Why? It seems pretty straight forward, don't lean over a fence you may fall over...If I decide to lean over the fence at the grand canyon can I expect someone to pay my loved ones because they don't have 'catch nets' installed? Stupidity is stupidity and should be treated as such.

It's very arguable that the drop there was a forseeable and preventable danger that the Rangers could have prevented with a net or higher railing, and a Rangers employee's act (Hamilton) led to his fall. If I'm the Texas Rangers I reach a quick settlement because the PR hit they'll take for litigating it will be horrendous.

I couldnt agree more. Stupidity is stupidity. Just like comparing the incident at the stadium to a fall over the Grand Canyon. Two completely different scenarios.

Found an AP photo of the area. Of course everyone wants to be as close to the game as possible without obstruction. The barrier just doesn't seem very high. Of course it is easy to say after the fact. However, I would think prevention from a fall capable of death would require a barrier high enough for a person to have to climb to fall.

That's terrible. Obviously my thoughts are with the family of that man, but they're also with Josh Hamilton. I imagine it's going to be a little hard on him.

I was watching the game out here in San Jose. There was this weird shout from the crowd, but you couldn't tell what was happening. Then the replay came on and you couldn't tell how far the drop was. People just kept looking down though, and you got the feeling something bad happened. This was followed by a delay before the Rangers came to bat. I was pretty sure something bad happened at that point. Awful.

Poor kid just watched his Dad die. I definitely think there should be a net there. Why is there a gap there in the first place? If anything, build the seats to the fence, but allow the walkway underneath.

I watched my fatherdiee at the age of 32 and I know how I still feel 2 years later, I can't imagine how this little guy feels at 8 years old. It is true that no matter how bad your life is, someone has it a little bit harder. Horrible horrible accident.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the son and other family members of Shannon Stone, the man who died after falling at the Rangers' game.

Horrible. And to think something very similar happened a year and a day ago at the same park is astonishing.
Hopefully parks all around the league take another hard look at safety...

not even a terrible height, he was just very very unfortunate to have fallen on his head.
if he lands on his side or feet, broken bones but not dead. as non horrific as the video looks
on 1st viewing, knowing the end result makes it just blood curdling and horrifying.

I'm saddened greatly by the fact that this man died and his son basically witnessed the event. I'm about to take my family (wife and three kids, 10 and under) to Wrigley in a couple of weeks so my two youngest can see their first Phillies game -- I cannot even imagine the lifelong trauma and heartache that boy is going to have as a result of watching this happen...esp if/when he ever attends another game.

That being said, I am very very worried about Josh Hamilton.

Most of us know the demons he has battled for so long, and now he has this on his shoulders. He will undoubtedly be thinking over and over, if only I'd thrown that ball a bit higher, or farther ... or not at all. I do not know how I would be able to handle such a thing, and Josh Hamilton is in need of some serious emotional support.

Those of you that pray for the family of Shannon Stone, please include Hamilton as well. This could be the type of thing that not only derails his career, but his sobriety as well.

I don't. Remember when he couldn't even be around alcohol so the Rangers changed their post game celebration? And maybe you haven't spent much time with addicts. Something as small as a bad day or an argument with somebody can make an alcoholic hop back on the wagon. For drug addicts, it can be something like an old friend coming back into town. For some people, it is really hard to stay sober. I've seen it first hand. And none of these people had a genuine reason, like they accidentally caused and witnessed the death of another human being.


Man, I ran a squirrel over and saw him skid across the concrete in my rearview mirror. I couldn't get that image out of my head for like a month. And that was a squirrel. PLUS, that was like 10 years ago, and I can still remember it like it was yesterday. I can't image what Josh's situation would be like. Ugh.
