Love seeing all the pickups!

Feb has been a busier month than I anticipated.

Love this one.

Topps HOF Pitcher Run 1952-1981 (no RC)
Card 9 of 30

1961 Hoyt Wilhelm #545
PSA 7
His 9th of 20 base Topps cards

Runner-up choice for 1961:
Don Drysdale

Runner-up choice for Wilhelm: 1954

Why his ‘61? Just a tough high series card of Old Sarge flashing his legendary knuckleball. He’d ride that epic floater until he was nearly 50 and all the way to Cooperstown as the first reliever ever enshrined.

Got a pile the last couple of days, here's the highlights:

020822-1.jpg
Two more Dilfers from 2021 Mosaic - the "Choice Black Gold" 7/8 and the "Peacock." Brings me up to 9 of 35 variations with a couple more on the way.

020822-2.jpg
1998 Leaf Fractal Matrix Die Cut Giambi completes the team set. The 2003 Leaf Limited Gold Spotlight 14/50 Hudson and 2004 Silver Spotlight 03/50 Giambi get me within a few on those sets.

020822-3.jpg
A few Topps Retired Black/99 parallels. The 2004 Bowman Sterling Refractor and 2008 Topps Chrome X-Fractor both complete team sets. I still have some work to do on 2003 Fleer Tradition Glossy but this Eric Chavez 062/100 gets me closer.

020822-4.jpg
A couple of 1997 Pacific Light Blue parallels from that year where Light Blue and Silver looked almost exactly the same. Just need two more for that set, McGwire and a common. The 2011 Gypsy Queen Mini Black Cahill was super hard to locate, tough set. Nice looking Rickey insert I didn't have. And a 2010 Topps Target A's team card...weird year where some of the cards from that set aren't too difficult and some are impossible. This one is the latter.

020822-5.jpg
Finally the two cards I'm most excited about, a couple of "crappy base cards." Except these are impossible to find for some reason. The Jose Flores I somewhat understand because it's from a retail-only update release, but you would have thought I'd have found one in the last 20 years. The Thomas I don't know what the deal is...2008 UD Ballpark Collection was a high-end set, but you would think you would see more of these around. They simply never show up.

I figure better to show here than on my Dodger auto thread or football forum, this was a real down the rabbit hole buy. I had the Faulk from before and never thought much about the set, 1994 Score Rookie Redemption Gold Zone. You can tell the difference from the regular set gold rush from the card number I believe, but especially because these players are shown in their college uniforms on the base card.

They were redemption cards and have always been a bit pricy. I never checked how easy (or hard) the redemptions were to find back in 94, but they were individual cards (a few unredeemed cards came with the lot). I borrowed the scan of one of the redemption cards from TCDB

I am not even sure how or why I came across this listing, perhaps it was a seller I was bidding on something else with. He had the set listed minus 1 card (Greg Hill - I am in the market for one now if you have it or any of the unredeemed redemption cards) for a reasonable price and nobody sniped me. I got the near set for less than most Faulk singles seem to be priced at, so score, literally and figuratively. It's been a little bit of a football months or two for me, with several pick ups and possibly a few more on the horizon.

Been a few days since I had a mail day and this one wasn't huge but it does have a big missing piece to a rainbow in it. I missed the only other Helsley Camo RC I've seen the week of release back in 2019. I didn't miss this one. It looks pretty good with its brothers. I just need the Platinum 1/1 and the Online 5x7 /49 now.

I also added another card to the Carlson stash.

That's neat, I never thought to go after the unredeemed trade card for Trent Dilfer but thinking about it now that's definitely something I'd like to find. I picked up the Dilfer you have pictured 25 years ago and I remember it being somewhat tough at the time, though of course since I added it to the collection long ago it was out of mind. Didn't realize how tough they are to find now.

Today's mail:

021022-1.jpg
Happened to get in two 2020 Topps Independence Day parallels today, happy to get the Sean Murphy RC. The 2006 Ginter Mini Black Zito leaves me 3 short of that team set; already have 2007 through 2009 complete. The 2007 Topps Chrome X-Fractor Swisher gets me within 1 of completing that team set; once I find the Piazza I will have all A's for every 2007 Topps Chrome Refractor parallel except the Supers...Refractor, X-Fractor, Blue Refractor, White Refractor, and Red Refractor.

021022-2.jpg
Big pickup for the signed 1988 Topps set. Now 27 remaining. I already had the regular Ryan card from the set, however he's also in the Turn Back the Clock subset so I'm only 2/3 there on Ryans. This particular one also gets me to 6/7 on the Record Breakers subset...already had Vince Coleman, McGwire, Eddie Murray, Niekro brothers (signed by Joe), and Benny Santiago but still missing Mattingly.

I almost tagged you, and figured you'd probably already have the Dilfer, but since I wanted to try to finish the set, figured I better not draw added attention.

This is the "Choice Fusion Red and Yellow" variation out of 2021 Mosaic, 48/80. And they made 4 different Lamar Jackson/Trent Dilfer cards for 2021 Illusions, /25, /10, /5, and 1/1. With this 10/10 I have three of them, missing the /5 for the rainbow. I haven't seen one pop up yet.

021322-2.jpg
Various A's parallels. 1999 Revolution Shadow Series 18/99 Ben Grieve. The 2009 Topps Chrome Blue Refractor Andrew Bailey 140/199 completes the team set. Still need 23(!) for 2003 UD 40-Man Rainbow after getting Mark Johnson. Missing 4 for 2004 Leaf Certified Cuts Marble Blue/50, but one of those is Rickey Henderson so that'll be tough. And the Loaiza 71/75 gets me within 7 of completing 2007 Upper Deck Gold.

First a Jordan Weems 2021 Topps '86 Gold Auto 15/50. Then another one for my 1988 Topps signed set, Bob Knepper...one of those that doesn't seem like a super duper tough auto but for whatever reason it was hard to find one on this card. Still a long ways to go on 2006 Turkey Red Gold after picking up this Huston Street. The Bobby Crosby 045/100 gets me down to 2 left for the 2005 Leaf Century Silver Postmarks team set. And still 4 left for 2002 Gold Label Titanium/100.

Since I got back into collecting a few years back I’ve established three rules. 1) Try not to buy multiple cards of the same player…I got so burnt out on player collecting and rainbows that I’m now basically a type collector. 2) Never buy multiple autographs of the same player. 3) Never EVER buy multiple cards from the same set

Rules are made to be broken

Not much in the mail today. Checked Washburn off the Cardinals auto list.

I'm really a fan of 3x5's like this that were part of someone's TTM collection. I feel like they're a look into an era of collecting that has passed by and likely isn't coming back.

This is a duplicate (actually I think it's my 9th or 10th copy) but blue refractors are my favorite parallel from this year and I'll always add them cheap.

Really like that set. I need to look more often, the Millar you posted would be a nice add for me.
I have a similar thought for my Red Sox HOF collection, try not to duplicate sets, try to mix it up between rcs/auto/mat just so there's variety.
