Some minor mail...
I will be submitting this one as well as the one that is on it's way. Going for 9.5/10 autos. This is a very clean card.

This one's kind of cool:

Serial #3/5, kind of his jersey number right?

Pulled from a retail pack at a Walmart.

Strange times lately, not 'bad', but definitely odd.

So I've been searching for a decent 1997 Leaf Thomas Collection Bat for quite a number of years. There were some close calls and missed opportunities over the past half a decade, but when you're dealing with at least 80* copies - it's more a matter of 'eventually' rather than 'unlikely'.**

Many of you noted the recent release of several unnumbered versions that were sold at auction. These were, IMO, likely held back by Pinnacle as replacements for damaged copies. These replacement cards were a welcome relief of shade (albeit brief) from the blazing desert that's been the bane of this issue.

I've posted in the past that I see these types of cards as 'placeholders' in the sense that, from my collecting perspective, I've always strived for the cards that were pack-issued, even if the placeholder is authentic in every way save for the fact they were not busted. That they are also typically not found with some form of individual identification, like a serial number, also tends to temper my enthusiasm.

But I'm not opposed to their collectibility for several reasons - but I won't drag this out longer. <g>

So the strange times meant, for me, this guy:

How weird was it that in the span of 1-1/2 weeks I would encounter TWO of the bat cards?

I'm still not quite 'satisfied' - for reasons I'll explain down the road - but I am pleased that I finally finished this issue. <wink> {:-D

And before anyone asks - I'm going to hold onto the unnumbered version. The reason being: It's now part of my archives and helps to explain (will help to explain) how & why some of these unnumbered cards made it to the market. Trust me, as the years fly by, collectors come-n-go, and memories fade - having cold hard evidence is what will diminish speculation and disperse foggy recollections. <g>

Finally, I want to thank the Big Hurt Collecting Community for stepping back and allowing me to win the unnumbered version. Thank you. <nod of appreciation>

Lance ;-D

*I know that each version was numbered to 100, but one of the realities in dealing with cards is that statistically some portion, for innumerous reasons, will unlikely survive the passage of time. I account for this by what I perceive as a reduction by attrition via freakish oops, awws and happenstance.

**By unlikely I mean obtaining something like the 1997 Flair Showcase Legacy Masterpieces - of which there are three unique 1/1s being held in a private collection and therefore highly unlikely ever to be seen in the foreseeable future.

Lance,

Your post is like a Playboy magazine, I'm only in it for the pictures! Great card, great gesture by the the other Thomas collectors and you make some really great points.

Great now another one I have to find...should have just checked with Lance or Cobra to see how much those are going for if and when you can find one....Was this also a mail in redemption but just listed as a Gold Medallion? If so wouldn't those redemptions be the hardest to find?

Yes mail in GM...I've never seen one on eBay...at least not in the last 3 or 4 years. One of the few "wood" cards that aren't 1 of 1 that I need.
