Flair Masterpieces 1/1 Price Ideas.

90's Inserts are crazy popular and pricey of late.

Thoughts on value on these:

'97
John Smoltz
Randy Johnson
Marquis Grissom
Royce Clayton

'98
Albert Belle

two of the '97 Brett Butlers have popped up since they were released, and both went for over $250. The first one appeared not too soon after release, and I think I topped out at around $100 or so. I was the underbidder on the second - I never dreamed I'd be shot down on that one. Those were both straight auctions, with at least one actual player collector involved. If I remember correctly, both went to a collector in Asia somewhere. I think I've heard of other Masterpieces ending up in the same collection.

so to somewhat answer your question... if Brett Butler is worth $250, then Smoltz & Johnson would be what... double? More? Same with the '98 Belle. I'm sure there are several dedicated player collectors for each, so bidding could get intense, especially with the overseas factor. Grissom & Clayton are probably harder to guage - I've never heard of anyone collecting either player, so bidding may not be as fierce. Maybe a BIN/BO on those two.

I've heard the same with that overseas collection.
Japan I believe. There are AT LEAST 35+ Masterpieces that can be counted for that went to that collection.

SO tough to gauge cards like this, especially ANY 1/1s... it comes down to how many player collectors and set collectors are in the mix. I've been surprised both under and over the price I thought cards would sell for at auction. Private, off eBay, sales could warrent a "discount". Also, I know condition is almost a non factor with 1/1s but that would also have a little to do with price. This is all IMO.

I agree with you. Even if it is a 1/1, I believe condition does matter when it comes to value. Absolutely.
Especially for us player collectors.

You never know on the 1/1 stuff. But those early masterpieces are desirable. Condition is a minor consideration at best. If I had to make quick estimates:

Belle: $250-$350 - known hardcore collectors
Johnson: $200-$250
Smoltz: $175-$225 - his stuff doesn't move so well
Clayton: $75-$100
Grissom: $75-$100

All could easily be more if you luck into finding the right collector.


By the way, I got my 1997 for $100, but kind of a fluke (woman saw my website, sold it to me offline).

That is a shame. Must of been recently.

I'd pay the amounts you have listed for the '97s now and it would be a fair deal, the RJ could get a little more. But I'd think the '98 Belle would go for less than that actually - probably about half that amount only because the '98s seem to get less.

Yes, I'd say the lower the row #, the higher the value, but its not always a big difference.

I didn't pay any difference between the Rows for my Ripken Legacies.

The higher the row # the less 'flashy' the design; generally row 0 parallels are the most expensive.
