For some reason I got to thinking about the time I got scammed while I was reading another thread. The year was 1997 and Yahoo Auctions was one of the 2 bigger auction websites. I won a 30 count lot of Barry Larkin cards for $1.25 with free shipping. I sent a money order and nothing ever came. That was my first online transaction and the first time I have ever been scammed. That was also the last time I was scammed, even after thousands and thousands of purchases, trades, and sales.

So, how many times have you been scammed online?

PS - If you were the seller of that 30 count Larkin lot, I hope you get bubble guts for the next 3 months

Back in early 2001, I bought what was supposed to be a 5000 box full of only baseball stars and semistars from the late 90's through the early 2001 releases for $50 plus S/H. It took well over a month, but what I got was about 4000 cards loosely packed in a 5K box, 25% of them early 90's Fleer basketball commons, the rest junk baseball commons. I wasn't even able to leave feedback, as it was past the feedback time period. I was able to recoup a few bucks selling the basketball cards but the baseball stuff I got was useless.

Got taken on a few $50+ basketball cards that shipped to Taiwan. Sad part is Ebay/Paypal sided on the one they left positive feedback for.

Close one was a Jay Bruce TCU Black Ref Auto. Sold for $350. Buyer opened an "item not received" case even though his landlord signed for it. After contacting Paypal(they actual sided with me right away) and threatening to call the cops he closed the case. Claimed some hacker opened the case and sent all those emails. :D

When I was 16, I collected WWE figures, I was able to flip the classic tag team set on eBay for a huge profit...except 1 guy from Australia bought 3 of each set, he claimed he sent cash in a sealed envelope. I never got anything in the mail, he eventually started messaging me claiming I committed fraud and I was facing serious Jail time etc. he even went as far as to call me pretending to be eBay threatening to press charges. (I figured that out after my cellphone bill came and my dad asked who Called me from Australia) As a 16 year old, this all scared me to death. So I sent the packages, lost out on about $600 of profit.

Not sure if you can call this scammed but it was close and surely *******.

I seen a collector over at the beckett forums at that time had 4 cards out of 5 needed to have an entire print run. I had the 3/5, after speaking to them and hearing how they collect this player religiously I figured I would give the guy a good deal, and I mean a good deal like 75% of the market value (was around a $300 card). With in 2 weeks of selling it the jerk had them graded and listed for sale. He sold them 2 weeks later and ignored my inquires on why he did this. Soon after that he disappeared.

Not once did I even get a thank you after the money was sent to me.

When I was new to the "trading scene" I worked a deal of top Hall Of Fame autographs & gameused (at the time they sold VERY well) for 3 boxes of unopened tribute. Guy says hes not going to break rest of his case and starts trading me more unopened boxes. Sucked into the prospect of getting multiple boxes I was blinded. Wind up to agreeing to a blockbuster trade, his ebay was good at the time (still early in the days). We agree to send DC and such. Day later guy said he had a great expierence and would love to trade for more of my cards. Asked me for a list of what I had. Told him I was working alot of OT and it would be at least a week before I could get it together. He makes small talk and asks me what I do. I told him a Police Officer. Emails started to change as his vigor was no longer there. Week later the boxes still dont show up as does the DC. He still responded to my emails as if he did not know what happened. One email he even had the balls to say your a cop cant you find it? lol. Week and a half passes and still nothing. I told him I cant find packages as thats the Postal Service but I sure as hell can find people with one phone call. 4 days later my cards arrive back to me in a new package (all of them there). Would have cost me more than $3000 at the time and a large part of the PC. Newbie mistake....

I've been hit twice..

Once I was trading for a 05 heritage Jason Bay sp. I sent my end and the trader sent me a base. Asked me to return that card which I did and then he disappeared. It was a small loss but taught me to be leery.

Then I was looking to complete a "rainbow" of chrome and traded for a low serial numbered card. I sent my end promptly. The trader told me he would send mine at the same time. A few days later he said it would go out soon. A few weeks later same thing.. So I bought the card on eBay and chalked it up as a loss.

I haven't lost more than $25 in cards and shipping but I avoid trading because of those two instances.

It wasn't card related but a couple of years a ago I was going to be in San Francisco so I bought tickets to the 49ers game via craigslist. I paid via paypal so I figured everything would be on the up and up. When the tickets arrived they were standard 49ers season tickets so I thought they were legit. Well when I go to the game and try to get in they told me I need to go to the main ticket booth. I guess this guy bought season tickets and then cancelled the old tickets and had them reprinted. He then went about selling both pairs of tickets to people they said it had been happening all season. So I had to buy 3 more tickets in the nosebleeds just so we could go to the game. I tried to get my money back through paypal but they said the account had been emptied and closed and that craigslist purchases weren't covered at that time. I tried to get my money back through my credit card but they said I authorized the charge which I did so I was out of luck there. I ended up just eating the cost of the tickets and learned my lesson on buying tickets on Craigslist. It amazes me the lengths that people go to to scam people out of money.

First and last time I sent something to China/Japan about 12-13 years ago. About $100 - lesson learned.

Back in the day, eBay was the wild west. ANyone with an eBay account could leave positive or negative feedback, even without a transaction taking place.
