Orioles bringing up top prospect Bundy

The Baltimore Orioles initially had said that they would not promote their top pitching prospect, right-hander Dylan Bundy.

A pennant race and an 18-inning game have a way of changing a team’s best-laid plans.

Bundy, 19, is heading to the majors.

The Orioles informed Bundy early Wednesday morning that they were promoting him from their Instructional League team in Florida.

Bundy is expected to join the team in time for its series finale against the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night at 10:10 p.m. ET, and likely will fill a limited role in relief.

The Orioles need a fresh arm - they used seven relievers for a combined 12 2/3 scoreless innings in their 4-2 victory over the Mariners on Tuesday night.

Bundy, the fourth overall pick in the 2011 draft out of Owasso (Okla.) H.S., went a combined 9-3 with a 2.08 ERA in 23 starts at three minor-league levels in his first full professional season.

He peaked at Double A, where he made three starts. For the season, he struck out 119 and walked 28 in 103 2/3 innings while allowing just 67 hits.

The Orioles initially declined to promote Bundy, sending him to the Instructional League for further refinement. Bundy issued four walks in 5 1/3 innings in his final minor-league start.

"The instructional league starts on (Sept. 12),” manager Buck Showalter told reporters in late August. “What did he walk, four guys last night? There are some things . . .

“He's at a level he's being challenged at, just like he got challenged more at (Single A) Frederick. I think the progression of his development has been great. Couldn't ask for a better progression. I think we're a little over 2 1/2 weeks for the instructional league to start. I know they've got some plans for him, some things he needs to work on there."

Showalter and his staff, however, had talked excitedly about the possibility of using Bundy in September all season. The Orioles have managed their roster aggressively all season, and on Aug. 9 promoted their top position prospect, shortstop Manny Machado, to play third base.

Machado, who turned 20 on July 6, has played an important role in the team’s success down the stretch, solidifying the infield defense and batting .264 with a .708 OPS.

No doubt! I don't think anyone guessed how solid he would be at 3rd.
He IS second in fielding % for all of the AL third baseman.

They couldn't have waited til later to call him instead of 4 am? I would not have been a happy camper to being woken up at 4 in the morning. I'm glad he got called up though and I hope he helps the orioles make the playoffs.

I think it is a good idea. It incentives next year for him. "Hey kid, do well and this is where you will be" It does start his arbitration clock, but then again, the Orioles have made some blunders on paying too much for players (sorry O's fans but it sort of true). I am hoping he electrifies the team similar to Matt Moore last year.

All I have is 3 Elite autos (one incoming) and a Sterling Base auto. Had a Blue ref auto that had some defects that I traded for a Bowman Harper auto.

So this will be a David Price/Joba style affair? Hopefully we tell him to just relax and throw two pitches.

It feels so strange, as a lifelong O's fan, to feel excited about late season baseball. I love it.

@Jaypers413 (IL): Hey, Jim. Your first impression of Bundy's callup? Think we could be seeing another instance of David Price if they make it to the postseason?

Jim Callis: I would have called him up earlier. You don't have to blow him out, but he arguably has a better arm than anyone on their staff and he can be an asset as they try to fight their way into the playoffs. I understand trying to keep pitchers healthy, but there's no sure way to health and I can't fathom why the Nationals and Orioles aren't using everything they have. Kudos to the Orioles for turning to Bundy, even if they needed an 18-inning game to make them see the light.

Andrew (Baltimore): It was my understanding the O's didn't consider Bundy ready for the bigs and sent him to instructs. Is this move merely a matter of needing an extra body in their pen, or has their opinion of him changed recently?

Jim Callis: Sounds like more the latter, that they're bullpen was drained after working 12.2 innings in last night's 18-inning victory.

He looked okay today. Fastball was around 94 and he had a couple nice slurves to Valencia that was swung at a missed - around 84 MPH. I thought maybe his first game, he would have enough adrenaline to pump the heater up a bit higher. But he seemed calm. Surprised Buck put him in that situation but he handled it well.
