??? for patch collectors

How do you feel about patches of a player not game (played in) worn?

  • I like and would pay just as much as played in game worn.

As the new Sweet Spot jumbo patches have come out I really wanted an Eddie Mathews patch, as I am a big fan/collector of his. However after seeing several nice copies, I realized that the uni they used was a 1970's uni and that Mathews only wore the jersey/patch when he was a manager of the braves. For me personally, I would still like to pick up a copy, but it would have to be significantly less than what they are going for now. @ $200+ I'd say I'd give less than half of what they're going now. For me, on the Mathews card for example, I would prefer a patch used when the player was playing, thinking he hit a hr, or won a game w/ a hit in this jersey, not just that he, in his later years, sat on a bench and managed a game in. I know you'd never know that on most of the jerseys/patches, but IMO its better than knowing some old fart just threw on a jersey and managed a game (unless a hof manager) or shook hands w/ some old players friends on an old timers game and didn't do anything in it. (Using old fart jokingly) Same type of deal for event worn cards, photo shoot cards, old timers game cards etc. Some cards do elaborate on what they're from, but some that don't are obvious they aren't from the players era when they played. There is no right or wrong answer. Just thought I'd like to see some opinions/comments. Thanks

I see your point.
Of course it would be nice if it was actual game worn/used rather than managerial. Same as some Teddy Ballgame stuff.

But with a limited number, and it being from a highly collected set (Sweet Spot Jumbos), there is a good chance they won't go under $200. Just keep that in mind.

Good Luck with whatever you decide. They are great looking cards regardless.

I do not buy patches that are not game used. I really hate the manager jersey/patch cards. I have always been confussed at why baseball is the only sport that makes 60 year old fat guys where the same uni's as the players. Could you imagine if John Wooden had to wear 70's nut hugger shorts, or Andy Reid dressed in full O-line gear. Just makes no sense to me.

Makes total sense for them to wear suits for 3 hours in 100 degree weather too right? ::facepalm::

I buy everything I don't have. I see your point that maybe some patches are worth more than others.

That said, I personally think patches that were never game worn are just silly.

Kinda off topic here but managers are required to wear uniforms in baseball because they regularly go onto the feild of play wheile a game is in progress. At least that's what I remember Terry Francona said when this was brought up a few years agao at a press confrence.

To bring this back ON topic :D I don't mind the manager/event worn stuff, as long
as it is indicated as such on the card somewhere.

I def. would bid less for non-game used, but in the case of these Matthews Steve, I
think they would be going significantly higher if they were vintage game worn/used.
