They dropped $88 million and have spent $423.5 million. Dont try to go a 1 year basis, because the guys who were dropped for salary were gone anyways, and the guys they signed are now under contract for multiple years.

Well the whole "per year" thing is kind of important because that's how a payroll is looked at. If you want total payroll for all seasons they have the players signed for, then yeah, it was increased, but so is that of every team in MLB who has signed a player for multiple years this off-season. So your way of looking at it really makes no sense.

Well, to me it doesnt make sense to try to make the argument that their "dropping money" or "cutting salary" when their spending close to and likely over half a billion dollars in the end. Yes, for next year they might have less in salary for the team but in the longrun they have spent multiple times over.

It just means they won't be signing many players in the next couple years. Their next big contract drop is Jeter who has a good 2-4 seasons left in him. So the Yankees better hope it works out with the big three they've signed because they won't exactly have much money to spend in the future.

Apples and Oranges. You are comparing Annual Salary to their total future liability. Two different categories. Both totally out of whack, I agree... but two seperate categories none the less...

Team payrolls are looked at on a YEARLY basis... period. No one refers to the total cumulative sum of all contracted players' contracts when they are referring to a team's payroll, because the number would be meaningless. Every player is under contract for a different number of years, so using the total liable contract money for each player's full-term contract is not an interpretable number. Therefore, a reference interval of 1-year is used, so one can compare multiple teams ... as someone above said, it is comparing apples to oranges.

And for the record, the Yankees' 2009 payroll will be UNDER $200M this year, and is actually on the way down. One could even argue that they are ADDRESSING (and not worsening) "the problem" that so many pro-salary-cappers believe there is in the sport.

Hold up, is this true? With the signing of Sabathia, Texeria, and Burnett, the Yankees payroll is only $200 million for the 2009 season!?

Damon and Matsui are both coming off the books after 2009...Thats $25 M

Mariano $15m after 2010 (probably will be his last year)
Posada $15 after 2011

So they do have a decent amount of $$$ coming off. They will probably have to give **** a contract 5 years at $70m or sooner or later

They got rid of a big salary in Giambi.....

and Mussina...

...and Pavano...

...and Pettite...

...and Farnsworth if they are off the hook for him(not sure) and his salary.

Now throw in the $26.7 million luxury tax they won't have. Thats a lot of extra spending money to sign a few big names.

And don't forget all the money theyre taking from the new york tax payers to build their new stadium. It allows them to go out an agree to almost a half billion dollars in total contracts because new yorks tax revenue will pay for part of their stadium. Who cares about schools, roads, and state provided services when tax payers can buy a stadium for a team that throws money around like that.

I believe the Yankees salary for 09 will be somewhere around $209 million not UNDER $200 million. Its so laughable that were actually trying to make $200 million NOT seem like an outrageous amount of money.

There are plenty of teams that screw cities w/the cost of building stadium. Let's not act like the Yankees are the only team. It's a circle of money!

A lot of the $$ being raised it being raised by issuing municipal bonds backed by the revenue Yankees Stadium will bring in.

Not that I agree, but lets leave out the hundreds of jobs they created for people in that neighboor hood/area. Many were leaching the system. Those people are now trained skilled workers that can move on to a real job when the stadium is done and actually make a living and not leach off the said tax payers.

I'm not saying they're the only ones, just the most obvious choice. I think what the yankees are doing to the city is just as bad as what the marlins do to their fans.

It will be close. Regardless, it is DOWN from last year. Here is an excerpt from ESPN.com tonight:

The Yankees had $88.5 million coming off the books (included in that total -- $23.4 million on Jason Giambi, $16 million on Bobby Abreu, and $11 million to both Mike Mussina and Carl Pavano), and even with the Teixeira contract, they expect their payroll to fall below $200 million.

Alright, so Yankees fans can make the case that the payrole will be down in 2009. Thats fine, and given the evidence I will agree to that. At the same time, I will say that the team having close to $1 Billion dollars tied up in contracts (and you cant tell me its a ridiculous point to make unless you figure their dropping guys and resigning them on a year to year basis because they will be paid the money the contract states) is way over the top. This is especially true when you hear that their asking the city of New York for $300 million. As I sai earlier, the Yankees total team salary for 2009 is $76million+ more than the Red Sox. Just the difference separating the 2 teams (which everyone claims to be so close) is almost double the total team salary of the Rays.
