to Arizona for a two-week throwing program.

“Right now it’s basically the excitement, enjoying it,” Romano said, taking it all in before his pro career abruptly starts next week. “When I get down there I am going to have to get acquainted with it, living on my own.”

Romano did live on his own briefly at Tennessee. For a month and a half, the pitcher shed body fat while putting on muscle, participating in his first elite conditioning program.

He had every intention of staying in Knoxville and playing in the SEC, but the Reds had their eyes on the 23rd round pick, and refused to relent.

“He never thought that they would offer him that much,” Romano’s mother said. “He thought they would offer $100,000 or $200,000. It is third-round money that he was offered.”

A player drafted in Romano’s slot would typically see a $50,000 signing bonus at most, but Romano was no typical 23rd-round selection.

“We didn’t want to waste a high-round pick if he wasn’t going to sign,” Reds’ Northeast Scouting Supervisor Lee Seras said. “People were surprised about the 23rd round, but he’s really a third or fourth round kid. In the northeast, a lot of kids go to school, so its tough to sign a lot of kids in the northeast.”

However the Reds paid him like a third or fourth-round pick, and that’s what matters.

“That’s business,” Romano said, looking back at the negotiations. “I learned that through this entire experience that it’s all just one big business. I guess they knew what they were planning to do the entire time.”

The club has yet to sign their first-round selection, another right-handed pitcher from California, but as of Saturday, Romano commanded the second-highest bonus paid by the Reds in the entire 50-round draft class.

“It’s surreal, its unbelievable,” Romano’s proud mother said. “It happened very quickly. It was a whirlwind the last 48 hours.”

Romano elected to attend the University of Tennessee, intent on using the visibility and competitiveness of the SEC to fuel him to a career in pro baseball.

A Cubs beat writer says Dan Vogelbach has been in Phoenix the past week working out already at Cubs complex. Apparantly, he signed a long time ago.

Have the Twins top guys signed today that had been unsigned?

Levi Michael has not signed yet, or at least it hasn't been announced.

Did the other 2 sign? I know they said in the ST there were 3 top guys left, 2 and 3 might have been the bonus compensatory picks or something.

Any news on Danny Hultzen?

Nothing new. If he does sign, we probably won't know until midnight EST.

Callis ---

Wondering if all 33 first-rders will sign. Tms sticking to low slots is creating problems. #Twins & Levi Michael hitting a snag. #mlbdraft
